location: garden > forest | tags: pineshadow; weakpaw
- The leader's head turned sharply at the sound of someone addressing her, but the fierce look in her eyes waned some when she saw it was only her former apprentice, Pineshadow. "This is good news to hear." she mewed, nodding her head to the tom in greeting. It had been strange receiving the tabby as her apprentice all those moons ago, when she had only been a warrior for less than an entire sun-cycle. She suspected their leader at the time, Harestar, knew he wanted her to be deputy someday, and having an apprentice was a requirement. At first she'd managed the mentorship as just that: another stepping-stone in her conquest to lead BrumeClan, but after bonding with Pineshadow over the course of their training, Valerianstar had learned to truly appreciate the journey of shaping the Clan's youth into fine-tuned warriors.
She would've liked to strike up some conversation with Pineshadow, but Weakpaw had finally approached her. "I would not expect any less," the bicolored she-cat replied to her charge. Struck by the fact that both of the cats with her either were or had been under her teaching, she let her gaze flicker between them, noting their differences. Valerianstar sniffed and flicked her tail, as if gathering herself once more. These days she tended to wear a constant scowl, her brow furrowed by worry and temper. She was a constant storm, her eyes flashing like lightning ith every thought and a growl of thunder rumbling in her chest each time her patience was tested; depending on your love of such weather, she was a force of beauty or an omen of fury.
"Pineshadow, you head back to camp. Round up some cats and lead a patrol along the border at the mountain base. With leaf-fall here, prey will be heading downhill to escape the worst of the cold and we may as well take advantage of it. And you-" she broke off, flicking her tail at Weakpaw, "Can come with me to the lake." She shot Pineshadow a look that hopefully came across as We can chat later as she turned and pushed through the undergrowth. The lake lay in wait on the other side of the forest, cold and deep and black. The elders liked to say that giant fish lived beneath the depths, ready to drag a full-grown warrior beneath the depths. They said that because StarClan's light could not penetrate the waters, the cats transformed into great whiskered beasts, prowling around for victims.
Still, that place was BrumeClan territory, and Valerianstar hadn't been in some time, and Weakpaw, too. There were dangers that far deep into the forest, and most mentors refused to take their apprentices too far in until they were at least eight moons. If anything, something might stray across her path and make her day a little bit more interesting. As her pelt was swallowed into the trees, she glanced back over her shoulder at her apprentice. "You were late to wake this morning. I don't recall working you that hard yesterday; I hope you weren't sneaking out."

𝖶𝖠𝖱𝖱𝖨𝖮𝖱. a ginger tabby tom with a white underbelly and green eyes
location: forest | tags: wolfscratch
- When nothing emerged from the undergrowth, Hornetswam narrowed his eyes and teased the air with his nose. Cat scent trickled in, carrying the scent of a BrumeClan tom towards him. The warrior scowled and crept towards the sound of the cat traipsing through the ferns before emerging from the undergrowth to bar their path. Wolfscratch.
Hornetswarm flattened his ears. "Keep up that racket and you'll scare off all the prey from here to the lake," he muttered, his green eyes narrowing at his clanmate. He was rather surprised to be crossing paths with the tom, as the two of them seemed to have an innate urge to avoid other cats. Perhaps the forest wasn't big enough to hide such recluses as them, and in that case, Wolfscratch ought to find some other place to pollute with his noise.
He wrinkled his snout as if he'd caught a whiff of crowfood and turned, not entirely sure he felt like bickering today. It was always the same with his Clanmates, and eventually he'd have to deal with his sister for hurting her poor warriors' feelings. Hornetswarm flexed his claws in the damp earth beneath him, itching to rake them across her smug, entitled face.

𝖠𝖯𝖯𝖱𝖤𝖭𝖳𝖨𝖢𝖤. a tall, lanky lilac-point siamese molly with blue eyes
location: grassland | tags: reedwhistle
Covered in dust, Lavenderpaw rolled to her paws with her jaws clamped on a gopher. She'd managed to catch it just before it reached its burrow, but it had required a bit of a sloppy leap across the stretch of dirt pockmarked by holes. The lanky siamese had never been a great hunter, even now when she was only a few moons away from becoming a warrior. Hunting out in the grasslands was definitely not her thing, as she was far too tall to be able to chase rabbits down into their burrows and had to rely on her speed to carry her to them before they could get away.
Luckily, though, training with Pantherhowl had made her much quicker and observant, and Lavenderpaw was starting to feel like she might actually be shaping up into a fine hunter now. Holding the gopher high, she trotted back to her mentor, Reedwhistle. "How was that?" she huffed breathlessly. "I know my jump was sloppy. and I led with left foot instead of my right, so that probably threw of the timing...but other than that...." She trailed off, knowing her mentor wouldn't hold back any criticisms.
