Just wanted to specifically reply to this, as we consider every application that comes in when we open them, and as I said we never decide not to hire someone just because we already have enough people. I'd say that, due to viewing the applications, it's just a fact that we do have a much better idea of how many people are qualified and willing than the average user.

i understand there's an age limit on moderator positions and that users aren't very nice to mods in admittedly a majority of the cases, however it just didn't seem like there was a way for a general helper to climb the ranks after they already earned their current position besides being offered another position. i assumed that a general helper could only earn a promotion through activity if they were interested, and because there seemed to be a halt in those members being promoted, but also hiring any staff in general. i've noticed there's about a year between openings, and a lot of the time they're for one position which doesn't seem like enough, honestly.
so essentially taking into account i thought:
1) general helpers were only offered positions when deemed to fit the hiring criteria
2) general helpers would have some reason not to be able to apply for new positions the way that other CS users can
that there was just no longer interest into giving these users promotions since they were at a halt from what i seen. but i'm glad you corrected me about that!

Simon and I both started as GH but we applied to be global mods just like everyone else; we were not offered the position without voluntarily applying. While being a GH can be a great indicator of that person's dedication and ability to work on a team, moderation is a completely different task and may not be why someone applied to be a GH. Many GH are content with their role, and I do not feel that our mod team has an influx of work that needs to be moved to another team.
GH are absolutely a vital part of our team and I am immensely thankful for all of the work they do for CS. ♥

i want to thank cs mods for being so active on this thread, it's so appreciated by the community.
as someone who's been on cs since 2011, i relate with a lot of the posts already made; i grew up on this site, and it's actually insane for how long i've been using it for. my parents literally point at my laptop to ask why i still use it, even if i go on a hiatus or leave for several months at a time; they remember cs because it's literally the reason i began to write as i grew up, and allowed me to make so many wonderful friends with people i probably never would have met otherwise.
the site is almost the exact same, format wise, since i joined. there's been so many tiny changes, and there was the huge site overhaul that took place, but aside from that, there's nothing else that comes to mind. i don't say this to try and discredit the work the admins and moderators do, because you keep the site running, fix bugs, and work behind the scenes; i'll forever be grateful for that. but virtually, the site has had the same theme and formats since i joined. i've had other sites i've used for less time have entire site overhauls, even with more users than CS, and an entirely non-existent admin base (with little to no presence on the site). it's almost insane to me that sites that haven't been around that long, or have even more users, can accomplish this and yet cs can't.
i love cs, i truly do, but over the years i've felt actual shame coming onto the site. it's odd supporting a site when it almost feels like it doesn't support its community.
mods, again, thank you for standing with us and saying you hear us. i know you alone cannot fix the problem, but acknowledging it is an amazing, wonderful, and heartwarming first step. i applaud you of your work, for sticking with CS, and for helping us with the cause listed here. it means so much to me, and obviously all the other users involved in this discussion.
it's weird, when i was younger i used to genuinely dream of being a cs moderator; i would literally check every single mod position opening to check the age limit and grumble when i realized i was years too early. now that i could, in a theory, apply to these positions, (god knows i have way too many board warnings for a role) it seems like now it'd be trying to put a bandaid over an extremely large wound. like, one that needs stitches and not just a bandaid.
that's my two cents, and some words from someone who's been with the site for an actual 9 years. how fast time passes is insane.

CS really holds a special place in my heart, I’ve been here for 6 years and this game was a big part of my childhood.
This is just a guess, but I think the game got a lot bigger and is staying relevant for a lot longer than Tess and nick imagined back in 2008. It’s probably time so promote senior staff members and hire new coders to help the site grow. I think everything I would’ve said has already been said, so I’ll just leave my support here.

Forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=4384947 We are working to use the announcements board more and there may be other communication avenues coming as well.
are there going to be any changes to the announcement boards to make it more visible or anything? otherwise i don't see why the new update couldn't just be posted on the Site News section on the front page to give updates more attention, which could also hopefully start to mend the communication between users and staff.

after rarely grabbing hold of a laptop to reply to this thread, i'm pleased to say i finally have. and i am further pleased to say that the action being taken on this thread is overwhelming.
when my friends and i were discussing cs we were all so upset and thought we were possibly the only ones feeling the same way, however, looking at the results of the poll and of the thread it just shows we aren't.
thank you, admins and mods, for taking the time out of your day to reply. nick, i'm sorry you received such hateful feedback on your comments. we love and appreciate what you do for this site, without you the site would not be where it is at today.
lacuna, thank you for being so active here. you explained everything so thorough and well and definitely opened up a few pairs of eyes.
burrito and seasonal, you're a blessing. your message is so sweet, and yes. a special shout out and thank you to general helpers. they deserve more credit than they receive.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
the overall gist is that we understand you look through the applications very very thoroughly. it just feels like such a shame as i know that the past couple years when applications have opened up, i've been too shy to apply. i've had the mindset "i won't get it" so i don't apply. and yes, that is majorly my fault lol. but i feel as though many other users feel the same.
it would be good, in my opinion, if you had staff applications open all the time. and then when it comes to needing more staff, you can look over applications that have been made. sort of like a draft form of the site; so that users can edit it or delete their application whenever needed (but it updates you when that has happened). that way, you always have applications coming in, and you hire when it is NEEDED.
or offering trial runs to be mods for example ? give someone a load of scenarios, allow them to be a mod for a few weeks, perhaps a new title and username colour for "mod in training" or something like that. that way you aren't just hiring random people?
maybe my idea is totally whack, i'm tired and running off of caffeine so far so my apologies.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
also feel as though people are STILL missing the point of the post entirely. we do not want to sell !!! we just think it should be a last resort. and why do people keep thinking the site would be sold to some random person lol. it could be passed on to well trusted global mods or admin assistants. friends. well trusted people. just because the term 'sold' is being used doesn't automatically mean "CAPITALISM ! MONEY ! INCOME !". we just want it to be in the hands of someone who loves the site as much as us and is willing for it. and it is clear you haven't read the post in its full entirety, just read the title and bam. opinion formed. maybe the title is misleading, but it is something that has helped grabbed the mods attention. that's business baby,
the fact that since this thread has been made, a couple updates have happened which is still amazing. it would just be great help if it was also updated on the front page, or a small pop up news box when you first log in, or maybe a bi-weekly summary of updates that have occurred. we want more communication.
i feel so so sorry for bombarding tess and nick with this thread, it must be disheartening to have worked so hard for a site and see its members bashing it (although that word may be too strong to use...). but please, it is better late than never.

CS has been a part of my life since 2009 and really, it's not changed much. Several lineart swaps, staff have come and gone, themes were added and we had the addition of summer events. I believe CS needs some series work doing to give it new life and stop the spiral down into nothing that it's currently in
Unless I post somewhere, I'm not selling/trading closed species critters.

Nice to see this subject being brought up and actually discussed. Though I do wonder why Cinnamon Sticks posting privileges were removed and require verification before being posted?
If you saw the topic disappear for a second that was because I edited the first post and managed to cause a disturbance in the force! It wasn't anything to do with the OP.

So.. not only are you from Krypton, but you're a jedi too? That's awesome :D
the feedback and responses to this have been incredibly encouraging! The actions taken by nick as well are great steps in the right direction, I'm very excited to see what other interesting things come out of this and I'm so glad me and my friends had the courage to boldly bring this up XD we were worried we'd get into trouble or be banned, I'm glad it's had a positive effect so far :')
