That's actually an important question and whilst researching and finding out that same littler pets changed to higher rarities months apart, I always asked myself how I would have compensated that rarity difference back then and how I would do it now. Obviously, as time goes by, rarity gaps start to stretch out, so if one litter mate switched to rare a month before, it might have gone up to very rare even a couple months before the others as well. That's a pattern I've seen quite frequently.

As for your question, there's no one that could definitely say what "a month's difference in rarity" equals in terms of pets, so I'd like to sort of haggle with myself first and after that I'll discuss my thoughts with my trading partner. If pets have very similar changing dates and are of old dates, I'd probably look for an add-on consisting of a couple 09 rares. If I wanted to "trade up" to a pet that has changed to VR about a year or two before, then I'd add a pet of considerably higher value (probably a pet that sits below the one I am offering).
I think I wrote a more specific answer about a similar approach to auctions on some other thread - let me see if I can find it. Edit: here you go: link

There's no real guide and very little trading experience overall to help you with, as this is a completely new approach that not many will accept or be willing to negotiate on, although I can really see that it could resolve alot of C$ problems.

Your detailed response is a very very helpful way of thinking about trades and auctions, so I really appreciate it! High value trades will probably continue to be a point of anxiety for me, but it's nice to know that I can at least use a reasonable justification for them. Looks like it'll just take a good amount of researching pets and trades while we all learn!

Ah you're very welcome! Let us know if you need more input and feel free to share your thoughts with us, there'll surely be someone around to discuss any pet values with you c:
Rarity has been neglected for a very long time and I am sure that many people don't realize the initial worth that their pet represents and what it could trade for, if they just stopped following public demand and started to make some own decisions.

Always remember: It is THEIR choice to as for the certain amount of sorbs for a particular popular pet, so it might as well be YOUR choice to value another pet higher than it's market value and as long as you have good reasoning that helps you negotiate with your trading partner, no harm will be done. We should all start to follow our personal preferences more <3

I think the old list made us perceive gaps between tiers as being far bigger than they really are. I still have that problem when looking at this list; hopefully it will ease away with time. Personally I think that a few older VRs is enough to fill a gap from one line to another, but it really depends on your trading partner.

I also have a lot of anxiety over sending higher value trades. I want to break away from the old list values but I also don't want someone to think that I am trying to take advantage of them. It's a difficult rope to balance on. I always try to cite my information and my reasoning for it. For example, I would send a trade and say something like, "Feel free to edit this trade. I feel that it is fair because according to this rarity guide that uses rarity changes to track a pet's value over time, these pets changed rarity around the same time and therefore are likely to be very close in value to each other."

The problem is that current market values are so far removed from what would be reasonable from a rarity standpoint that it would be impossible to do that at all with many pets. imagine trying to offer a september list for a raven dog or swap an arabian horse for a punk dog. that's the kind of antics that'll get you called a scammer unfortunately. what a madhouse this site has become haha. the list definitely didn't do us any favours in the long run.

I tend to think about things using a modified three month rule, if that makes sense. I don't really do high value trading, just kinda watch from the sidelines, but in an ideal world that's what I'd like to be able to suggest for people to use. excluding the first couple of years when the site's population was still low, if pets went to VR within three months of each other I'd loosely say it's a decent swap from a rarity perspective. That really does depend on the pet, though, since despite being rarity biased I still really think demand definitely needs to be considered. Just less than it currently is, I think.

this is not going to make sense and I apologise in advance. Just wanted to blab some sort of opinion before I forget to reply in the morning

This is the way I also look at it. Most of the gaps between VR pets are only one month so I would personally be happy to do 1:1 swaps following a three month rule. For the OMGSR pets it is a little bit more difficult, but I think looking at the pets complete history is a good way of getting some idea of the gaps. Asvoria and I are currently working on a spreadsheet that includes all the information on this thread (and more) which was originally just for me to have an easy reference of data so I could make educated predictions on some rarities we were missing - but it's turning into a great visual tool to see differences between pets and the "pattern" of rarity changes they seem to follow. I will be releasing this for everyone to see once it's a little more finished.

I also take the same approach as Seasonal with citing my reasoning behind a trade - for the most part it has worked and I've been really happy to learn a lot of my trading partners also follow this guide rather than the old list. But I have it specified in my trade rules that this is the guide I use, and I guess being the author of this thread also helps to attract other players who use it lol. I don't do many large high value trades because I simply don't have the fodder (and I'm too anxious to trade off store pets heh), but any trades I do that include high value pets, I always say I'm fully expecting to edit back and forth as many times as necessary so both people can get a clear idea of each other's personal value.
