Hmmm... I don’t see why not. It seems they could’ve died, or since it’s in a video game style, passed a level. Possibly they had someone else in their ‘party’ and they were accidentally left behind in that smog. The fog could have messed with the others mind,,, or idk they forgot the other somehow. But when they go to move on, they get a nagging sense that somethings wrong, there’s something else they’re missing. So when offered to go back over the chance of moving forwards, they do so at the chance of finding what’s wrong, or what/who they may have forgotten.

Hehe, just a lil theory.

Wow! You are actually very close. Yes, they do die, but the other gets stuck above since they've entered a special realm and other one hasn't. So they go through this realm to a challenger to get back to the normal realm, but they dont exactly win. They nearly lose, and they only win because somehow the other has managed to get in the realm the main one is in for a short while.

But now, now it's the other way around. Sacrifices,,

Either that or they're leaving the realm bc they've failed, leaving everything behind to go through that door. I still have to decide on an ending.

Edit: Also im being vague bc im not gonna spoil a bunch of stuff

I love that story so much! It’s very sad, of course, but it’s in depth and I’m in love with it. Ahhhh sacrifices :<
