[ main thread ]

As you make your way through the small town, a subtle, metallic jingling grabs your attention from the far corner. Allured, you draw closer, coming to an opening with a tidy set up in the middle, strangely away from the main crowds. Several little trinkets ranging from gems, to sculptures and to jewelry were displayed on an elegant rug.

A kalon sits at the base, decorated from head to toe in trinkets of the same fashion. Nothing seems to go together, with randomly placed pendants and objects, though it interests you nonetheless.

Image
"Well hello, curious traveler," the kalon speaks up, forest green eyes meeting yours intrinsically.
She had a certain aura to her, but you couldn't quite figure it out... Mysterious, indeed, and
nonetheless intriguing.

"Come to see my collection?" She gestured her paw over her intricate collection of items, and
you swore you saw them gleam as she did so. You surveyed each one, almost overwhelmed with
the sheer amount and variety. Every object unique and distinct from the other.

"Name's Devin, spent my whole life collecting these... This here was my first one. Given to me by
my grandmother; she used to create her own jewelry," Devin took ahold of the brilliant emerald
pendant displayed in the middle of the rug, holding it up to the sun. Reflections of light danced
within the stone. Mystic, almost hypnotic.

    x
"Each one means something different, a memory in my life," she continued, recalling memories as she too surveyed her special collection. "Could write a novel about each one, I could."

"Say, do you have any special things? Perhaps a piece of jewelry, family pendant, or a childhood toy? Do tell, I'm always ears for a good story."

“I’d suppose it would be this locket I have. It’s a family heirloom, passed on for generation after generation” Felipe pointed to it, as he held it up to the light. “According to my folks it’s meant to grant the user power, but I haven’t experienced that myself personally. Still, I’ve heard stories about this locket from the past. I can’t really guarantee if it’s true, but it’s worth it to tell it anyways.

In generations back where there was more magic in the world, it was sort of created as a way to communicate to spirits in a safe manner for those that couldn’t do that. In addition, it was also created to ward off beasts from the user. My family apparently comes from a long line of mages, but since magic has been dying out for centuries now they’ve started to rely on it a lot apparently.

My mom gave this locket to me when my dad caught me levitating chips while I was playing a video game, which was kinda weird because I had thought that being able to lift things with your mind was normal. Still, I’ve worn it since because it does bring an odd sense of comfort, at least for me.

I’m not quite sure if those stories are true, perhaps they are, but I haven’t been able to prove it yet. Still, if they were I’ve already been able to see ghosts before I got it, so that does make one of its rumored abilities redundant for me. Even though it might not be true, it is a cherished trinket, you know? I really do like it a lot, since it seems really interesting to me personally.

However, the one thing strange about it is that it’s seemingly jammed to the point where I can’t open it up on the insides, even when I’ve asked the strongest kalons I know, they couldn’t open it. If anything, I’d really like to know what’s inside. Believe me, I’ve tried, and it seems pretty indestructible. Honestly, it’s a strange locket, but it’s my strange locket.”

Felipe fiddled around with the locket around his neck, realizing he has gone on a tangent about it. Turning to Devin, he decides it’s best to end off the story, since he was getting off track of what he was supposed be doing in the first place. Brushing his hair to the side to cool off a little, he returns to the subject.

“Anyways, there’s a lot of history to this locket, truthful or not since I’m not really sure so myself. Whatever it is truthfully, I will find out eventually. But, for now, it’s just something handed down to myself.”

dahlia . Image . 258 words
dahlia frowned and looked around her home for something that fit the description. "well, it's not exactly an object, but i do have this" she bent down and lifted up a really quite small chicken that was on fire?! "this is phoenix, bought him in a town marketplace somewhere near here to keep me company - oh please don't touch him that fire will burn you" she showed the burn scars on her arms, presumably from her first couple of weeks with the chicken, although she was holding him now without any issues, perhaps it was some kind of magic.

"it can get really lonely out here in the woods, i needed a friend and this little guy really just is the perfect company yknow? although i gotta be careful taking him outside with the whole fire thing" dahlia looked off into the distance for a moment, recalling the time phoenix may have set something outside on fire. her eyes snapped back up "c'mon let me show you his room" dahlia walked further inside of her rather cluttered home, it was messy but it had a nice homey vibe to it.

she opened the door - which had a cat door on it with the actual door insert taken out, so it was more of an arch really - to 'phoenix's room' and it wasn't anything spectacular, just a room for a chicken. but with the expression on dahlia's face when she put her chicken on the ground, it was really quite noticeable how much that little guy means to her.

"Something that I find special to me, you ask? Honestly, that's a very hard question." Astaroth mumbled to the lady in front of him. He wasn't at all used to being asked questions, he was usually left alone in his pit in the underworld. He should have never come here, bad idea on his end. "I guess I could use a being, right?" Astaroth asked, realizing that a being wasn't an object, and changing his view on the whole question for the tenth time over. "Honestly, I don't own many things, but if I have to choose one particular special thing it would have to be this ring that my boyfriend and I have." Roth held his hand out, the ring on his ring finger shiny and bright as if it almost didn't belong on such a worn down person. "It's the only thing on this planet that I actively take care of other than my boyfriend because he's stupid. I love this ring, it means everything to me. I don't think I would truly be 'Astaroth' without this ring on." He continued, now rambling on about how stupid his boyfriend was because that was his favorite thing to talk about. He eventually snapped out of his 'let me bash my stupid boyfriend' thought process and back into 'look at my awesome ring' thought process. "Back to the ring, it's made out of obsidian, which is epic by the way, and my favorite sediment because it's dark like my heart, of which has absolutely no love at all in it.. I think..." Astaroth didn't stop speaking for nearly an hour about his ring, and he was sure that this woman now regretted her question.

ANA  POLYTHYMNIA  PARNEL
76heartana603 words

Frowning, Ana regraded Devin cautiously, her eyes narrowed and thoughtful as they squinted in the frown. She didn't much like people who talked, or who gave the impression of being chatty, but she did like stories. She really liked stories. She loved stories more than anything. At the very heart of her soul, at the very center of her depths, she was a storyteller, a writer, a wordsmith, and her heart, her very being, wouldn't allow her to ignore the stories of another, or neglect to share her own if given the chance. Her stories were the way she breathed, the way she spread her wings to fly, and hearing the stories of others helped her wings to flutter. Perhaps, if she gave this odd woman the answer, she would get to hear more. If she could write a novel for all her stories of each memory and each thing, then she wanted to hear them all, directly from the source.

Sighing, she gave a small nod, and turned her gaze toward the earth beneath them. "It's a many special things, to me at least. I lost them once, and it broke my heart. I didn't think I could continue, but I did, even though I lost such a huge part of who I was that night, even though I lost so many pieces of me." She bristled at the memory, but allowed a moment for her fur to smooth before she continued, hesitantly looking up to the woman with the strange and intriguing collection, a collection she so wanted to hear the story behind.

This felt weird, she wasn't used to sharing. She wasn't used to talking, or at least not used to talk with someone who could see, and someone who wasn't well, a dog.

"I suppose my quill would start what it is, or my quill and inkwell anyway. I could write without them, and my stories are what are most precious to me, and the parchments I write them all to save them on. I've never known anything but telling stories, they're everything to me. Writing has just always been what I did and what I do and I would not be me without my stories. They're my special things." Her paws shifted, and she settled, relaxing a fraction. "There was a masquerade one night, in the palace where I live and work helping out the blind maester. I never intended to go; I most dislike those events. I stayed to write instead, but I spilled ink all over everything I had written. I lost everything, I lost it all. I lost my precious things, but I recovered, and now I have more. I have new stories, new tales and tapestries I've woven that are just as special." She still missed her old works, she always would, but she had come to terms, and the part of her was still there, just a bit mirky with ink and hard to wade into to retrieve. She wasn't ready to delve into them yet, but she would be someday.

"It probably isn't the answer you were looking for, but I don't have much. It's just me and my stories to call mine. I hope that's enjoyable, at least." Ana looked downs bit shameful, but considering, and then she lifted her head up again and met Devin's eyes, trying not to seem awkward or mildly scared. "If you wouldn't mind, and if it wouldn't be a bother, could I hear your stories? Would you tell me the tales behind all you have? I'd be happy to share more of mine in return."

Claude scratched behind her ear. "Well, I suppose there is one thing. It's a long story, however." She waited a second, receiving no answer. Assuming the lack of response meant to tell the long story, she continued, "I had a really hard time with math in school. I really couldn't add, subtract, multiply, divide, don't even get me started on algebra. However, there was a girl in my college freshman math class I fancied." Claude chuckled to herself here. "This girl was a business major, and able to do calculations very quickly in her head. I was in awe, and, to tell you the truth, slightly envious. I could barely add seven and five without using my paws, let alone some of the things she did." This was a good memory, rosy and warm. Claude wanted to hold onto it, never let go of the feeling of first love and adolescence it brought to her. Those were good times. She felt good then.

Realizing her thinking had made her trail off without even getting to her "trinket," she shook her head, her mint hair flipping back and forth. "Anyhow, I approached her after class one day. I could hardly get the words out, I was so gosh dang nervous. I had never asked a girl out before! I did it, though. I asked her to grab lunch with me before class the next day." Claude chuckled a bit before saying the next bit.

"During lunch the next day, I asked her how she had learned to do math that fast. She pulled a tiny little calculator out of her pocket, and told me she had always been fascinated with numbers and their relationships to each other. Whenever she saw two numbers she would use that calculator to add them, or multiply them, or what have you. Over the years she had just memorized a lot of things. I thought it was kind of weird, but in a cute way. She actually gave me that calculator because I was so interested in her little quirk. She said she had another one to quell my worries about her needing it, but I've always suspected that she went and bought a new one later that day." Claude's tail flicked back and forth. "I carried that calculator around with me for years. I still have it, but after college we decided that with our different life paths, we should just be friends. We're still very close to this day!"

Ursula took Devin’s hands delicately in her own, admiring the jewelry. Her eyes twinkled as she carefully observed the pendant. She could tell she cared deeply for the items she collected, each and every one carried its own value in Devin’s heart.
“Since you ask,” Ursula began, “I do have something close to me.”
She dug around in the pocket of her suit coat and pulled out a blue book. She held it out in her hands for Devin to touch. The book was a simple earthy hued cover, warming to the eyes, comforting. After all these years it was soft to the touch and the edges had a similar look to some beloved teddy bear. Ursula was excited to show off her grimoire as if it were her own child. She flipped open the pages, Inside the pages looked as if they had bathed in golden rays. Each page detailed spells and notes from her mentors.
She flipped through the pages, telling Devin in great detail of all her spells and adventures to obtain each spell. Ursula pointed to the spell Ignis.
“This was one of my first spells, and it was incredibly hard to master..” she sighed, moving her hair out of her eyes to reveal a burn scar. She could see the shock on Devin’s face, she took this as an opportunity to proceed with her story.
“I suppose I forgot to explain where I obtained my grimoire. It wasn’t exactly easy to collect this book...there are a lot of crooks in the village of Oresfall.” Ursula frowned and folded her arms.
“I had to watch carefully sneaking around every corner to get to a man located behind the village’s tavern,” She looked Devin in her emerald eyes and smiled. “I’m not losing you, am I?” she teased letting out a soft chuckle before getting back to her story.
“There was an old mage sitting behind the tavern and I offered 10 silver for the old tome he had beside him. He figured I offered a good price and accepted my offer!” The young woman smiled and flipped to a certain page. The page was yellowed and well worn, clearly, the handwriting was different from her own.
“The old fart gave me this spell with the book, he taught me well too!”
Ursula took Devin’s hand in her own once more.
“Don’t pull away, ok? I promise I won’t hurt you.” She said calmly.
Light began to pulse from her fingertips. A strange, bright light. The two watched it flicker, changing colors from amber, to ruby, then back to gold.
“This spell is called Velo.” the light faded and Ursula closed her Grimoire. She smiled once more before looking up to the sky, checking what time of day it was.
“Oh my, it appears I must have overstayed my welcome! I’m sorry! Thank you for listening to me love! I must go meet up with Erin now, Ciao!” she blew a kiss towards Devin before trotting back into the rushing crowd.
