Competition: Hex was a bit of a premature foal, she was tiny when she came into the world and for fears of her health, she was kept locked up inside longer then most of the other rescued foals. She had struggled to suckle and her mother ended up abandoning her so she was hand fed for a time until she was weaned.
Hex was shy and spent most of her time laying in the stall bored and alone until a stable hand had come by her stall and had seen how down in the dumps she had been and how she wasn't socialising much due to having been kept inside so long.
The stable hand brought a duckling with them when they visited her, in an effort to see how the foal would deal with an animal companion until she could be rehome and introduced to some foals. Hex had initially been frightened by the strange sounding animal, but after giving it a sniff and getting used to it, she became quite attached to the duckling, and it snuggled up against her or clambored up onto her back while she layed down in the straw and it rubbed its beak under her chin for attention. She had gotten much better and was finally happy, but a few days later when the event was in full swing and people were coming in and out do the stable all day, a stray cat had found its way into the stable while the stable hand went to fetch the foal some oats, and the duckling ended up being caught by the cat to hexs horror. She had shrieked and whinnyed and the stable hand had chased off the cat, but it had been too late and her duckling was gone, she had lost the only friend she had so far, and she was devastated. It took about an hour of petting and comfort for her to even stop shaking and standing completely still in her stall as she stared at where the duckling had been, a few last tiny yellow feathers sitting on the straw. She stopped eating after that, and felt like her entire life was shattered.
The day came and she was put into the arena to be purchased it had been quite a stressful ordeal for the shy foal and she was feeling down in the dumps again after being led off to a large silver trailer by her new owner, yet she practically flew into the air with a well placed buck and kick as she came face to face with a group of 5 little ducklings, who were quacking and rambling about on the floor of the trailer. Turned out the stable hand had approached the owner after the bidding was done, and together they pitched in some money and visited a local pet store, and rescued some ducklings to help her heal and replace the little friend she had lost.
She took great care to be gentle and laid down in the hay with them and let them clambor all over her and pull her mane and make an awful racket, yet hex felt so happy she didn't care. She still missed her first friend, but she felt determined to love these ducklings as she had her first, and she no longer felt lonely. They kept her company throughout the entire drive to her new home, and got to stay with her in her stall. She grew quick, as did the ducklings, and when it came to going out to the paddock they were there to encourage her and keep her comonay, and even the other foals seemed to take an interest in them although they were larger now and quite noisy, and scared the other foals. She still makes time to play with the ducks that helped her through her dark time, and considers them her closest friends.
