So I dunno how to put this post without risking coming across like I'm trying to be holier-than-thou 'cause that's not my intention. You'd be perfectly in your right to accept an overpay offer and I ain't gonna throw shade for it, haha.
    But yeah, actually I would.

My usual reaction to being offered overpay is to edit the trade and send it back asking if the other person is sure about their offer and informing them that they're overpaying.
Not everyone's overpay is intentional, and sometimes people send overpay offers because they've given up on having fair offers accepted in the first place.
I'd rather not accept overpay from someone who doesn't know what they're doing, and if they do know what they're doing I still feel a lot more comfortable at last offering them the option to work out a more fair offer first.

Like, I get where you're coming from with that question, but the implication that nobody out there would be willing to -or prefer to- work out a fairer offer at the loss of their own profit from it isn't really true - and I don't think it's a rare attitude either, not from my experiences at least.
Maybe it's just not the same league as list trading, but I tend to send out mild overpay for hoard pets a lot, and it's actually a common occurrence that people edit them to be fairer to me.

i'm not saying there aren't people who wouldn't edit the trade and make it fairer, i've done it too in some cases but i feel like the majority would not, especially if you know that you need that trading fodder if you want to eventually obtain older (store) pets...

it's another thing if i suspect the person doesn't understand the value of their pets of course, i was more talking about people who know but are still willing to throw out offers like that. probably should have added that ^^"

and even if i get such an offer, i can chose not to make it public and inflate demand any more than necessary i guess.

Yeah I wasn't saying that nobody would take the offer, or that people who wouldn't are the majority, I just wanted to bring up that I don't think it's such an unlikely case that it wouldn't be worth considering in the debate^^ Because there is a crowd out there who is willing to trade high-demand pets for prices that aren't ridiculously inflated, and I always feel like that's something worth being brought up because it's so common to see people feeling down because they think they won't ever be able to get x pet unless they agree to pay more than they'd be happy with.

It takes longer, but it can be worth it to try and find that one person who's happy to tier swap. There are people out there who trade longtails for rares. There are people with rare fodder who like and want rats.
Maybe you won't find someone who takes a dark leopard for a BA, but you can find people who don't ask for a non.
A lot of times overpay stems from simply wanting to get a pet as quickly as possible and ensuring that the other person will take the trade, but it's not the only way^^

So... If that person still insisted on giving me a Sunjewel after I've asked them twice if they're super sure about it and if there's nothing else they'd want to at least add to my side, then sure. I'll take it, be happy, and thank the person from the bottom of my heart.
Though... At that point, extreme overpay like that would probably also be where I stop counting it as a genuine offer and start thinking of it as a partial gift, haha.

i totally see your point, a lot of the time it's just people not wanting to invest the time and effort to look for the right trading partners.

on the topic of rereleasing store pets (not that it ever happens, just wanted to throw this in here)
another pet adopting site (eldermore) did something like dec 18 boxes but for their currency baubles (C$ equivalent) to release older bazaar pets (like store pets here) back in the game.

i don't remember how that went, but they only did it once...
i know a lot of people spent a lot of money to buy those "boxes" to try and get the older pets though as they weren't limited.

I remember that as well. I believe they stopped it as it was considered gambling. People where paying real money for the hopes of getting a pet worth more then they were paying. Some people lucked out and some over payed for recent bazaar pets. It was 400 baubles and you got 2 random pets. Being it costs $20 for 400 baubles you can see it costs quite a bit. I got several pets that was only 6 months old. Here's an article about it. https://www.eldemore.com/viewtopic.php? ... om#p305374
So I for one am glad they will not be offering something like this.
also have and Eldemore account with the same user name. As well as a FR account with the same name.

Curious if anyone who's followed the wildly fluctuating demands of pets has any insight into whether there have been cases of very high demand pets crashing again in terms of perceived value?

For context, I was around back when the May lion had a huge peak and crash. However, I recall that was because people weren't as attracted to the grown lion art than to the growing art, and also because this was one of the first times a rare pet was randomly plopped into an otherwise normal litter, so people went crazy and demand plummeted after a month.

It's been a while since I've been actively trading, and when I started up again this month I was shocked to see just how different values of certain pets have become due to demand and have been reading this thread with a lot of curiosity. I'm curious to hear opinions or observations from someone more experienced than I am, on whether the importance of demand is a swelling wave and we're still on the up in almost all cases, or whether some pets have had boom/bust cycles before. :3

I'm not 100% sure this is high-stakes enough to fit the kind of value crash you're thinking of, but I remember when this 2016 litter was released and folks went nuts over the PPS lion cub.

before it got its rarity, people were overpaying out the wazoo for it. I was one of the lucky ones who got that growth in my litter, but I was also aware of everyone saying that it was going for way more than it should have been. (I traded it for technical overpay but not at all in the "ridiculous" range. in fact the person I traded it to seemed disbelieving that I was willing to let it go for so "little.")

the highest I saw it go for was a mid-september from the now-retired list. and when the pet got its rarity tag, it was an uncommon. it turned rare in the 2019 rarity overhaul but at the time people were furious.

The Dogtag and July PPS are two that come to my mind. The Dogtag used to go for much more compared to what it does today, and the July PPS was pretty high up on the list when it was first created. They're still worth a lot, but they aren't really special compared to other pets that go for the same amount.

I think the issue with that lion was that people assumed it would be worth a lot because it was a PPS lion mixed into a cat litter, just like the August PPS. It was pretty obvious early on that it wasn't going to be that rare (it was similar to how people try to auction off their banner pets for large amounts but eventually everyone is trying to auction them off) but I think people were trying to be clever and were hopeful that it would be rare.

During the 2011 Medieval Faire, this dog was obtainable as a random prize from the "forest clearing" area, and when it first came out, people were overpaying ridiculously hard for it.
In some cases it went for advent lists, and there was no shortage of people chucking old rares and very rares at traders just to get one, while the event was still ongoing and more of those dogs would therefore be released.
It's one of my earliest memories of a case where demand for a pet spiked really fast and then disappeared almost completely after a month or two.
This dog is still uncommon, btw :'D

As for pets on the rares list: The Timberwolf Advent and the Grey Border Collie used to be quite a bit more popular than they are nowadays. This isn't to say that they go for underpay now, but they don't attract the same kind of overpay that was commonly seen for them in 2011/2012.

The Malk Mutant from the 09 staff litter used to be just as hyped up and popular as the Shima Longtail. Once upon a time those two would've been a perfectly fair swap even if you factored demand in.
Seems nobody really cares about that pet any more nowadays.

And last but not least, I'd argue the Sunjewel took a huge fall. It never actually got moved down the list or anything, but back in the early years of the site it was THE big achievement to own a sunjewel. It was expensive, it was popular, everyone dreamt of owning one eventually.
Nowadays it pretty much just exists out there. Everyone knows it's worth a lot, but you see few people actively looking for one or calling it their dreamie. The sunback is much more popular.

old player from 2014. i always take a hiatus once a year,
without fail. however, i was gone for about two years, as
the site wasnt interesting to me anymore! came back and
      fell in love. anyways,
i saw the rares list was discontinued and i was like alright!
      no worries.
however, when it comes to trading, i wish it was back.
i traded for an august pps and i gave around 40 pets for it.
majority of them were very rare. i knew this pet had
demand, and it was a huge dreamie of mine! i love her a lot.
however, the person only accepted it cause of the
quantity, but said it wasn't exactly fair for them?? i was like,
      what??? i dont understand haha.
i love december 18th, but i wish people werent so addicted
to get list pets for a pet not worth a list pet ahh
