"Cormorantfang?"
It was the worried face of Quartz, the young cinnamon pointed apprentice.
"Why are you here?" Cormorantfang cut in, gruffly; his tail lashed in the direction of the herbs he had been stockpiling, and the few cats that had already found themselves in his den. Clearly Yarrowleaf was off somewhere, and this added to the smoke's worry - although he would hardly admit it. "I have work to do."
"I need you somewhere," he insisted, out of breath. "It's urgent."
Cormorantfang almost cut in with an objection, but sighed instead; he had a duty to do, and if Quartz was correct, somecat was in danger. "...show me."
"I could've sworn there was someone here -- they looked like Peardrop, I swear--" Quartz quickly muttered, sheepishly looking down; he'd just wasted Cormorant's time, hadn't he? "I'm sorry, I didn't mean--"
"...do you know how frustrating this is?" he snarled, coming face-to-face with the apprentice, who shrank back. "I have lives to look after. I have cats to care about. I don't care if you 'heard' something,
never do this again!"
"...I'm sorr--"
He was cut off by a whirl of claws; the two, in their squabbling, hadn't heard the other rogues come in, ready to take their opportunity - Quartz was easily taken down by two - while he was much larger than average for his age, he was not ready to take them on, feebly attempting to fight back.
Cormorantfang only had one to worry about.
"Coward," he snarled, throwing the other cat aside after a quick tussle; they must have underestimated his strength, perhaps noting his healer status due to his scent.
He raced over to where the other apprentice was, time bought.
"Let go of him, you cowards!" he screeched, barreling into the group - managing to catch them by surprise. His only goal was to make sure he was safe.
"...Cormorantfang?" he groaned, attempting to step back up. "...why did you..."
"You're my Clanmate. I put my duties before my emotions."
It wasn't long until they were both plunged back into the fight; clearly outnumbered, but attempting to find their way out of the situation.
Quartz hated to reflect upon this part of his story. It was a quick exclamation - "Look out-- behind you!" but with Cormorant distracted, they managed to take the upper hand.
He was trapped.
What was behind him was the cliff.
A drop like that was certainly able to kill a cat, Quartz realized with a pang of fear; if he fell...
With his distraction, Quartz was trapped by the rogue; pinned, and he could only await the final blow...
...but it hadn't come.
He had a sneaking suspicion he was meant to watch what would happen next.
The other two advanced towards the smoke.
"...what are you doing?" he snarled quickly; he was noticeably afraid, for once out of the few times in his life. How was something so fierce reduced to something like... that? "Fight me. Y-- you-- you two,
fight me!"
"Tell me, Clan scum. Are you afraid of heights?" the ginger tabby ringleader snarled in his face, staring the longhair down.
"...I never got to say goodbye," he finally choked; the two rogues pushed him back before he slipped; he gripped the ledge, clawing at the dirt and rocks desperately in some final way to prolong his life.
"I have friends-- I have cats I care about, and, and-- I have an apprentice, and I can't--" his mask failed him this time, and it hurt to see some cat as tough as him... reduced to this. "I can't leave him-- not like Dawn... I made my promise!" he choked, desperately holding on. "
Help me!"
"You're only a stepping stone to our path to glory. You mean nothing else."
"--and will all that matter, if they can't find you?"
"Cormorantfang--
no! What are you
doing?!" Quartz choked, struggling to get up; but to no avail.
There was one thing he was right about; they never did find him. [657]
