“Well, I like to keep her tank clean. Otherwise, she gets all moldy. And that’s gross,” Sunny gushes. She scrambles to find her tank scrubber and gently rubs it against the sides of the tank. “There, clean.” Sunny smiles thoughtfully, thinking of the other things she does for Tahiti. Sunny does a lot of things. But right now, she needs to separate the things Tahiti loves from the things that help Tahiti grow. That’s a lot of stuff. It takes Sunny quite a while, but finally she thinks of something.
“Oh, yeah! I almost forgot. I like taking Tahiti to the movie theater. Finding Dory is her favorite!” Sunny motions towards Tahiti, who is, as of this moment, just a small lump of coral.
“Tahiti! What else do I do that helps you grow?” Sunny whispers to Tahiti. It probably looks odd to the average buttermilk to see someone whispering to coral, but to Sunny, it’s normal. Tahiti is her best friend! She nods quickly after a few seconds.
“Tahiti just loves sitting by the ocean with me while I sing her favorite song. An original, may I add. What do you mean how does it go? I would never sing to you!” Sunny snorts. “Ugh, fine. Here goes!

  Enke handed Pippin a packet of papers so thick that she nearly dropped it as soon as he let go. On the top page were two words typed in a large, bold font: CARE GUIDE.
  "Here, this is everything that you'll need to know about keeping your coral alive," the man explained in a rush. "Corals are picky, so do everything exactly as it says. Don't mess up or you'll kill it. Good luck!" After the simple explanation and a forced smile (much as the job description entailed), Enke handed Eirwen the tank and pointed to a pile of extra supplies before turning to get the next lucky coral ready to be taken off to its new home. He hadn't taken more than a few steps away when he began to grumble to himself under his breath with a sigh. "You'll need all the luck you can get, kids. Why do I even bother when they just kill the poor things..."

  The two girls stood in silence for a moment, oblivious to his words as they stared blankly at the objects in their grasp. Neither was quite sure of what to do from here — how were they going to fit all of this in the car? — but they quickly regained their composure, walking outside with the tiny coral and instruction packet before returning for the rest of the supplies once those had been safely tucked away.

  Once they were buckled in and off to home, Pippin began to skim through the pages of the care guide. The words were complicated and she huffed in frustration, Eirwen snatching the guide off of her lap to read it herself.
  "Wow...coral is super needy," she said in both awe and fear. "Everything has to be just right or it won't survive. Temperature, salinity, acidity, calcium and magnesium...how the heck are we supposed to do all of this from home?!"
  "Wait, what do we feed it?" Pippin jumped in, confused. "Does it need to eat?" Eirwen shook her head.
  "I have no idea. I guess we've gotta find out...that has to be in here somewhere, right?" She paused for a moment, seeing Pippin frown. "Don't worry, we'll take good care of Cni! We have nothing to be afraid of. We're smart enough to do this by ourselves, right?"
  "M-Maybe we should ask Catherine."

Avalon just stared at Melusine in awe. He considered everything he could do to keep his little coral thriving.
"Well, of course she's going to have her basic needs, as all life does."
He looked at the window, straight at the bright sun before flinching from the glare. She's got plenty of sunlight at least.
Though Avalon was experienced with small hydroponic systems and fields of crops, he wasn't too clear on the specifics of coral care. Anyone could guess that the water would have to be clear, and that the salinity and temperature would have to be pretty regular, but Avalon didn't know what other kinds of things it would need to grow.
Thinking back to his little hydroponic lettuce plants, he knew he should at least try to talk to the little coral. Avalon has always loved to tell stories, and though his time with Melusine would be one in itself, he set himself out to write little tales about her future in the beautiful shallows of the big blue sea. Though it may have been a silly thought, the long-eared bull felt his heart swell as he thought of his stories helping his little Melusine grow.

"I think I'd like to just keep her in good company, tell her a few stories and keep her entertained in her time here with us. I'll probably prepare her for life in the reef. She is hardly past a little coral planulae after all."

bluebell observes azurina in her tank, and tried to picture herself living as azurina. she thinks to herself, “what would i want if i was all alone in that little tiny tank?” after a short pause, she lights up. “well, if i were azurina i would want an optimal temperature in my tank, all my nutrients available...” as bluebell pictures herself in a tiny tank, nice and warm and supplied with plenty of food to keep her nice and healthy, she realizes a lot would be missing.
“you’re right, you might also want to make sure the water stays clear, and that you do a little research on corals.” enke appreciates bluebell’s logical response, preparing to send her on her way so he can continue to tend to his own corals.
“but i wouldn’t want azurina to be lonely, as i’m positive she would do her best with a little company. if i bought her some crystals, she wouldn’t be all alone! i’ll get her some rose quartz for love, clear quartz for healing, amethyst for protection and stability, smoky quartz for positive energy, pyrite for success, and a diamond for strength!”
enke looks bewildered, stating “it isn’t necessary to give your coral these stones, but whatever floats your boat I suppose.”
“everybody needs company enke.”
enke scoffs at this remark, as bluebell scurries off to go find her dear azurina some crystal pals.

The next morning, Penelope was up before the sun, packing supplies for her (very unwelcome) stay with Enke. "Observations notebook, check. Pen, check. Sketchpad, check. Pencils, check. Candy, check." Taking a last glance over her small studio apartment, she slung her backpack over her shoulder, and grabbed her beach satchel on her way out.

The sound of a heavy door knocker pulled Enke out of his sleep. He opened the door and groggily groaned when he saw a very chipper Penny, who walked past him and straight towards the jar on the shelf with "Theodosia" written in bold letters. "How is she doing? What are we doing with her today?" Enke moaned. "I haven't even been awake for loner than 3 minutes, can you not?" He huffed. Penelope rolled her eyes and went back to staring into the jar. "I wrote down a list of things to do to try and help her feel better," she said, glancing over her shoulder at Enke, who was fixing himself some breakfast and coffee. "Do tell," he replied sarcastically. Unfortunately for him, Penelope didn't really get sarcasm. "Have you ever heard of the 5 love languages? Well, I've decided that we need to do all 5 every day for her. That's the max amount of love someone can feel." Penny flopped to the floor and set her jar next to her on the ground. Pulling out her notebook, she began to read the list out loud.
"The Five Love Languages of Theodosia
1. Words of Affirmation - She can do this, and we believe in her.
2. Physical Touch - Pet her jar, let her know we're close by.
3. Gifts - Make her a new habitat and make it super comfy.
4. Quality Time - Spend as much time as possible with her.
5. Acts of Service - Give up all personal time to be with her and give her what she needs."
Enke's eyes widened as he realized what this meant. He had practically unknowingly agreed to let Penelope move in until this coral was able to be relocated. His stomach dropped. "Oh god what have I done to myself." He mumbled.

Mia, Sorrel

"I don't do any of that sappy stuff, if that's what you're asking," Mia scoffed indignantly, her voice equally indignant as she continued, "I just do all of the things that science has proven helps coral grow. And I saw someone else give their coral some fish, which I might consider..."

She trailed off into thought for a moment - the idea of giving her coral some fishy friends needed very heavy consideration, after all - but snapped back, quickly adding, "For purely scientific reasons, of course."

Without another word, Mia slips out of the tent. It's only then that Enke notices the other girl who had followed Mia into the tent, though he didn't seem to care much about her presence.

"I'm Mia's friend, Sorrel," she explains, a gentle smile settling on her face, "And I've been helping her take care of the coral you gave her. All of this reef conservation is so exciting, so I just had to drop by and say hi!"

Enke glances in her direction and mumbles something with a furrowed brow, "Hi," he then turns his attention back to his tanks of coral and gave another dry response, "And bye."

His gruff behavior doesn't give Sorrel any pause, however, and she simply continues on talking, "And, just so you know, Mia does go above and beyond for little Maui. I think she might think it's weak to admit to being sentimental, but she really does care about the little fella. In fact, I think she cares for him more than she does most children - or people, for that matter."

"Wonderful," he grunts, not even bothering to glance at Sorrel this time.

Sorrel lets out a light sigh, but her gentle smile doesn't budge as she keeps talking, "You know, she's even made a special place,
right next to her bed, for Maui - and I hear her singing lullabies to the little fella when I pass by her room. I actually think she sings to him until she falls asleep," she paused for a moment to think about the last time she had heard Mia singing, "Yeah, she definitely sings to him until she falls asleep - and she has a gorgeous voice, too! I'm sure Maui has to be happy to be sung lullabies by her."

Enke lets out a sharp, short sigh, but says nothing.

"You know, I really don't think Mia has cared so much about anything before - and she certainly hasn't ever but this much time or effort into anything, not even her carefully cultivated appearance."

Why hello Milo! I need you to grow into a big strong coral for me ok? I love you like a child my sweet coral. Can you please grow? Hmm, guess I'll have to check the notes I wrote down earlier on how to encourage you my love! I grab the notebook and turn the pages on how to grow my coral. First things first, make them comfortable. Well I can do that! Oh my sweet Milo you will love your accommodations! I quickly gather a beautiful soft blanket and place it below the aquarium. Well I think some other life would make you happy wouldn't it my dear? I grab a group of succulents and place them around the aquarium corners. There you are sweetie! Hmm maybe you'd like some decorations! I grab some tea candles and place them atop the blanket corners. Now for some interior decorations! I decide a nice bubble chest will suit you just fine. That should be comfortable enough I smile. Next, play your coral some relaxing and comforting music. Awesome! Perhaps some Adele or Mozart will be nice. I grab my speaker and place it near the aquarium and put on a playlist of Adele and Mozart. I hope you like Rolling in the deep Milo! Thirdly, show your coral some encouragement and support. Well that's easy, there are so many things to say about you my sweet child! I rush over to my desk and decide to write a letter to my coral to prop in front of the aquarium and read every day. Dear Milo, my sweet child, my heart and soul, I cherish you every moment of my life. You always make me happy and cheer me up. I love to watch you grow each and every day you are with me. I wish for you to grow each and every day into a strong coral who will be ready to help replenish the seas! So please my dearest Milo, keep growing g and growing into a big coral! Don't stop no matter what. I love you, -River. Now that should do the trick! I grab a stand and place the letter atop it by the aquarium. Well I think thats all for now, time to watch you grow my lovely!

What are your coral growing methods?:
The first step in growing a potentially haunted coral is identifying it. After all, one cannot treat a PHC as they would any coral. Wait, no, PHC wasnt right. Potentially Cursed Coral was better. Thalia liked the allteration.

But, the second step in caring for a PCC is, of course, trying to exorcise it. Step one had been holy water. When that had failed, she'd turned to verses. She'd even tried hiring a professional, but that had just ended in a scam.

Therefore, obviously, the third step was accepting that the PCC was always going to be haunted. Thalia refocused, attention turning from exorcism to appeasement.

Appeasement meant finding the ideal space in the room. Halfway between the window and the TV, where Spooks could enjoy both the available entertainment but also hard a decent view. Sure, a table in the middle of the room might look odd, but at least Spooks was less inclined to mess with the electricity.

It also meant careful watering and nutrient giving. While Thalia was half convinced Spooks fed off the energy of the room itself, she still had to be careful not to over do anything. Too much substance and the coral wouldn't grow. A hungry Spooks was angry, but a over stuffed Spooks was lethargic and mercurial.

What are your coral growing methods?: otter laid down next to her tiny, growing coral and briefly wondered if she should try to find a blanket or towel to wrap around her, but quickly realized that wasn't a great idea. she didn't know how delicate she was - after all, she didn't know a lot about coral. this was her first visit to the ocean. "well, uh, you're probably warm enough in this summer heat," she offered with a smile. "ya'know, i saw something about plants growing better if they're complimented," she mused. "maybe i should see if it works with coral too?" she looked at the slightly sparkling coral and started her list of compliments. "i bet one day you'll be the prettiest coral in the reef. all the little coral will want to look just like you!" she shifted to her side and surveyed the little growing coral. "and you're going to help the ocean, too. you're not all looks - you have a purpose too!" she glowed with happiness. "i wish every buttermilk could be just like you, sea." she chuckled. "maybe i'll come visit you in the reef when you're all grown up. i love my herd, but you're so much better to talk to sometimes." [202 words]
