Name: Arietty
Gender: Female
Prompt:Featuring August----------------
Arietty sat at the kitchen table, fiddling with her tea cup. The air was heavy with awkwardness, as she sat facing her cousin August.
The two couldn't have been more different in her mind. While their genetic connection could clearly be seen in their shared monochrome colours, Arietty had the added pop of being rainbow. To add on to that, she was very aware of the fact that August's parents were grooming him to become a successful businessman, and if she were to go by her aunt and her husband, August would most likely be... very boring. She herself was a free spirit, an artist! Spending time with some stuck-up snob who only wanted money was the opposite of what she wanted to do, but her mother had forced her to come here to spend time with her relatives... exactly why that was, she couldn't understand. Maybe her mother wanted her to abandon her dreams of becoming an artist by showing her what people with REAL jobs were like, in which case she was failing miserably. So far, all that had happened was boredom and awkwardness.
"..."
Neither said anything for quite a long while. Arietty quietly took a sip of her tea, looking at anything but her cousin. Finally, she couldn't take the silence anymore and cleared her throat.
"Ahem, so... Uuh, August, how old did you say you were again?" she awkwardly blurted out. Oh man, social interaction really wasn't her forte... Luckily, it seemed that neither was it his, as he was just as awkward in return.
"I'm pretty sure I didn't, uh... what was your name?" he replied less than smoothly. His internal cringe was almost visible, and this seemed to have the effect of putting Arietty at ease for some reason. Maybe he wasn't a completely lost to the world of politicians and business brokers... She smiled, a little more relaxed now.
"It's Arietty. And if you're wondering, I'm 27 now. It's only fair that I answer a question I asked in the first place I guess, huh?" she blurted out, a little less awkwardly this time. She fidgeted some more as she spoke, and while August replied again, she quickly removed the strand of her hair from her teacup where it had fallen in, hoping he didn't notice.
"Oh cool. So uh, I'm 24 now I think" he said. If he HAD noticed the hair in the tea, he didn't show it.
Arietty paused for a second before continuing. "You think? You don't even know your own age?" she asked with scepticism in her voice. What the heck... how can someone NOT know their age? That's just dumb, to Arietty at least. August looked back at her sheepishly.
"Hey cut me some slack, ok? I'm real busy with the police academy and my studies, and it's not like I have to use my age much for anything. And I mean it keeps changing each year so it gets hard to keep track of, you know? As soon as I'm used to it, suddenly it's changed!" he exclaimed, getting more and more into his thoughts as he spoke, only to end with an exasperated throw of his arms. He huffed before crossing his arms. "Don't tell me you've never forgotten your age, it happens to everyone at least once!"
Arietty almost forgot to answer again, as she had gotten completely distracted by a detail of what he had said.
"Ok wait, the police academy? Aren't you studying to become like... I dunno, a senator or big-wig up in the business circles?" she finally got out, completely ignoring the previous topic.
August scratched his head. "No, not really... I mean I guess my parents tried to get me into something like that when I was younger, but I... kinda rebelled, and now I'm becoming a police officer. I'd rather not talk about my past if that's alrighty, man" he muttered sheepishly. Arietty took another sip, focused on August as he spoke.
"Well, am I glad for that..." she muttered before realising that she had just said that out loud. Her face drained of colour as she realised that it might be taken as rude. "U-uh not that there would have been anything wrong with talking about your past or anything, I just mean-" she sputtered, before being interrupted.
"Oh dude it's fine!" August said with a barely contained laughter in his voice. "I get it, I wouldn't wanna hang with someone who's a business person either, they are incredibly boring!" He finally gave an amused laugh. He calmed down, looked up at Arietty... and promptly started laughing again. "I'm sorry man, but your face right now is too funny!"
Arietty huffed, finally getting some colour back in her face. Ok, so, he wasn't a complete bore... that's great! Fantastic. Maybe they can actually TALK about something and not be incredibly bored the entire week she had to spend here...
She took a deep breath, exhaled... and tried to remain positive. August was nice. This was going to be just ok.
