biggest fear; Her biggest fear is the dark. She is afraid of what may lurk in the blackness of night. She visibly wilts when darkness is mentioned and runs very quickly at night when she needs to get up for something. This is because of an event in her childhood she was very young, around three when an unwanted guest came into her home and gave her quite the scare and even hurt her before her father drove him away. She still sees his face in the shadows and won't go outside at night unless someone she knows can protect her is with her. (word count: 102)

Myrmecophobia; the fear of ants.
It began at a birthday party. A lovely outdoor birthday party on a warm summers day. A light breeze drifted across the yard. Balloons were tied to the white picket fence. A picnic table was by the Shady Tree, as she called it. On the table, pastel pink paper plates and white plastic forks. A space was cleared in the middle for the cake to be brought out later.
But right now, these young kids were on a mission.
Theresa had her birthday hat stuck on firmly, and a very determined expression on her face as she listened to the grown ups explain the rules of the scavenger hunt. The other children were hopping around with excitement, but she tried to stay calm. She was the birthday girl. She would help them all win the prize.
They received their first clue, and off they went. The adults watched in amusement as they puzzled over the clue, and ran off in different directions. It took a few minutes for everyone to be on the same page, and the next clue was found. The cycle continued, and the excitement grew as the children zipped around the yard.
The last clue stumped them; a special place with a wooden face.
But Theresa knew. "I know!" She exclaimed. "It's the Shady Tree! There's a face in the bark!"
Off she dashed towards the tree, the others hot on her heels. While they searched the bushes close to the trunk, she was down to the ground, and she started prodding around the roots. Near the back she found a hollow in the ground, under one of the roots. They've hidden it, she giggled to herself.
In went her hand, feeling around in the hole. Her fingers brushed something odd. This must be it! She grabbed it and pulled. Two things happened at once.
One, she realized her arm was stuck.
Two, this was not the prize.
It was an ant nest.
She felt them; thousands of tiny insects swarming around her fingers, her hand. Eyes wide with horror, she watched as, almost in slow motion, they began to climb up her arm. Her stomach twisted, and she felt sick at the feeling of all of their tiny legs on her body, prickling, tickling, making her skin crawl.
A scream escaped her mouth.
She began yanking her arm back madly, twisting it, trying to get free, but it only stirred the ants up more. She gave another sharp pull on a mistaken bad angle, and a pain suddenly bloomed in her elbow. Tears began streaming down her face, and she screamed again.
Adults came running. They tried to comfort her with reassuring words, but she hardly heard them. All she could focus on was the feeling of the ants. As they tried to get her loose, horrific images began to fill her head. She imagined she could feel the ants crawling up her shoulder, her neck, onto her face, up her nose, into her mouth-
A wild panic gripped her; her breathing became ragged, pulse thumping, and she let out another scream.
Her arm popped out.
The ants came with it.
The other children had been herded inside, and a few were worriedly peering out of the window. Theresa, tears still streaming down her face, sobs heaving from her chest, was shaking like a leaf. She was taken to the outside tap, and the ants were washed from her body. Even so, her skin was still crawling.
Days after this, she still had the feeling. The sprain in her elbow hardly bothered her. There were nights when she would wake from sleep, sweating and gasping, after dreaming that thousands of ants were swarming over her body.
Even now, years later, she can't shake her fear of the tiny insects. Some people don't understand her fear, but she can hardly tell them why she does, because of the panic it sends her into. It's made it harder for her to be outside for long, and she's constantly checking the area where she's sitting. She loves the fresh air, and she does love nature, really.
Just not some of the things that live there.
