So... I’m going to attend my first con next and Am really excited!
Is there anything I should know before/attending a con?

I’m pretty jazzed I just finished my head of my OC just in time for Halloween. She’s a Tantamque (tan-tam) and is a closed species. It’s like a unicorn griffin with weird legs and a fox tail. Anyway I JUST finished the head but will still be adding magnetic eyelids!

(Lol she needs some brushing tho, sorry for blurry pic too. I just get so excited to see XD)

She’s 100% made by me; foam base, furring, eyes, etc.
She’s all hand sewn too and I’m excited for Halloween!
Please comment on your thoughts if you’d like. This is like my fourth head so suggestions/compliments are welcome!

AAAH HOW CUTE!! How did you sew it all by hand?? Didn't that hurt like crazy?

Ahh this is adorable! Is it your first go at making head? This is really nice! ;u; I plan on making my first fursuit late this year or eraly next year.

^^it took me some time to do it by hand but I find it easier than setting up a machine just to have the sewing machine break on me XD So I do it by hand and it takes much less time: plus no loud noise and I can jam to my Panic! At the Disco

^ive made about three other heads. Oh dear my first one was a year ago and it was made of duct tape and tinfoil base. Omg it’s embarrassing to think about actually. Luckily this character had some experience before it was made! Otherwise I assure you it wouldn’t be as good as it is!

Here’s some suggestions:
-don’t use tinfoil like I did

Just don’t
-take as much time as you need. Do not rush to finish!
-make sure you pattern and try your best to sew your seams. It’ll look a lot better c:
-watch 10,936,383,643 videos and make just as many references! (I make 3D references with clay before I start shaping)
-SAVE up enough money for good material! Again, no tinfoil bases but the fur is just as important
•you can get good fur on many sites but if you’re going on a budget either save up or get it for just about $20 a yard on amazon
•the blue fuzzball I just made was made with amazon fur so if you’re nervous- mine is an example

Anyway I’m hoping within be next two years to make a suit of Nigiri (my sig) because why not c:

im not sure if theres a proper place to ask buT does anyone have any tips for making yarn tails? i want to try and start doing that but i havent really found any helpful tutorials ;w;

Didn't even think of Amazon for fur! Any tips on carving? That's the hardest part for me. I'm probably gonna buy a base to make my Duster head since I found a really good pony base I can alter to make it an eohippus.

My dilemma is how to do the hands and feet. Here's Duster's non-MLP ref, eohippi have really weird toes so I'm not sure how to pull it off.

What a beautiful head, @Dis!! I'm working on my second head (gave up on the first one) and haven't worked on it since earlier in the summer...I dunno. I just lack motivation, even though I REALLY want to finish it. Sewing by hand kinda stinks, but I really hate the hassle of a machine and mine isn't strong enough for faux fur. Plus, sewing the head by hand is better.

Great tips, anyhow! I just need to sit myself down and force myself to work on it, I guess, haha.

Sorry for the late reply! Anyway for carving, I suggest you make a ton of references! Don’t ‘make it up as you go.’ Cut foam how you want and FIX mistakes you see. Fur doesn’t cover up all mistakes. Anyway, keep carving until you’re happy with it. Don’t rush. Rushing only leads to problems.

For hands, you can glue foam onto cheap fall gloves. Then just pattern that as you would the head- with taping methods.




Anyway so my band is having a performance and they said we get to wear costumes. We’re marching so I’m concerned if I should wear my head or not. I want to since it’ll make me happy and I’m confident in my eyesight and the short drill, but does anyone else have thoughts?

Here's my new fursuit! It features digitigrade padding, moving jaw, and following eyes. She's technically my second fursuit, but my first only consisted of a head and tail and store-bought werewolf hands. I'd say I've definitely improved since last year. I made this new one in a little over 3 weeks. Yes, I know it's a really bad idea to rush, but I'm a rebel.

Anyway, her name is Tala! Here's some pictures of her WIP to finished.




General base made around a balaclava with eyes drawn on.




Shapes added, most gaps filled, and foam smoothed. Eye templates added.




More foam added and smoothed, and I added the eyes, nose, ears, teeth, tongue, and lined the mouth.




Taped for pattern (doing ears kind of separately). Ready to fur!




Fur hand sewn together but not yet stuck on. She also needs a shave!




Done! Along with the suit. It turned out to be a kinda huge head but it doesn't look too big with the digitigrade padding at least.
