Despite the cold, Alajax could feel sweat dripping down his face. Who exactly is this guy? Why wouldn't they show themselves to him? Still, ever the courteous kjaku, Alajax listened intently to the stranger's words trying to make sense of what he was hearing.
"It might help me... To know what it is, a dark lingering fear? Something dark and forgotten from the past?" Tilting his head, Alajax thought hard, digging through what little knowledge the mascot could muster and ultimately decided on an answer. "Honestly, I don't know. I'm not going to pretend to know either." Alajax's voice faded softly as he shook his head. "I guess, the best answer I can give is that your nightmares are what you make them." Sensing confusion, Alajax shrugged. "I know, I know. It's a confusing concept. Let me try to explain... So everyone is afraid of something, right? But what you are afraid of I guess differs from person to person. Why does it do this?"
Looking through the darkness, Alajax's eyes fell on a little sprout beside the old tree stump. "Take a look at this sprout. You see, it's young and hasn't lived very long. It doesn't have to worry about people chopping it down or using it as a chair. It's innocent and unknowing. They say ignorance is bliss and this little sprout is a great example of this." He stood again, motioning to the trees that made up the darkened forest. "These trees though, they know fear. They've seen sprouts die, animals killed by animals for food, and they've seen us cutting down other trees. Every day they live never knowing what could happen the next and for some, these trees are living a nightmare. A nightmare of fear formed around what could be." Alajax's face lit up suddenly and his eyes burned with light. "But you see, though these trees live a nightmare, they're still alive. Alive maybe... but truly living?" He said boldly, puffing out his chest and facing the stranger with a grin. "Everyone is afraid of something, what could happen... what has happened... both are equally horrifying in their own right. But it doesn't matter what you're afraid of... only that you're willing to seek the courage to push through it. Overcome your nightmares and don't let them rule you. Find people willing to help you, support you through even through the darkest times and to show you the light at the end of the tunnel. And..." he smiled softly, turning his gaze down to the stump they stood beside. "Sometimes courage isn't enough, and that's ok."
Alajax brushed his hand gently against the tree stump, taking a second to count the many rings that made up its core. "This tree is probably the bravest in all the forest." He pointed out the rings within it, taking notice of each time the ring showed variation. "Do you see this black piece here? Outside of the ring? This tree has faced fire, drought even if you look at how close these rings are here. Most of these trees around us fear the very things this little stump has seen. You know what's incredible about this stump though?" He waited a moment with baited breath before finishing. "It's still here. Despite everything that's happened to it... fire, drought... even being cut down, this little stump is still here. A little broken and a little worn but it still provides an important role in this ecosystem. Rather than dwelling on the darkness that surrounds it and the events of it's past, this stump has found it's place here and built the foundation for life." Gently Alajax pulled off a piece of bark, showing him the many little ants and insects that now called this stump home.
"You know... you and I are a lot like this stump." Alajax returned the bark and looked back towards the stranger, a knowing glint in his eyes. "I may not know your nightmare, but I know you have one... and you know I have one. We all have a nightmare and we all have a choice. We can choose to be a sprout, remaining blind to the world and it's dangers until ultimately that blindness leads to our demise. We can live like a tree, tall and unbendable yet ever so breakable. Afraid of the toughest breeze coming our way and knocking over or facing the risks of the future. So afraid we are that we find, even though we're alive, we never truly live. We fear the consequences of risk so much that we never take any and instead live our lives going through the motions of day to day. And then last but far from least, we can live like this stump. We've seen the world... we know the dangers that could come and we've faced them head-on. We've been bent, broken even and yet we don't dwell on it. What has happened has already happened and nothing we can do right now will change anything, so why dwell on it? Instead of dwelling on the fires or droughts of our lives after they've happened, we should turn our focus to the life we have left to live and the light we can give. Just like this stump we can break away from our pasts and use them to inspire us towards a future full of life."
Alajax wore a wide smile on his face as he finished, feeling confident in his explanation and feeling better having said his part. As a yawn tugged the corners of his mouth, he found that talking had relaxed him a bit and he could feel the edges of exhaustion pulling at him. Still, he knew what needed to be said. "As I said... I don't know what a nightmare is, but I know what to do after one. Keep you're head high and keep moving forward. Focus on the future instead of hiding from the past. We all may have nightmares but I want you to remember, we all have a morning to wake up to, too."
