They lived on the remote moorland of England so it was difficult to keep in contact with anyone anyway. A year after her brother was born, her parents were involved in a head on car collision- her father died at the wheel upon impact and her mother followed later in hospital from her injuries.

Why are they going to colonize the new planet?:
After foot and mouth disease wiped out all their livestock practically overnight, there was nothing left. In a last ditch effort Ollie decided to sign up for the colonization project in hope of providing a new, better life for both her and Finn. So, after selling her family's house, land and remaining animals (the cats, dog and chickens), she packed their prized belongings and boarded the ship.
