One thing I can recommend is to use a seperate layer for the background so it won't be on top of Chara. Hope this helps!

I recommend using layers as the other person stated! Layer 1 for the backround, layer 2 for color, and layer 3 for lines.
I also recommend using smoothing 70-85% I'd say? It helps the lines get smoother.
