Hope sniffed the air as she ran, chasing a rabbit through the brush. She was getting closer, the scent getting stronger as she kept running. When she was almost to the rabbit she heard the sound of crakling brush, a thump, and then she knew what had happened. She flew into the little clearing where the rabbit wa to find it in the jaws of one of her brothers - again. She sighed, and made her way back to her mother. "Mama," she asked, "why do my brothers and even my sister always seem to catch the prey I was stalking?" Her mother thought a moment before replying, "I'm not sure sweetie but I'll talk to them again. I know it's not easy being the youngest but when you grow up I'm sure you'll be the best hunter our pack has ever seen." With that Hope's mother gave her a reasuring lick and she settled against her mother's warm side, wishing she was a good hunter now.

Lifting the pups one by one out of their whelping box, the man looked over each very carefully. "4... 5... 6... But I thought there were seven?" He glances over at his wife, sitting on the couch drinking an iced tea. "There are," she replied. "The little one hides." Turning back, the man sets down the puppy he is holding and gently moves the mother's leg to reveal a small black pup with bright orange eyes. "Weird coloring for a German shepherd," the man remarks, lifting the coal-black young dog. The pup barks, alarmed, and the wife chuckles. His little head turns, ears perked, and he looks at her very intently. Suddenly his tiny delicate paws burst into flame, lighting up his face and reflecting triangular markings that had gone unnoticed. Both humans shriek and the man drops him in terror. The pup scrambles to his feet clumsily, having never used them before, and skitters toward the door. He leans his front paws on the screen door and quickly scorches two little spots through it. Crouching, he launches himself through the bigger one and split the entire screen door in half. Leaving the carpet smoldering, the humans confused and terrified, and his mother triumphant, the pup bounds through a gap in the fence and disappears into the shadows.
Although he has supernatural strength and agility, the self-named Ignis is desperate for other dogs and isn't satisfied with his lonely life as a wanderer. His double tails, odd markings, and obviously his flaming paws make it impossible for him to risk going into civilization, and really, there aren't many wild dogs in eastern Oregon. So he roams and hopes, and for now, Ignis is alone.
