not a mod, but at the moment you don't need to reserve names! (plus, i dont think anyone has used those names) i've seen multiple aspens and what not, so you're okay!

So I was just reading over the lore and was wondering: do we know for sure what type of animal the β€œBeast” is? It sounds kind of like a snake to me. Or maybe a cat? Thoughts?

And also: how advanced are the mice? I keep wanting to include, like, a fire pit in the center of my village as a gathering spot but I don’t know if they know anything about fire. Are the VoK mice advanced enough for that? Also, what types of structures do they have in their villages? Just burrows and such, or could they build primitive shelters/huts and things? I ask because one of the featured art pieces is of some VoK using sticks as planks and, like, pulleys/ropes made out of grass and wanted to know if such building techniques were canon. c:
Just some thoughts!! I keep formulating ideas for my mice’s village but don’t want my tribe to exceed the canon level of technology (:” I’d love to hear some of you guys’ thoughts also!

Hi again nat13! What literal.trash has said is correct; at the moment, there's no officially way to reserve names, but equally there are no current rules against mice with the same name. Whether there are plans to implement either of these things remains up to souldier to say.

Knickknacks wrote:So I was just reading over the lore and was wondering: do we know for sure what type of animal the β€œBeast” is? It sounds kind of like a snake to me. Or maybe a cat? Thoughts?

Hi Knickkacks!

Personally, I read it as a cat the first time, but now I've read through again the description does make it sound a lot like a snake! It could be anything, though~

As for the advanced question, nothing, so far, has really been set in stone. The Glossary/Tribe Members descriptions does give us these little bits of information;

souldier wrote:This is no ordinary stump, though. It has been carefully hollowed out, and covered with a delicately woven grass mat. The insides of this log is carved with murals, tales of bravery, honour and heroism...
Many watch mice also have incredible dancing skills, when the tribe is celebrating the appointing of a new leader or mentor it is not uncommon to find these graceful mice twirling through the air with grass ribbons, or shiny objects they find attached to their tails for an added effect. They love to entertain their tribe members.

souldier wrote:Some weave baskets from dried grass, and therefore can carry more food.

souldier wrote:The healers are mice who certainly know their stuff - they learn how to use the natural medicine that nature provides for them... these mice will most certainly have a poultice or some bitter herbs to heal their tribemates.

souldier wrote:Builders are, well, builders. They construct the food storages, dig tunnels, and create sleeping places for their ever growing tribe...A good tribe ideally has at least 3 builders, as work is almost always being needed on their villages.

souldier wrote:When a baby mouse reaches 20 days old, they are ready to start their training.
The first week of their training is easy - observing and having a go at each role in the tribe,
to help them decide what they want to do.

So we can gather from this that the Valley of Kagonn mice certainly are more advanced than your average mouse! I cannot answer for souldier, who will have to weigh in their say to finalise it, but a culture that has mastered basket-weaving and artistic carvings I'd say was certainly advanced enough to build primitive shelters. As you said, Chrom's artwork of their builder Piper shows two mice using a pulley system to move twigs around, and as souldier really liked that piece and made no mention of it being too advanced, we must assume that its a perfectly acceptable level of technology.

As for the fire, I'd personally say that if you're building structures, training other mice, and able to make poultices, it's not unbelievable that you could capture some fire from, say, a lightning strike, realise its usefulness, and bring it back to be kept going by someone or other. However, it's a fair step up from there towards actually being able to make fire.

Either way, ultimately, it's up to souldier to have the last say; they know the creation they have created, and the vibe they want to impart, and they get the final word.

Additionally, I just wanted to drop this mouse age calculator here for anyone who might want it! It will give you the mouse age, and tell you the human equivalent. It basically says;

  • 1 month = 14 years
  • 2 months = 20 years
  • 4 months = 26 years
  • 6 months = 34 years
  • 8 months = 42 years
  • 10 months = 50 years
  • 12 months/1 year = 58 years
  • 24 months/2 years = 70 years
  • 36 months/3 years = 100 years

Ah on the topic of buildings, I was hoping that my mice could live in structures they built in a tree? Like they'd weave little dens to live in and hang them from a tree but idk if thats ok.

Thanks to the rarity change i finally got an omgsr!!! It's been a goal of mine since 2013 aaa

Hi there,
What excellent questions!

β€œThe beast” is from what we know a long bodied killer creature - it fits the description of a weasel or stoat.

These mice don't usually use fire, as they have no need for it, and aren't capable of knowing it as anything but dangerous.
They are so small their bodies don't need to gain warmth from fire, however some tribes that live high up in the mountains where it can get very cold have been known to bring warm coals from nearby volcanoes to heat dens in times of desperation. So, answering your question, these mice can in rare cases use fire related objects, but cannot produce them themselves and prefer not to mess with such a powerful force of nature.

They can also build simple structures, and are often known to weave grass into their homes, but aren't physically capable of building stone buildings or "houses". Though every mouse tribe is different, and has different home styles and renovation skills, remember they are mice and not people ;)

When I first designed the RP game it was originally a book series I was writing, but I wanted others to be able to interact with it and make it unique and special. I'll eventually have a thread filled with short story snippets c;

I hope this answers your questions!
