I don't like a dremel because I've caught not only fur but skin as well when she moved and it kicked back. Just the memory of her screaming in pain is enough I don't ever want to try again with that. Might use it if I ever have a short coated dog but I don't know. I just use clippers and a nail file. I've done a lot of work with Chloe on training her to accept having her nails clipped and we've made a lot of progress. I use a flashlight to show the quick and keep some styptic powder handy just in case. I used to use cornstarch but Chloe once kept licking at a nail and it kept bleeding to the point where I had to bandage the paw.

I think if I ever had another dog with dark nails I'd spring for the clippers that supposedly detect the quick but I've never tried them. I think with clippers too it's good to invest in a pair that is good and comfortable to hold.
Honestly I think the best method regardless is proper training so the dog is easy to work with.
