"if you would keep still, it wouldn't hurt as much!" acciapaw blurted out, irritation rippling
through his usually composed gaze. splitkit wondered briefly if it was because he felt pity-
or guilt- for her accident. if he was a better medicine cat, she could imagine his thoughts,
than splitkit's ear would not remain forever scarred and forever split right down the middle.
or, perhaps the long cut on the bridge of her nose would have not scarred; or maybe, her ot
her ear's tip would not be shredded. well, at least acciapaw didn't seem stare or gawk at her
wounds longer than he needed to wrap it.
"well maybe if you weren't so prickly with your long claws, it wouldn't hurt as much!" the calico
she-cat retorted, flicking her ear in annoyance. she gasped as the sudden tide of pain that
washed over her at just the tiniest of movements.
"buntingki- i mean, splitkit, i didn't mean to upset you. i'm sorry." he apologized briskly, guilt c
oming over him in sudden tsunami tides of waves. she couldn't help but roll her eyes furiously.
"it's fine. are you done yet?" she merely squeaked, forgetting to keep her composure as more p
ain shot through her. it felt as though she had a massive headache and it hadn't left for the last
five sundowns.
"i'm done. come back tomorrow. don't rough-house with adderkit, or shadowkit, or any of them,
for that matter." acciapaw murmured, looking in the distance as though there was something very
important there. splitkit glanced at him, squinting her eyes and flexing her claws.
"whatever you say," she muttered, feeling somewhat shy as she gazed at his gray-face and striking
blue eyes. they sent her far away; in a world of their own. she wondered if she would ever come ba
ck, when suddenly and abruptly acciapaw sharply turned his head, and padded away without another
word. does he know something i don't?

"i can't believe she's back." whispered skydance, her long silver and white fur flowing in the wind.
"how dare she show her face here, after abandoning poor shadowkit and pumpkin
kit, without even naming them? i practically raised her kits for her!" diamond murmured back, step
ping in front of the two black kits protectively.
"what do you mean? are you not our momma?" shadowkit squeaked, suddenly no longer the biggest,
strongest kit in the nursery.
"i will always be your mother." the siamese she-cat whispered back fiercely, licking shadowkit then
pumpkinkit.
"if you have come for your kits, they are not permitted to leave the clan." it was frecklestar's turn
to assert her dominance. "they belong to drizzleclan, not a hare-brained queen who leaves their
newborn's for another queen to care for."
"oh, i do not care for my kits. only their claim to the throne- your throne that is. it seems their
father- yes, the one you murdered, foxheart- was your predecesor. and seeing how you changed
the rules into a monarchy, i would say that i'm the rightful heir to the throne until they are of age.
you do see that, don't you dearest frecklestar?"
