Sonskyn
Sonskyn is the Afrikaans word for sunshine, referring to the her bright red, orange and yellow tail and colourful spots; and the place she comes from, Africa. The other puffbirds in this story also have African names. Natlei means water, Lug means sky, Aarde means earth, and Ster means star.
"Chaeep! Caw! Coracora!"
The puffbirds sounded their calls, greeting the sun rising over the African plain. The grasses rustled at their feet, and the wind blew around their feathers. Millions upon millions of them; red, blue, yellow and everything in between came up out of burrows, logs and any place where a puffbird might find a home. They all called to the morning sun, sounding their calls into the air.
My four puffbird siblings and I woke up to the cacophony, and bounced out of bed. “Come on!” the littlest, Natlei, said. “It’s calling time.”
“I know.” said Lug, the tallest. “We hear it every day.”
“Oh, don’t be such a grump, Lug. You know Natlei loves it.” gently scolded Aarde, the most mature.
Ster, the oldest, looked around. “Where’s Sonskyn?” he asked. “I hope she hasn’t run to that rock again.
“No, I’m here.” I said. “I’m just looking at the sunrise.” I could feel the burning in my soul as I watched it, the passion that set me apart from the others. That would let me, today, follow my goal wherever it went. Follow the Sun.
After we were all ready, me and my sibs walked outside. The hot African sun shone down on us as we walked to the rock for the last time. Tearfully, we waved goodbye to our parents and the other puffbirds, and set out on our journey to find our new home.
We walked east for many months. The Sun shone on us during the day, and the moon at night. I always felt lost at night, without the Sun to follow. We snuggled together in a fluffy puffbird pile to keep warm, and we slept under the silver moon and stars. There were no calls waking us in the morning but our own, yet still we went onward, further and further outward, until we reached the Ocean.
Natlei left us there. When we first caught sight of it, she ran forward and jumped into the water, splashing, exulting in the waves and the liquid’s embrace. She turned around to us and smiled. “I’ve found my home!” she exclaimed. “I will live among the waves, and the fish will wake me up in the morning with their bubbles.” We bade her goodbye and continued on our journey.
The next sibling to leave us was Lug. We had just climbed a great mountain. He sat there and felt the wind in his feathers. “This is my home,” he said. We nodded, and went down the mountain.
Now, the nights got warmer. I thought this just as well, since there were less of us. We wandered further from our home until we reached a place full of green, the like of we had never seen before. The raucous calls of wildlife and wild puffbirds greeted us as we walked through dripping wet branches and colourful foliage.
Aarde gazed around her in wonder and love. She sighed. “I shall make this place my home, “ she said. “And I shall spend my nights and days listening to the rain fall and the animals sing.” We felt delighted for her, as we knew she was meant to be there.
Finally, there was only Ster and I left. We travelled a long, long way south, and the days got shorter and shorter. I was depressed. I missed the Sun, but we had to find Ster’s home first.
Finally, we came to a place where there was nothing but ice, stretching everywhere the eye could see. There was no day, only an endless night which spanned forever. The cold threatened to overwhelm me, but Ster seemed right at home. So it came as no surprise to me when he simply sat down on the icy waste and stared up at the stars. I left him there ready to go back to the Sun and continue my journey.
I travelled: always following the Sun, and always falling behind. The silvery light of the moon and stars did not satisfy me, as it has Ster, and I yearned for the Sun to rise. I could feel it calling my name, Sonskyn, as I tried to follow.
Then, I met an amazing sight. A city of grey and red met my eyes, with enormous blocks of metal reaching up to the sky like fingers. I stared, shocked at this great wonder. And then I saw. There were animals walking about, animals with two legs and two arms and clothes of every colour. And, to my delight and wonder, they all had a Sun inside them
I walked through the city, marvelling at each walking Sun. I learnt that they were humans, and the Sun was their soul, shining. I decided that I must find the brightest of them, to follow them, to love them. And I wandered, looking, until I came here. I knew immediately that this was the place the bright souls gathered, those who had enough love to take me in and to take many more. I sighed happily, knowing I had found my home.
And so I ask you now. Will you take me, love me, know me, and let me share the light in your soul?
