Here's my submission to the contest!
This is the ancestor of modern dragons. Unlike its flying, fire-breathing descendants, this beast made its home in the ocean during the time of the dinosaurs.
It is a predator that scours the oceans for prey, from the surface to the dark depths. Once in sight, it shoots an intense blast of hot water from its mouth, scalding its prey on sight. It will then swallow whatever it is whole.
They lay their egg spawns in the safety of the tropical coral reefs. The next generation is on their own.
They have both gills and primitive lungs. They do not typically crawl onto land, but they have been known to rush land animals like an orca whale. The main use of their lungs is to take gulps of air from the surface. It helps them heat water and will later be part of the fire breathing process in their descendants.
And that's all I can think of for this creature! Thanks for reading this over!
