Tracker Dog Application Series 9 Username: -Jezi-
Tracker Dog you want:#29
Name you'll give it:Puma
There's a big long explanation for why I chose this name that has to do with ancient civilizations and such, but I won't bore you to death with it XD
The short version is that "Stone Puma" was the translation for the name of a lake important to the Inca and the name Puma just kinda stuck to him. And he does look a bit Stone-like doesn't he?
Long version if you're interested:
his design has always kind of reminded me of an ancient engraving so when I was trying to come up with a name for him I started looking up ancient civilizations, mostly I was trying to find the name of an ancient civilization that fit him but I came across Lake Titicaca while trying to find more about the Inca people. Lake Titicaca was important to the Inca because in their mythology Lake Titicaca is the site where Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo were sent down to earth by the sun and founded the Inca Empire. I was intrigued by the story of Lake Titicaca so I kept reading and learned that one translation for Titicaca is "Rock Puma" (or "Stone Puma" both were said in the article) and another translation is "Crag Of Lead". I kind of tested the translations and "Titicaca" as a name for him, and Puma just stuck to him.
Reason why you want it:To put it simply, I fell in love with him the first time he was up for adoption, but I could not think of anything as a purpose for him, much less a intro that wasn't a bunch of forced words. His design is beautiful as well, and I'm not quite sure why, but he has always reminded me of ancient runes. I have always been fascinated with ancient civilizations and the culture behind them so when Puma reminded me of them I couldn't resist falling in love.
Will it be used in any kind of story?Hehe, Yepp X3 He'll have episode stories like Revo ^^ (need to start actually writing those ;_; I promise I do think of them X3) His stories will probably be more upbeat and fun though, since he doesn't have to deal with the stress of war like Revo does.
Describe its personality:High Energy - Puma loves to run around and could do so all day, hes like a toddler, never running out of energy and always having a good time.
Playful - Puma does his work well, but as soon as he's done working he'll be off chasing a squirrel or getting into some other mischief. But if his owner can find a way to make work as fun as playtime Puma will have no trouble concentrating on work at all.
Determined - He won't give up on getting something done. This means he's a good tracker who won't give up on his job, but this also means that if there's food on the counter and he wants it he'll find a way to get to it.
(note to self - keep food off of countertops)
Loyal - Puma loves his master and will do anything for them. He would risk his life for them and not give it a second thought. He'll follow his master anywhere, which sometimes brings a bit of trouble when trying to go to restaurants so Puma and his master stick to the places where the restaurant owners welcome both of them. (Their favorite place is the steakhouse just up the road from the police station)
Loves Rain - Puma will sit for hours just watching the rain fall outside the window and if you open the door while its raining Puma won't waste a second in bolting out the door and getting instantly covered in mud. (try not to have any white furniture right by the door where he'll come in after this, he shakes mud everywhere)
PurposeHaving previously been a police dog who tracked down many people, Puma has "retired" to the good life of visiting classrooms and showing young children what a tracker dog would do on the job. He visits the schools and shows off his tracking skills by playing "hide and seek" with the kids. His record for finding all of the students in a class who have hidden is just over a minute and 1 minute and 5 seconds. (Granted the children had a very small area to hide in, but Puma is still proud of this achievement). His job now is more of a game and he thoroughly enjoys tracking and playing with all of the school children, but once in awhile he'll be assigned a "real" mission if the police department is short on k-9 units.
His master and loving ownerName: Kari (Wife to Revo's owner Fin)
Age: 20
Personality: Kari is just as fun-loving as Puma, but she ha a little bit better idea of when its time to work and when its time to play. She knows how to keep Puma focused on his work and let him have fun at the same time. She can get a bit irritated when Puma tries to stay up all night (she uses up all her energy trying to keep up with him during the day) but she would never yell at him for any reason.
Write an introduction for your Tracker:I don't remember much about the day I was brought back here; everyone kept murmuring about how it was so sad I had to come back, that I was abandoned and left here by Iris, I wanted to tell them that I hadn't been abandoned, that I simply was no longer needed. Iris did not abandon me, she simply moved on to a different career, one was not able to help her with. Of course, any tracker would have preferred to stay with his owner but I was fine, they told me I could play more now and I love to play, so I was looking forward to being adopted again. It wasn't long after I was returned that Kari walked in to the tracker dog facility, she didn't seem like much then, really very quite in fact, but when they brought me out to see her I could smell a small round object in her grasp.
"They told me you like to play, let's see how you do at tracking down your toys" I could hear the smile in her voice as she spoke and she kindly led me outside, letting me sniff the ball but snatching it away before I could grasp it.
"Will one of you go hide this please?" She asked of the workers who had followed us, one took the ball and left quickly. I tried to follow where the man was going so I wouldn't have to hunt for that tempting red ball for too long.
"Ah ah, no cheating. It's not a game if you cheat, and whats the fun in that?" Obviously she realized what I was doing, but I didn't want to ruin the game (we were playing a game! I love those) so I stopped tracking the man's movements and instead tried to see if Kari had any other toys I could play with until she let me go find the ball. Finally, the man came back, the ball no longer in his hands and Kari flashed that smile of hers once again.
"Alright, go play!" I didn't waste a second bounding after the bright scent that I knew belonged to that ever so wanted toy. I hardly stopped for a moment to make sure I didn't lose the trail and soon enough my long tongue was wrapping around the smooth rubber of the ball, it was so nice to have a new game like this to play, I couldn't wait to play again. It wasn't long before Kari caught up to me and gave me lots of loving pats and praise. Not long after I was in her car waiting to go play a different game, she said this time I would have lots of kids to play with instead of just a toy.
That day was a few days ago now, and I've been playing games kids all over everyday since then. This new job is so much fun it doesn't feel like work and today Kari and I are going to an elementary school to visit a 4th grade class. When we get there all of the kids are really excited to see me, they love to pet me and let me lick them all over, most of them haven't seen a tracker dog before. Kari starts her speech like she does everytime:
"So who's excited to meet a tracker dog today?" all the kids energetically raise their hands and couple it with many echoed "Me!"s
"Alright sounds like Puma has a lot of fans! Now, does anyone know what tracker dogs do for the police men?" and an adventurous young soul will usually supply an adequate answer, this goes on for a while and almost the same every time so Kari usually lets me chew on my red ball so I don't get bored. Then after Kari is done with her speech it's my turn to show off and we go outside to have some fun. Kari introduces the game in the same chirpy voice that she does her speech saying
"Who likes to play hide and seek?" followed by the chorus of "Me!"s again and then she'll say,
"Puma is really good at hide and seek, so why don't you all go hide and then we'll let him find you ok?" They all scamper off then finding what they think is the best hiding place. I ignore all of their scents and just keep chewing on my ball until Kari gives me the command,
"All right, Go play Puma!" and I'm off as fast as the children were. I focus on the scents from the classroom, the scents with traces of graphite and eraser shavings on them (and today a small amount of play dough, they were making sculptures before Kari and I came in) and I find them all pretty quickly. They all giggle when I find them and give me pats and then run after me as I chase down their classmates, their crisp laughter ringing all over the playground. When I have found each little warm body they all huddle around me again like they did when I first got there and soon I'm playing many games with them from tag to more rounds of hide and seek. It always seems too short, but soon Kari has to call an end to game time because I have a serious job that night. We'll go home for a bit before that night's work and Kari will tell me stories of her husband who is fighting in war at the moment and has his own tracker dog named Revo. This Revo girl sounds like a serious tracker, but I'll bet I could get her to play if I tried. Kari and I have a quick dinner, tonight it's hot dogs and my favorite, sweet potato fries (How could you not love those they're delicious!). After dinner its off to work, and off to track down a new friend, apparently I'm tracking down a lost fourth grader tonight, I wonder how he got lost?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~That Night~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(please note the tone changes here to show how Puma's mood changes between working and when playing with the kids at school)
The sounds of the forest are all around me, the young crickets chirping and the faint scent of dew was already forming on the leaves for the next morning. I know the boy is nearby, his warm scent hangs brightly in my vision, a ribbon connecting him to me, to being found. I press forward through the thick underbrush, never once allowing myself to stray from the boy's trail no matter how difficult it is to stay on his course. There, finally I see him. He is curled up, looking defeated and hopeless, but he peeks up at me as I come near and the sharp scent of salty tears reaches me. I do the only thing I know best, playing. I lick the boy's face with my long tongue and nip playfully at his clothes trying to get him to play tag. I know if I can get him to chase me I can lead him back to his parents, the forest was too thick for anyone to follow me as I tracked the boy. Come on! I kept thinking, willing him to get up and follow me. Suddenly, he says just one word:
"P.. Puma?" I thought carefully about if I had known this boy before then and realized that I visited this boy's class yesterday, he was one of the shy ones but he his well when it was time to play hide and seek. I licked his hand gently to let him know that it was me.
"Show me how to get home Puma, I... I want to go home" he broke down crying as he said that but he got up and followed me eagerly, knowing I could lead him where he wanted to go. Satisfied he was keeping up with me, I focused on Kari's scent and weaved my way back through the forest towards her, trying to find the clearest path for the boy and I to take. After what seemed like hours, I finally saw the edge of the forest and Kari's scent was glowing brighter and brighter every second. I bounded out of the forest, knowing the boy was close on my heels as we both ran towards our loved ones, I to Kari and he to his parents. There were many tears of joy and echoing "thank you"s and "we were so worried"s from the boys parents as they reunited with their son.
"You know, when that dog of yours visited Harry's class, Harry came home happier than he has been in ages" the boy's father was saying to Kari as his mother took Harry inside, he then whispered, "He's on medication for depression, we... we thought we would never see him happy again, but that dog of yours just lights something up inside him." The father then smiled, "He said he wants to be a policeman when he grows up, so he can have his own tracker dog one day"
"Until then I'm sure Puma wouldn't mind having Harry as a playmate would you Puma?" Said Kari, beaming down at me. Play? I thought, cocking my head to one side.
"I guess that's a yes then" Kari remarked, laughing and the father joined her,
"I guess so, why don't you go in and play with him now Puma? I'm sure he would love it." Harry's father didn't have to ask me twice, I barreled toward the house, snatching my red ball from the ground by Kari on the way and happily went to greet my new playmate.
It's short, but hopefully sweet X3Also... I made a headshot of him, I added the watermark because of the name I would give him, but if someone wants it as fanart if they get him I can take it off
