Meaning:
Hawk has had a very rough life, having lived as a pet in a home where he was often forgotten and left starving and thirsty or squeezed and hugged till his bones broke. He was never brought to the vet for his injuries, and eventually he fought back. He ended up injuring one of the children when they yanked his tail too hard, and was thrown out on the streets to live the life of a stray. One day, while injured, he was taken in with a pack of wolves, in which he has lived since. He still longs to go back to the city life that treated him so terribly and show them why they shouldn't have. This quote is how he lives, because even though he's had a very hard past, things will always get better, and someday, Hawk will glow brighter because of the beating he has taken.

what it means to them;
Ivy has always had a troublesome life, he was born in a viscet mill and barely knew his mother. He was taken away from her right after he was born to be sold at a pet store. He was sold to a family, and it seemed nice for the first few months. He got attention and love.... until he didn't grow any bigger anymore. He just stopped. The family then called him useless and threw him out onto the streets, there he had to fight for his life against cats, dogs, rats and anything you can name that was bigger than him. That's when he learned how to be street smart, using his small size to get out of trouble and to sneak into places with fresh food. He's using what he has to survive in the city, where anything at any time could harm him. He heard the motto one day from a couple of humans walking by where he had made his small temporary den. It stuck in his mind and he's been living by it ever since.

What it Means to Them:
No matter what happens in life, Sylar is determined to not let it get him down. Even if he gets thrown an insurmountable curve-ball, one that he just isn't able to get past easily, he will still continue onward and never give up. Adaptable, Sylar often changes to suit his environment. If he's needed to get into the water, he'll jump into the pool paws-first. If he's needed to find an object lost in the woods, he'll sniff around and won't care if his coat gets dirty in the process. Sylar doesn't care what has to be done - he will always continue moving forward and helping others. Even if he has to do something uncomfortable, Sylar will continue to trot forward, head held high, until the day he decides that having the purpose he has (to always strive to be helpful to everyone) is meaningless, in which case, he will find a new purpose. By staying stationary, nothing is changed and nothing gets done. Sylar realizes this, and thus has molded his life around the opposite idea: if one keeps moving, change will always occur, and something good is bound to happen at some point! Sylar is able to keep a positive attitude by living by the motto that he chooses for his life to revolve around. He will forever continue to put his faith in a greater good, one that hopefully he can somehow help to bring about for as many individuals as he possibly can.

what it means to them || to all appearances, chase is a sweet, lovable viscling who wants to be friends with everyone. while this isn't untrue, he is more than the naive little puppy he appears to be. he is much more canny and thoughtful than most give him credit for, and is consistently underestimated by those who don't know him (and even those who do). despite being constantly treated like an unruly child, chase loves befriending others and learning their stories. in return, he is loved by almost everyone who knows him.

it takes a lot to get on his bad side, as chase is generally very forgiving and upbeat. when chase reaches out to someone, he tends to extend a certain amount of trust to that person. though tentative at first, over time, these bonds can grow very deep. if one of these bonds is broken, however, it is almost impossible for him to regain the same sense of trust and confidence in that person. for chase, betrayal cuts deeply, and is borderline unforgivable. because of this, while chase has many friends, he has only a few that he trusts wholly.

chase found this line while reading through his copy of all's well that ends well and was immediately inspired. To chase, his motto is pretty straightforward.
