Writing Prompt Day Five:Dustin shivered in the light February snow. It was the night before Valentine's day and he should be home, snuggled up in bed with a fairy tale and getting some shut eye. Instead the little Kalon found himself sitting in front of an old abandoned factory in the side of town that most certainly wasn't going to be celebrating any day of love come next morning. He shivered again, this time not really from the cold, and glanced between the large wooden door before him and the photo he held in his paws. They were almost identical, same dull sunset red brick framing the same dark wooden door, both with an intricate heart carved in the very center- a series of swoops and flourishes framing an antique knocker. Someone had tagged the real door with bright neon pink and red spray painted intials, which is Dustin's unprofesional opinion didn't look very good. Otherwise they were exactly the same. This had to be the right place.
Which led Dustin to his next question; why was he here? The obvious answer being he had walked, following the directions enclosed in the musty envelope he had received along with the photo until he had found himself where he was now. Perhaps it had been a bad idea to venture to this part of the neighborhood alone, without even telling his parents where he was going, but what had he been supposed to do? The Kalon who had pressed the envelope to his chest had implored him in a desperate whisper to come alone that night, and who was he to refuse such an earnest request? Especially since she had given him toffee. It was very good toffee
"Uh, hello?" Dustin stepped under the eaves of the factory stoop and shook a thin layer of snow off his fur, it would be rude to track the outside inside after all. He lifted the knocker and let it fall once, loud and sudden. The door simply swung inwards and Dustin shivered again. Surely there were no such thing as Valentine's spirits right?
"Hello?' No one was answering his call so Dustin took a shaky breath and entered.
Immediately after taking a step inside the Kalon felt his body fill with warmth and his tense muscles relaxed. Surely no ghosts or other beasties would reside in such a well lit area? The factory stretched far past what his tired eyes could make out, but what he could see amazed him. Little eggshell doves swooped under a vaulted golden ceiling, garlands of what looked like folded origami hearts drooped like criss-crossing pink and red snakes, and boxes, oh so many boxes, were piled haphazardly in towers that stretched to the sky. It was all Dustin could do not to fall over in awe!
"Can I help you?"Out from behind a particularly large tower flew a light pink Kalon adorned with a big red bow.
Actually flew. With little white wings and everything. Dustin blinked and opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out. He wasn't dreaming this right? This was actually happening? Surely even he couldn't imagine something this wondrous! Finally the Kalon found his voice again.
"Actually, I think I'm the one who should be asking that?"The female Kalon giggled and clapped her paws together delighted, descending right in front of him and greeting him with a French cheek kiss. A stunned Dustin managed to return it without too much hassle, which excited the other Kalon even more. Dustin wondered if she had gotten enough sleep or if this amount of giggling was normal.
"So you must be Dustin! Thank goodness. I'm Amorette. I'm in charge of Valentine's day if you haven't noticed." She swept a proud paw at her set up before continuing,
"Unfortunately I've been a bit short staffed. The doves are nice but a bit bird-brained if you know what I mean." She giggled again and Dustin, who had finally gotten over his shock, laughed along with her.
"But what do you need me for? Why me?""Oh, your imagination of course. You see-"And with that simple statement Dustin's mind was rocketing through the possibilities.
Imagination? What could she possibly want with that? Maybe she needs me to create a new line of Valentines, globally themed! Maybe she has a sleigh like Santa's except hers is pulled by dove's like Aphrodite's and the doves eat imagination and she needs me to donate some! Or maybe she has a really dangerous journey to make to deliver a special letter and only those with the purest of-"-I need you to sort through all these letters by region and county."Wait what?Dustin's confusion and disappointment must have shone through on his face because Amorette just giggled again and patted his head rather patronizingly.
"Sorry Dustin, nothing exciting for you to do today. I needed you because no matter who you told about this no one would believe you. Gotta keep the trade secrets in the trade am I right"Oh well that made more sense. A bit disappointed and slightly hurt but still ready and willing to help Dustin nodded and let himself be led to the first box. It was chock full of letters and notes of every kind and language. Just looking at them made the Kalon feel a bit woozy. But he listened dutifully as Amorette explained the sorting system and demonstrated it to him before she headed off to attend to a few final duties. He picked the first card up gingerly and examined it. It was a
Gækkebrev by the looks of it so it went in the Nothern European Box for Germany. Simple enough. The next one was in a language he barely recognized and Japanese which he sorted into the Lower Asian Box. On and on he went, examining and sorting, and making up stories along with each card to pass the time. It was pretty fun actually even if his eyes were hurting with all the words.
Dustin had cleared the very last box in his row when the sun started to tingle the fur on his back. He let out a large yawn and stretched, examining his paws for a paper cut he could feel but couldn't see. He absolutely hated when that happened.
"All sorted?""Hmm?" A large yawn,
"Oh. Yeah."Amorette seemed to notice the drooping of the little Kalon's eyelids because she smiled softly and knelt down on the floor.
"Climb on." She patted a paw on her shoulders, indicating for Dustin to sit. He did so carefully, trying to arrange himself so he wasn't pinning her delicate wings in a awkward appreciation. His paws grasped her scruff for dear life as Amorette lifted off into the air and ascended through a skylight. Wind whistled past his ears as they flew and Dustin would swear he didn't breath the whole time they were sky-born. He could hear his heart pounding even when they landed in front of his house and he tumbled into the snow.Seconds later her popped back out.
"Again!""Ha, not this time kiddo. You're getting heavy, besides I have cards to deliver don't I?""Oh, right." Dustin grinned as Amorette rose back up and started back the way she came and continued waving frantically until she was just a pink speck in the sky and enough feeling had returned to his paws to tell him he was freezing. And tired. And hungry. But despite this uncomfort Dustin was bursting with happiness as he stumbled up the frozen steps to his house. He had just helped save Valentine's Day, what a story this would make! And it was a true on this time, he was sure of it! But what had Amoretter meant by
getting? Had he down this before? Nah. Dustin shook free the snow and the thought from his grey fur. He'd have remembered!
