Another Southern Resident has been found dead off the coast of British Columbia. This time it was an adult male known as J-34 Doublestuf. The Southern Residents are now down to just 79 members.

Orcas aren't usually on my radar as far as conservation is concerned-- mostly the critically imperiled species (like gulf of California porpoises) get the bulk of my focus, but reading about the Puget Sound/south orcas is extremely concerning. I'm not happy reading how badly off they are, not at all. If the populations I previously throught were doing okay are nose-diving this badly and nothing is being done, what hope is there for species even worse off?

I'm going to keep an eye and ear out for updates on the south orca populations; thanks for having that in your signature, I don't think I would've heard about it otherwise. I really hope things turn around for the best.

I love how passionate you are about these amazing animals, as they are often overlooked and some species are in need of dire help. Now i'm not a hardcore lover of cetaceans, but its great to see people that are.

Anyway, just stopping by, keep educating the world of CS!

Just got the news that Granny (J2) is considered to be deceased. She hasn't been spotted since Oct. 12. Hit me hard since my dad "adopted" her for me when I was little.

Such sad news circulating. I have been passing the news along to others and I hope we might be able to save these beautiful creatures before it is too late </3

In honor of the passing of J2 Granny, I whipped up this tribute for her.

Thank you. uvu I wish I could have seen her up close. She was the first Southern Resident I knew as an individual, and the first I could properly ID.

Man, I'd love to see orcas like that! ...In the wild, of course. Nothing beats watching a family swim together!
