you can add accessories and change the hairstyle of your kalon (dying it, styles, etc.) as long as you use the original reference for breeding them.

I really wouldn't go so far as dying the hair or making major changes. It's more for things like, putting long hair up in a ponytail or braid. Too many changes causes confusion.
