Welcome to my adopts post!
Yeah, I know it's not on the first page, but being the control freak I am, I had to use one of my own posts so I could edit it when I pleased.
These adopts are made exclusively for The Midnight Sun and will not be obtainable elsewhere. Mainly because I won't bother posting them anywhere else, lol.
So, what are Gemdogs? Take a look at the information below to find out!
Discovery: Gemdogs aren't canids at all, unlike their name suggests. They got the name by the first human that spotted them and discovered them as a new species. (Let's assume this is placed in another world rather than the one we know, hehe, but there are still many of our species there.) The man who spotted these creatures was a simple country side man, that had caught one by accident in one of his deer traps. Standing still, wings folded and far away, the creature resembled a skinny dog, but by closer inspection the man saw these incredible formations on top of the animal's head. He called them gemstones, and so he decided to call the creature a Gemdog.
Behaviour: Gemdogs are shy creatures towards humans, but they tolerate other animals. They are social beings towards their own kind and usually live in groups of up to 10 individuals. They are docile creatures, besides being carnivores, and they feed on small animals like mice and rabbits. They are also very inteligent animals. It's not hard to tame one, but they should be caught as young as possible, as they could die of stress if caught in their adulthood.
Physical Characteristics: Gemdogs resemble light built dogs body-wise, but have extremely long ears and snouts, making them look peculiar. Their tail is also long and very thin, ending in a feather fan. They have a pair of heavy feathered wings that looked trimmed at the end. Feathers also appear on the cheeks and elbows when the creatures are fully mature. Their bones are semi-hollow, giving them resistance on the ground but also being light enough to enable them to make short hovering flights. Gemdogs cannot fly/hover for long distances. The most intriguing feature of these creatures is the formation of colorful minerals on top of their heads, that seem to tint their feather tips the same color they show. No one knows what they are for. Their coats are always naturally colored. Their natural lifespan is of 8 years, but if tamed they can live up to 20 years.

Here are the 3 most important stages of growth in a Gemdog:
Newborn

Newborn Gemdogs are fragile and depend on their mothers to survive. They have heavily wrinkled skin and are usually very dark in color. Markings that can be seen are usually very faint. No bright accents can be seen at this point.
Puppy

Puppies already have more defined markings, as well as bright ones, and their wings are larger, but still have their initial feathers, that will be replaced later by the defenitive ones. One can see that the color of the gem determines the color of the bright markings on these animals. Their ears appear floppy at times, as this is the time their cartilage is forming. Calcium ingestion in this period is crucial, otherwise the ears will remain floppy in adulthood. Their tail feathers are not formed yet, however, a long mane-like hair tuft appears on the end of their tail. Some hunters usually cut young Gemdogs' tail tips in order to sell this as human hair, since it feels just like it. This does not affect the Gemdog greatly, but if it's a male pup, it's chance of mating will be reduced, since female's like feathery fans. The coat's color becomes lighter and 4 more gems form around the main one.
Adult

Pups going into adulthood suffer many physical changes, as it can be seen. Feathers grow on elbows and cheeks, snout and ears elongate, tail end becomes feathery (the previous hair falls off) and final feathers assume a squarish shape. Gems are now found scattered around the main one and the coat's color is final and much lighter than the previous stages. Gemdog markings on wings are always striped, and the body markings are usually striped, but not always. There aren't any differences between males and females of the species, besides the obvious.
