Prompt I am using: 'The scent of new growth fills your nostrils...'
Writing:
Sniffing lightly, I pulled a tissue out of the box I kept beside the kitchen sink. The world was filled with the scent of new growth, but with new growth comes allergies. With a groan, I look out the window across the field that was filling with blueberries as the spring warmed up. They would soon be ready to be picked, and I couldn't wait, already planning the delicious recipes I would make with the fresh fruit. Taking an apple out of the fruit basket, I sit down at the table, picking up today's newspaper. The top headline read:
"Unusual deer-like creature spotted just outside of town!"
Of course, this piqued my curiosity, and I skimmed through the article. Apparently, this creature was spotted in a garden attempting to eat an elderly lady's prized cucumbers. Animal control was unable to catch it, and a reward was offered for the troublesome creature. If it got caught, it would be moved to a nearby forest to live 'happily ever after'. Closing over the paper, I stood, dropping the apple core into the bin before wandering back over to the kitchen sink, grabbing another tissue. As I raised it to my face, something out in the field caught my eye. Was that a deer? Squinting out into the distance, I notice in horror that the deer was happily snacking on my blueberries!! Racing over to the back door, I pulled on my shoes frantically, bolting outside. Waving my arms as I raced, I shouted at the deer to get away, to leave my poor blueberries alone! It raised its head, gazing at me with beautiful eyes. "Go on, shoo!" I shout, only then noticing that this was no deer. The creature looked at me, chewing intently. I gawped at it, shocked. It wasn't afraid of me at all! Maybe this was the creature that they were talking about in the paper? As I watched it, shocked, the creature took a delicate step around me, before walking away. Looking down to the ground, I pondered what I had just seen, but then I realized. Looking up with a gasp, I was just in time to spot the creature's fluffy tail disappear... into my house!! With a small yelp, I raced back inside, shocked beyond words. It had its head in my fruit bowl, pulling it out and looking at me as if I had just walked into its house. It chewed on an orange, eyeing me up. And I just stared. What could I do? Stepping inside, I tried to chase it out, but it refused to move. Completely baffled, I sat down at the table. The headline caught my eye again, and my eyes found the number for animal control. Of course! I ran upstairs to my room, grabbing my phone. Darting back downstairs, I spotted the creature's form disappearing into the living room. Punching the numbers into my phone, I walked towards the door to the living room, checking to see what it was doing. The phone was dialing, and then the 'buu buu' ensured me that it was ringing. Peeking around the living room door, my arm fell to my side, the phone clutched lightly. The little creature had curled up in the dog bed that had been empty for a few weeks now. My old dog, Max, had passed away about three weeks ago, and my heart had broken. Seeing this little creature, tucked happily into the large dog bed, gazing up at me with huge, innocent eyes made my heartstrings pull, and I hung up the phone. Walking tentatively over to it, I knelt down, reaching out with a nervous hand. It nuzzled my outstretched palm, eyes half-closing in pleasure. I smiled, shifting my weight to sit cross legged beside the creature.
"What are you?" I ask, almost half-expecting the creature to answer me. She didn't, just blinking slowly. Smiling, I petted her shoulder, pondering what to do. Should I ring the authorities, and allow her to be brought to a forest, or should I keep her? She seemed to be so happy being inside... My mind drifted to thinking of names, and the name Moku popped into my head.
Of course, once I picked a name, I couldn't send her away.
