The clock struck the gong heavily, dread sinking to the pits of the watching kalons' stomaches. This can't be the end, not another one! The impending doom reached a peak as a lithe and arched figure made his way to the podium on the stage. The lights flickering eerily overhead to create a dull background glow.

THE TIME IS NOW!

The pale and thin kalon at the head of the crowd shouted, his clawed fist slamming across the hollowed wood of the podium, "You will bring her to me! The princess! Her time has come. You all knew it was coming. Why isn't she here?!", the gravel-laden voice rang through the room. Fear dripped from the furry bodies, ears emulating silence. An explosion of sound crashing through their flesh. The princess... she was leaving. They couldn't protect her anymore. They all thought they had more time. Maybe the murderous vigilante would've swooped in by now. She always killed the baddies.

SWOOSH!

A black-clad figure dropped from the rafters and catwalks. In front of the podium, facing the Clock Keeper.
"Aaaah, here's the little princess.", the crowd's sounds stopped altogether. "What?", was the question asked by a little girl in the crowd. "Well little girl, seems you didn't know. She's been lying to you all. The precious little princess is a killer. A vigilante!", the Clock Keeper pointed a clawed finger to the masked figure. "You think I'm a murderer, Calcifer? What about the souls you claim, where's the hat you pull the names from? Do you expect everyone to just accept this? I will not!", the mask moved as the angry maw opened beneath it. Hate spilling from the royal mouth. The Clock Keeper's resolve shattered when the princess uttered his true name. "You heathen! I am a respected and feared moderator of your society. Those that sin, those that deserve to die, die by my hand!", the princess chuckled thickly. She ripped the mask from her face to stare Calcifer in the eyes," Respect? I'm glad you think so. But you just described my job. I save my citizens, I give them a second chance. You snuff their fire like a light.

past -- when Nicandro was only a few months old, his fur started falling out.
his parents were not immediately concerned; it was unusual, but not completely unheard of for a still-growing Kalon to lose some baby fur as their adult coat grew in. however, when patchy little Nico neared his first birthday and still showed no signs of improvement, they decided to consult a physician.

the diagnosis was a fairly simple one, with minimal tests and needle pokes. "alopecia," the doctors said, "an incurable autoimmune disease." nothing life threatening, thank goodness, but the words incurable and disease are enough to scare any child. Nicandro still remembers crying the whole way home. try as they might, his parents could not convince him that everything was going to be okay, and the kit gradually grew withdrawn and fearful, convinced that his days were numbered.

personality -- though he has long since come to terms with the fact that he will never have a perfect, full fur coat, that sense of dread and impending doom has stuck with Nic throughout his life. he's absolutely terrified of the future and not having enough time to accomplish all the things he wants to do. after all, just because his condition isn't going to kill him doesn't mean that something else won't.

he's learned to mask his anxiety, thanks to years of schoolyard bullying and one particularly rebellious teenage phase, but it still manifests in other parts of his personality. perhaps the most obvious is Nicandro's total lack of patience. he despises waiting for any reason, and can almost always be found doing at least two or three things at once. even during his leisure time, he's constantly glancing at the clock, tracking the minutes and making himself a mental schedule. it's a nervous habit that he can't quite seem to break.

aside from rushing just about everything and everyone, Nic tries to seem as apathetic as possible. always being afraid, and embarrassed, and caring just a little bit too much got exhausting, so now he leans to the opposite side of the spectrum and he has all but closed himself off to the world. he started shaving his coat, in order to make it look like it's a choice rather than an ailment, and stopped showing anyone that he worried about anything at all. no one wants to make fun of you when they think that you can't be bothered to care.

in spite of the cold facade he puts up, Nico is still very soft at his core. some part of him might always be just a scared and lonely little kid, and he will often go out of his way to make time for other Kalons who seem a little different. he knows what it's like to be an outcast, and he'd never wish that upon someone else.

personality -- Xolani is a shy, trusting girl. Somewhat depressed by nature, this soft-spoken kalon is typically withdrawn from society and prefers to spend her days indoors, texting her few trusted friends instead of exploring the dangerous world. This is partly because of her low self-esteem and tone-deafness, and partly because of her fear of mosquitoes. (Most kalons have protective fur to keep them from being bitten, but not Xolani!) Still young at heart, somehow untouched by the harsh lessons of life, she has the unfortunate habit of depending on others too much. Whenever Xo is upset, she has a tendency of developing a blind faith in a specific kalon, no matter how toxic or cruel towards her that kalon may be. Oftentimes she ends up getting hurt from this, as she can have difficulty differentiating things like jokes and well-meaning gestures gone wrong from malicious behavior. Despite this ongoing pattern of vulnerability, broken trust, and betrayal, she prides herself on being forgiving.
