"I know the kits are almost ready to be squired, which will free up Cordy, but I think it might be time
to start considering promoting some other knights." Dustystep said, glancing around the court.
Peonystem nodded. "We've been able to manage quite well without her aid, but once she returns to
other duties it would be advisable to have more Thorn Knights to aid her. Not to mention to start
leading patrols whilst the two of us are busy, as we will be as the Court grows.
"Who are you proposing?" Promisedrose asked, nodding to Dustystep.
"Zwartkopshadow for certain," Dustystep said "she's one of the oldest members of the Court. I was
also considering Scallionsnarl, however he had that rough bout of illness, I'd like to gradually get
him back into normal duties before promoting him. Of the rest of the knights, Callashell does not
have the temperment for it, Antlerstrike and Tangletwist are far too new, and Zinnialea and
Shamrocktrail are far too young."
"I agree." Lotusseed said, tail flicking. "Scallionsnarl should be back to routine within another moon,
perhaps we can promote him after the sprouts' ceremony?"
"Agreed." Promisedrose nodded. "As for their mentors, I don't believe either has shown interest in
the spirits, beyond the normal of course, have they?"
Lotusseed shook her head. "No, and even if they had I don't know that either has the temperament for
it. Perhaps if they show interest after they've matured a bit...but I'd prefer to train a squire from
the start, not one that has begun training as a knight."
"It is nearly time for me to commune with Evos," Promisedrose started, glancing at the healer, who
quickly shook her head again. "I appreciate the offer Crown Rose," she said "but I can easily handle
the court as it is on my own for the time being. I would much prefer a courtborne for my apprentice,
I believe they will have a stronger connection to the spirits. One that will be certainly needed to
walk this path of mine."
"I defer to your judgement then" Promisedrose said. "I shall request another knight then, as two of ours
will soon be busy with training. Peonystem, do you have any recommendations for their mentors?"
The Lord of the Field hummed, tail swishing. "For Bumble, she will need someone to keep her grounded.
I would suggest Zwartkopshadow, however she only recently finished training Shamrocktrail, and will
need some time to adjust to her new duties, before we add a squire to the mix. Perhaps Antlerstrike?
He has a calm enough temperament and should be able to handle her...energy."
Dustystep nodded. "I agree, it will also be good experience for him. He's done well on patrols, but I
get the sense he hasn't lived with a group this big before."
Peonystem nodded, then turned back to Promisedrose. "As for Pollen, I don't want to suggest her own
mother, as kin should not train kin, despite their...lack of contact." It had hardly escaped the court's notice
that Callashell had done her best to vanish from the sprouts life over the past few moons. "And Zinnealea
and Shamrocktrail are far too young. Scallionsnarl I believe is in the same position as Zwartkopshadow,
and Cordylineblade was their guardian, she is closer to them than any kin."
"One of us could train them," Dustystep said, tilting his head. "However, from what I understand it would be
traditional for us to train our successors," he glanced at Promisedrose quickly, then let his gaze dart back to
Peonystem. "which would leave Tangletwist?"
Peonystem nodded. "She's a bit...younger to the Court than I would like, but it would be good experience for her."
"Then we are in agreement. Antlerstrike will train Bumble, and Tangletwist, Pollen."
Cordylineblade carefully ran her tongue over Bumble and Pollen's faces, cleaning them until their fur shone.
"Now then," she said, rubbing her paw at her muzzle. "Now that yer clean, lets start talkin about the spirits."
"We already know about the spirits!" Bumble huffed, tail puffed slightly as she bounced away from Cordy's grasp.
"But do you know about their paths?"
Bumble paused, looking up at Cordylineblade with curiousity.
"Each Spirit guards more than just an aspect of the world, they protect their ways of life. The walk of those that
follow Evos is different than those that follow Peria. Each spirit's path grants you certain boons, however, by
walking a path you also set yourself up to be targeted by their specific enemies. For example, I walk under the
guidance of Leos, the Preservation. It is my duty to care for and protect others, however, my forms of defense
are different than those that walk under Veran, the Defense. Leos preserve life, hope, and dreams. More
abstract forms of guardianship. While Veran is the physical defender, protecting from outside threats.
There is of course, overlap, however, each spirits path is distinct. And so too, are their foes. The Rot of Veran
comes in the form of physical beasts, who will attack you in the wilds. But the Rot of Leos is an inner crumbling,
an attack from within, corrupting your heart and cursing you with apathy."
The kits stared up at Cordy with wide eyes.
"As squires, you will begin to walk the path of a spirit, whether it is the same as your mentors or different, that
is entirely your decision to make. It depends on your values. But bewary, for there are spirits that draw so close
to the Rot that they align themselves with it. The Rot curses all others, it may tempt with promises of glory,
but swear to me that you will never walk its path. The Court exists to strengthen the other spirits, to show that
there is still good and hope in this world. Do not be its undoing."
The full moon shone overhead. It was a clear night, stars framing the moon as two cats sat in the center
of a garden, heads resting against one another.
"I make this vow to you, under sight of Denas and Leos," Dustystep spoke quietly, tail swooshing gently
across the ground, brushing against fallen leaves. "to love and protect you for as long as I shall live. This
I swear, that you shall be my only, for as long as we both walk the garden. I swear to walk alongside you
in the path of the spirits, for all eternity, may Evos make it so"
"And I to you do vow, under the watchful eyes of Denas and Xuen," Promisedrose responded, gentle smile on
her face, "to keep you dear to me for all our days, so long as I have breath will I protect you. I promise to
love and cherish all our days. I swear to stay at your side along our walk in the path of the spirits. For all
eternity, may Evos make it so."
The moon shone down on the couple as they closed their eyes, letting the night wash over them.
