Clan of Eternal SunPrompt:
Writing storageAdditionally, here's some worldbuilding in the form of an infodump;
The Clan of Eternal Sun is slightly unique in the fact that it works barely at all like a traditional Clan. The leader and deputy has next to no power, there's nearly no Clan loyalty, and as part of a cat's apprenticeship they have to desert their Clan for a minimum of five months. Additionally, taking mates outside of the Clan is an accepted fact of Clan society, and the medics are allowed both a mate and kits (though, of course, no cat is ever forced to take on a mate if they do not wish one). If the original Clans saw it, they would have a heart attack.
Also, while it ended up developing slightly similarly to a traditional Clan, with semi-traditional roles and naming style, the original founders didn't even know what a Clan was. (An apprentice from another, disbanded Clan had to come in and tell them how apprenticeships work. Before that, there were just kittens, younger cats, and adults) Because of this, they never learned of StarClan, and so the leader does not have nine lives. The deities that the Watchers communicate with are not their ancestors. Not that they know that.
Instead, the Clan of Eternal Sun worships the Sun (the guardian of all and the progenitor of cats), the Stars (the eternal, quiet sentinels that see all and say nothing), and the Elsewhere (the stretching expanse of fog between the worlds, where unwise cats can slip into if they're not careful, and where most cats go where they die). The desert is full of twisted, Unnatural things, but most native cats are very used to it, and newcomers either adapt, or.... become something Else as well.
The Clan of Eternal Sun is located in an area roughly similar to the Great Basin Desert, as it is a large strip of desert chaparral nestled between two large mountain ranges. To the north, if one were to walk long enough, one would encounter pine forests. To the south is a bigger, more sandy desert. To the east, past the mountains, is even more chaparral, and to the west past the mountains is the coast. The Clan is intimately aware of the greater area surrounding their territory, as many of their members (named Roamers) will often travel for weeks or months away from the Clan, bringing back news from other places, stories, traditions, trinkets, or other such things. Because of this, the Clan has a wide variety of different cultures, customs, and lifestyles all in one place.
Though desert cats are traditionally very isolated creatures, the Clan of Eternal Sun is very family-oriented. Kits are cared for by all the Denwardens in the Clan, the Clan often adopts fosterlings, and they almost never turn away a visitor. Though they maintain a streak of independence — apprentices will leave the Clan by themselves (usually to go swimming in the Milk Lake), scavengers will leave for days on end to hunt and gather supplies — they know that they will always have a home to return to.
Since their Clan is located in a clay-rich area, they have developed a rudimentary knowledge of clay pottery, using the occasional wildfires to bake their pieces. Because of the danger it takes to fire a piece, they are considered extremely valuable in Clan culture. Clay paint is used to mark out territory, and to communicate to other cats in the area. Additionally, in the (semi-far) future, a treaty with the crows allows them access to metal work and finer tools. They are very careful never to let themselves grow too similar to the humans, but they allow themselves to learn from their mistakes to become the very best that they can be. Generally, they make containers to hold water/dried herbs/prey, metal claws to protect themselves, and art.
The humans are gone. There are legends about them, especially in the Clans future. They all simply vanished one day, abandoning their housecats and leaving the Earth to stumble along on its own. But for some reason, this planet must have a sapient species. And the cats, crows, and dogs step up to fill the roles of their predecessors. The Event (as they've come to call it) sent ripples throughout the world, and for the first several years of the Clan of Eternal Sun's development, they felt it acutely. Warriors from Clans left shaken and disbanded, abandoned housecats, city strays, and more traveled to the desert seeking refuge. And the Clan of Eternal Sun took most of them in, offering shelter and company.
