Yup.
People are people.
She's not being mean, she's not being nice.
But she doesn't have a clue about the situation Zane is in, she thinks she's trying to protect him right now.
For all she knows, she's afraid of him being taken away if any of the adults find out about him. So she has to make sure he leaves as quickly as possible.
To him though, he's worried that he might be captured/killed, and would rather face being 'taken away by adults' than that.
So really its a lack of time and communication.
