Why would you like this character/What will you do for this character?:I absolutely adore pitbulls, but have never managed to draw one that I liked enough to keep as a character. This fella caught my eye a while back, and I was surprised even then that he hadn't been adopted yet. Seeing that he still hasn't been adopted just made me extremely intent on trying for him again. I love naturally colored characters, and Jase's tricoloration is just extraordinary, despite it's simplicity.
If I manage to win this handsome boy, he will reside in his own page(or bunker, as I like to refer to them as) on my character website. He won't ever just be left to collect dust, as he will be included in stories galore, and roleplays if permitted. I will quite happily draw art of this boy, as well as commission some from other players.
Personality:Finnicky-Jase has grown quite wary of other dogs, and humans, throughout his lifetime. He often tries to avoid strangers, in fear of being caught by surprise and winding up injured by them. If he is nearby someone he trusts, he'll probably stay close to them and observe the stranger from there. If he's with someone he cares about, he focuses more on keeping them safe from the potential danger than himself. He will stand protectively in front of them and watch the strange person or animal intently until he feels they aren't dangerous, or until they leave.
Gentle Giant-Jase is extremely affectionate to those that he is fond of. He will lovingly nuzzle them in greeting, his tail waving kindly. He is never rough or overly playful with others, as he is rather large and ever-aware of it. He is always very careful not to do anything that might accidentally harm his companion(s). He really is quite the gentle giant when among those he likes, and really, even those he doesn't. He just doesn't want anyone getting hurt because of him.
Laughs-Jase loves to tell jokes or funny stories when with his family or friends. He really enjoys having fun and making others laugh. The sounds of their gleeful chuckles and laughs just make him feel so joyful inside, so happy because they are happy. He would willingly give up his time, or really anything else, for his loved ones. It's worth all that's lost just to see them smile. He would do anything they wanted him to.
Easily Distracted-Jace is a very curious boy, and quite often that causes him to wander off, or become distracted by things that interest him. It takes patience to have a real conversation or anything of the sort with him, as he's likely to trail off in the middle of a sentence while watching something that catches his intrigue.
History: The first thing he saw was the blurred vision of a large, blue-grey head. After a few minutes of his newly opened eyes adjusting to the new sights, the small puppy was able to see clearer. Three other puppies were around him, crawling around and releasing short yips and whines. He turned away from them, nuzzling into the large warm body of his mother. He'd saught comfort from her from the moment he was born, before he could see and hear. It was all he knew. He and his siblings drank her milk hungrily, feeling the warmess fill their bellies. The young pup shut his eyes, drifting off to sleep.
Three Weeks Later
The little white, grey, and tan puppy had grown quite a lot in the past few weeks. He and his siblings were now rambunctious youngsters, bounding around on unsteady feet. Their mother had stopped allowing them to drink her milk, and would snap at them each time they tried. They soon learned it wasn't worth it to try. Their mother would leave them for a while everyday. "Stay here."she would tell them all, nuzzling them each gently, before turning to trot away from their little makeshift den behind an old building. The puppies would spent the first few minutes waiting simply playing with each other, but that always grew boring fast. They always grew impatient, waiting for mother. She would return with food. It was different everyday, sometimes old bread pieces, or some fruit. On rare occasions, some little bits of glorious meat. She was never able to carry more than a small amount at a time, so she often had to go back and forth multiple times to get enough to feed them all. They were always hungry, but she never found enough to fill their bellies. One day, she decided that they were old enough to come along. "Come quickly, and stay close to me."she warned them before they left. The pups were extremely excited to be able to go with her for once.
As they followed close behind her, sniffing the air with interest and gazing around as they walked, the little grey, white, and tan pup began to absentmindedly wander away from the group. Little by little, he became separated from his mother and siblings. When he finally realized that he has become distracted, he had no idea where his family had gone. Frantic whimpers escaped his mouth as he bounded around anxiously, searching desperately for them. But alas, he had gone too far from them, and they were entirely out of sight. After several minutes of searching, as well as diving out of the way of humans and large automobiles when he wandered into the streets, he finally gave up. He hung his head in defeat as he lie down sadly on a corner, sheltered from the hot sun by an area of shade. After walking for so long on the hot sidewalk, the pads of his feet were terribly sore and burnt, and the pup whined despite himself. He was awfully tired, and he lie weakly on the ground, eyeing all the passerbys warily, although he wasn't sure whether he had strength enough to flee if needed. He fell into a sleep, exhausted from walking so long and really just hoping that when he awoke, he'd be back with his family again. He was woken up by the sound fo strange noises, voices. He groggily opened his eyes, jumping out of fright at what he saw.
A small girl was bending down and peering at him, her pudgy little hands reaching towards him. "Puppy mommy! Puppy!"she squealed joyously, a bright smile on her face. The pup stared at her, wide eyed as he tried to tell whether she was a threat. A larger human approached, murmuring,"Oh, look how thin he is.." Before he could react, the pup felt hands wrap around him, and his body lift off the ground. He growled weakly, snapping halfheartedly at his capter. She simply stroked his back reassuringly, and the pup felt his eyelids grow heavy. He began feeling safer in the human's arms, comforted by her gentle strokes... He fell back asleep. When he awoke, he lie in a fluffy red bed. He shook his head groggily and looked around in confusion. Two bowls were nearby his bed, one filled with water and one with strange pellets. He sniffed them curiously. They smelled interesting, and he sure was hungry.. He caught one on his tongue and chewed it up. He sniffed the food again and took a few bites, his hunger suddenyl growing ravenous. He climbed out of the bed and began gobbling up the food. The woman came in the room and he glanced at her curiously, still eating. "Oh he's awake and eating. That's good." The woman seemed pleased, so the pup decided she wouldn't be dangerous to him anytime soon.
For the rest of the day, the pup sat with the girl and mother for quite a while, tipping his head in confusion at them as they said strange words at him. "Spike! Ronnie! Duke! Henry!" He had no idea what any of that meant. This went on for a quite a while before they seemed to give up, and stuck him out back, watching him for a while. He relieved himself and wandered around, ignoring the excited noises they made. This place was interesting...
Three Weeks Later
The pup had grown quite a lot in the past few weeks, and the humans had yet to succeed in naming him. So, he just learned to come whenever he heard a whistle, or a clap of their hands. He was quite large now, no longer the little pup he had been only a few weeks before. His handsome grey, white, and tan coat was more prominant now. And despite his owners' obvious love for him, whenever they took him out on walks, he saw obvious looks of anger or fear on other human's faces when they saw him. He'd wag his tail in greeting, yet they would simply project feelings of aggression back towards him. Each time, his humans would hug him and murmur in his ear,"You're not a bad boy, don't worry.." He was so confused. He never tried to do anything wrong. Why did humans hate him so? At least his family loved him, though.. He sighed, remembering his real family for the first time in quite a while. He wondered where they were..Had they found humans as well? On the way home, he continued to think about them, although he found it hard to remember much of them. His mind was filled to the brim of thoughts of his humans, and he had cat out most of the unpleasant memories of his past.
Life was going well for the young dog. At least, for a while. He sat up on his bed one afternoon when someone came to the door. He heard the woman and the stranger speaking to each other. "Pit bulls are dangerous to other animals and humans. He needs to be gone!" the stranger sounded angry, but his human sounded angrier. "He is not dangerous! You can't take him!" They argued for a while more, until the stranger finally left. The dog stood and nuzzled his human, trying to console her and calm her agitation. She smiled and stroked him, but said nothing.
The next day, they went for a car ride. The dog peered out the windows curiously, wondering where they would be going. He looked to his human for a clue, but saw nothing in her expression to signify a familiar site. So he sat patiently and waited. They finally reached their destination, quite a while later. This place was very unfamiliar to him, yet he obediantly allowed her to take his leash and lead him into the building. Inside, the woman spoke to another stranger, and the dog could sense sadness in her tone. He nuzzled her anxiously, wanting to console her and make her feel better. She avoided looking at him, and he stared at her in shock as she handed the man his leash. He strained against the leash as he began pulling it, whining at his past master. She glanced at him, deep sadness in her eyes as they filled with tears. "Go, boy.." She murmured through an obviously forced smile. The canine hesitated, then sadly turned away and followed the strange man through the halls and away from his human. Leaving didn't hurt him near as badly as the tears he saw rolling down her face. He would leave if that would make her happy.
He spent the next several days in a pen, surrounded by many other dogs in their own pens. He felt empty, no matter how much he ate. So much was missing without his humans. Although he hadn't even been given a name, he had adored them so much. They had given im a purpose. They had been his family, given him a home. Now, he was alone again. He'd been left behind, just like when he was a puppy. He had thought his humans would be his forever..now he didn't know what to believe..
Days went by, and the dog watched people come and leave. Some stopped to study him, to peer into his cage, to whistle or talk to him. He merely glanced up at them, but remained lying at the back of his pen until they left to view other dogs. None of the humans came to see him more than once, nor did they stay to wait for him to come to them. They just moved on. Most of the other dogs bounced up and down, barking and whining excitedly, dying for human contact, to be rubbed behind the ears and played with. Those were the dogs who were visited more than once, the ones who had a chance at going home with the humans. He on the other hand, didn't want to be lied to again. His human "family" had told him time and time again that they loved him, that they would protect him, that he would stay with him. Now look where he was.
After a few weeks, the dog had no more faith in humans. He'd eat the food when they brought it to him, go outside when they took him out to stretch his legs and relieve himself, but he refused to let his feelings distract him from the truth again. Humans were liars. One day, as he lie in his cage, his large head resting on his paws, he heard a woman's voice from the other room. This was nothing new to him. Just another human. He sighed and just remained where he was in his pen. A few moments later, a woman entered the room with a man he recognized as one who often fed him. He watched them as they passed down the row of cages. The woman paused in front of a few, asking the man about the dogs inside. When she reached his pen, she watched him longer than the others. "What's his name?"she asked the man, studying the dog with a soft smile on her face, her green eyes sweeping over him. the man shrugged. "He didn't have a name. We've just been calling him Jake, but he hasn't been responding to it. He's basically a lost cause, no use wasting your time with him. If this weren't a no-kill shelter, he wouldn't be here." he sighed and went on down the hall. But the woman didn't leave to view the other dogs. She continued to watch this one. He looked back at her, perplexed by her actions. This was the longest any of the humans had spent paying attention to him. He had to admit he was curious about her intentions. "Jake?"she murmured thoughtfully, watching as the dog simply watched her in response to the name. "Maybe you just don't like K's, hmm?" she chuckled and added with a smile,"I think S's are more your style, isn't that right Jase?" The canine tipped his head to the side curiously. The name "Jase" certainly was different, despite it's similarity to what he'd been called lately..Maybe this human was too..
