Adrenaline thrummed through Noa as she spun on one of her back paws, whirling around to raise her sword to block the blade that had been aimed at the back of her head. Just as they'd practiced, just as had been dictated. It was a delicate dance, making sure to hit their marks while making it look like the fight hadn't been carefully choreographed. Getting the upper hand before having her sword knocked free of her grasp and stumbling back to stare despairingly at the plastic blade now leveled at her chest.
Then the most important moment, the beat between her begging for her life and the betrayal, when her character would find herself run through. The moment when her gaze met the other actor's and she whispered a soft: "You promised." And then she'd hit the stage. The bracelet gently pulled from her tail and gazed at bitter sweetly by the hero.
Noa was practically vibrating, her blood still pumping during the curtain call. She didn't want it to be over, couldn't imagine what her days would be like now that their final show was done. Of course she'd come to learn that just meant it was on to the next one, off to find the next great adventure she'd get to show to audiences. It had long been tradition with this troupe that an actor got to keep a prop from their first ever show, and Noa had always known there was really only one option. The bracelet, the most important item for her character.
"We've done everything we can." The voice seemed a million miles away, Starlight didn't look at the speaker, unable to tear her gaze away from the patient. Their breaths were shallow and their coat dulled. Starlight slowly pressed a paw to their side. Their eyes opened, moving towards her but were unfocused.
"Smile." Their voice was a rasp, and tears sprung to Starlight's eyes. They moved slowly, carefully, removing the necklace that Starlight had long ago identified with them. "A frown ill-suits you. You did not fail." They held their paw out, the necklace draped over their wrist. Starlight slid her head through the loop, the weight of the necklace somehow heavier than she thought possible.
That moment was a turning point, the necklace a reminder of a lost friend, a reminder of what's at stake.
