How do they feel about their family?
Family is a fickle thing.
The notion that one's family is limited only by blood is ridiculous. That people are told that they cannot choose their family, and are stuck with whomever they share DNA with, is something he can only describe as stupid.
An absent father does not deserve the title of 'Dad'. You do not have to share a close bond with the grandparents you only see once or twice a year. Siblings are not born to get along without a hitch. Why should people settle on being dealt a bad hand? Why should people pretend to be content? Rifts can grow between people, families can break; and in those times, they are not the people who you have to turn to.
Blood is thicker than water. That's what people say. What they over use, what they spout to make themselves feel better, what they repeat without knowing that the quote itself is wrong.
The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.
The bonds you make by choice are stronger than the ones formed by blood.
This is what he believes in, what he knows to be true. In his heart, his friends are his family. You cannot form such close relationships with people without thinking of them as a brother or sister. They are the people who he confides him, and in return takes on their troubles. That's what family is about to him; providing mutual love and support between people, and encouraging each other to lead their best life.
It's about souls intertwining, about forming such strong bonds that they might as well be related because you cannot describe them as anything other than family. Choosing who you call family, in his eyes, is so much more significant because they are your choices to make - not something you have to settle with.
When your blood family can't provide the love and support you need, you go out and make your own. Simple as that.

Who are you trying out for? Camellia!
Username: SilhouetteStation
New Name: Camellia (keeping - really love this name!)
(Optional)Gender: Female
What, or who are they willing to lay their life down for?
Camellia's life has not been an easy road. She struggled in the past during her years as a foster child, and even as a young adult trying to make her way in the world, she still has trouble shaking the feeling of abandonment.
Her lisp, the little gap between her front teeth, her clumsiness; all little things used as fuel by others to knock back her confidence during her school years. Even she didn't know that behind her shy exterior, a loud and bubbly girl was waiting for the opportunity to be set free.
The chance came through a 'Help Wanted' sign in a newly opened cafe window. It was the towns first cat cafe, and although some people weren't too sure, Camellia jumped at the chance. Serving customers surely couldn't be that bad if you were surrounded by cats.
She half expected to get turned down, but to her nervous delight, she got a job position. Manning the register, taking food and drinks to seated customers - she could do that. With no experience. No previous jobs. Hmm.
But the owner was lovely, and was very patient in teaching her. There were a few mishaps of course, involving dropped biscuits and spilt milk which she was encouraged not to cry over. She reacted well to positive reinforcement, which the owner quickly picked up, and so they would always make a kind fuss whenever she did something well. Maybe it took a few weeks - or months - but Camellia's bubbly nature soon began to shine. She became rather good at customer service, if she did say so herself.
And the cats - oh, how wonderful those cats were! It was such a pleasure coming into work, knowing she would be greeted with mews and purrs galore. She'd never been able to have a pet before, and now it was like co-parenting ten at once. Their presence really did help to create a positive work environment, and of course break times were a blast when you got to hang out with all these furry friends.
More than that, Camellia felt so good knowing she was helping them. All shelter cats, all with their own stories, all wanting a loving home; something she could more than relate to.
Whenever a cat would be adopted, it was a bittersweet moment. She would always feel a twinge of sadness, but also an overwhelming sense of happiness knowing that they were going to a loving forever home. And then a new cat would enter the cafe, and she would do her best to make them feel welcome.
As time went on, her love for the cafe grew. It was a feeling that, for a long time, she couldn't describe. It was waking up in the morning feeling happy, humming as she got ready to go to work. Walking inside, feeling the warmth from the oven, smelling the freshly made cakes. Greeting the staff, greeting the cats. Letting her good mood shine outwards when serving customers, who in turn gave her a smile at the friendly interaction.
She loved them, she realized one day.
She loved this job.
She loved this cafe.
She loved her workmates.
She loved the cats.
She loved her life.
She would do anything for this place, these people. Because, she realized, she loved them.
Maybe it had taken a long time, but she finally found a place she felt at home; she'd finally found a family to call her own.
