Show Name: Sun's Mountaintop Rays
Barn Name: Solstråle
Halter: Gentle Sea Green with a similar, minor marbling if that's ok
Prompt: Within the forest, a young mare guided her foal through the forest's thick foliage, diving forward to catch him as he tripped over a thick root he hadn't seen and she had missed.
He gave her an apologetic look, stumbling back to his feet with his ears twitching unsurely.
"No worries, darling." She gave him a reassuring nudge, gently pushing his side to urge him on as she nervously approached the clearing and moved forward to place an ancient bone carved with gentle runes into the clearing. Fireflies stirred from around her feet, and she returned to help her young colt forward.
"Come on, little one... They'll help you.. I promise." Her voice quivered as she assured herself. Having never met a Vun-Toj herself, she could only hope a benevolent one would take pity on her gentle foal.
His ears twitched forward, then back again, trembling with nervous energy as the ground vibrated beneath their feet. It was subtle but seemed to only be where they were since the mare could see no animals nearby fleeing.
Then, the trunk of one of the trees seemed to move and part, revealing in the interior a small Vun-Toj. Never underestimating their size, the mare bowed briefly to the being in respect, coaxing her colt to do the same. As the little colt was, he trusted his mother, obeying as his eyes flickered up towards the new presence in awe and wonder.
"You bring me a deaf colt." Lavender eyes gently accented by glowing markings swirling down her cheeks examined him carefully, her voice a humming on the wind. The fireflies danced around her as she stepped closer and made a circle around the colt, and he watched her nervously.
"This is Solstråle.." The mare murmured, nuzzling him to offer a little comfort, and the colt pressed into her side nervously.
"Ah. Well, Solstråle... I can offer him a new way of hearing the world around him if you wish."
The mare perked up, "R-really?"
"It will be taxing however, but he will have a sense of sound." She confirmed, turning around, she trotted back the way she came to a smaller tree, which parted its trunk to reveal a small kitten with eyes as brightly blue as Solstråle's were. Gingerly, she picked up the small kitten and set it at the colt's side. "She will remain by his side and be his ears. Quite literally, if he ever decides to."
"What do you- Ow!" Solstråle flinched, shaking his ears as magic swirled into them leaving very subtle swirling markings on the cartilage that faded into his fur. The little kitten squeaked, receiving a similar experience and rubbing her little paws against her ears. Picking up the kitten, she was set between Solstråle's shoulders, clinging there with little claws he didn't really feel more than a prickle.
"There we are." The spirit snorted in amusement, "Now, I must be going."
"W-Wait! How does he-" The mare tried to ask, but the vun-toj had vanished, and the clearing had no evidence that the encounter had even happened except for the lone kitten that clung to Solstråle's back quivering and the bone whose runes faded into just carvings on its surface.
They both peered art her with wide eyes, and she gave a nervous whicker. Oh dear. Had she really summoned a good spirit..?
It took years before they figured out what she had meant. As the pair grew older, Solstråle would notice interesting instances when his hearing would suddenly flicker to life before cutting off again, like an old radio. They soon were able to link it to young Raven's hearing. The little she-cat would strain to hear something and the magic would allow her sense to be heightened, and also allow Solstråle to hear what she could! It was, however, tiring for both of them, and limited to only what Raven could hear, so she stayed mostly by his side, helping him listen to cool things they'd find while exploring or going on adventures. Most of the time, Solstråle learned to communicate with just gestures, which wasn't too hard, but he preferred his solitude with Raven by his side.
(Sorry! There was going to be more to this but it got busy, so I couldn't do the drawings I wanted to. : ( )
