Manticore: A mythical beast typically depicted as having the body of a lion, the face of a man, and the sting of a scorpion.

I did do away with the human face thing because I felt it a little too out of place, and preferred to go for a more modern depiction.


In order to adopt this lion you must have a founder and be level one, or Adopt this one as your founder!

Chaimek sat quietly at the entrance to the tunnel. Spread out in front of him was the world of mortals, covered in sunshine and green and he watched as a lioness appeared, crossing the field and stopping before him.
“What is it mother?” Chaimek had no love for mortal, but his mother was the one exception and she had sent him a message saying she needed his help.
“It’s your sister, Morana. They’ve cast her out. There’s so much destruction and pain.” The lioness’s voice faltered a little.
“What do you mean mother?”
“Her powers, Chaimek, she isn’t a Life Giver.”
At that Chiamek was silent, stunned for a moment. When they were born, half mortal half monster, he and his sister had been told they might be Life Givers or Lords of Death. The first gave life and healed others. The latter had power over death and guided the souls of those who had passed. Morana had looked like their mortal mother, so their tribe had treated her well, confident she’d be a Life Giver and proud to be honored by raising a Life Giver among them.
But Chaimek with his monstrous appearance had repulsed them all, and after seasons of them treating him cruelly they had finally sent him away, saying he could never be a Life Giver, only a Lord of Death. So he’d lived with his father for seasons in the Realm of Monsters, hiding from the scorn and rejection of mortals.
“Chaimek, I know they hurt you. I know you fear facing them. But whether they like it or not they need you now. And so does Morana.”

Only the mention of his sister made Chaimek falter. Though he hadn’t seen her in years, he loved her no less. And she had always loved him, in spite of his appearance.
“Very well mother, I’ll go.”

Chaimek set off into the mortal world that day, doing his best to put his fear behind him. It was several sunrises before he found his sister, hiding away.
She was frightened. Broken. Nothing like the cheerful lioness he remembered. Chaimek stayed with her, trying his best to reach her and remind her of who she was and that she was loved.
Finally he convinced her to go back to the tribe with him. His fear nearly stopped him, but his love for his sister drove him to keep going and every day he went over what he’d do and say when he finally faced them again.
When they reached the tribe he reprimanded them for their treatment of his sister, reminding them that life and death had to work together to bring balance.
“Though you’ve mistreated us both, we will come back and bring balance. But you must accept us both.”
Grudgingly, knowing they had no other choice, the tribe accepted them both. Chaimek as the Life Giver and Marona as the Lord of Death.
And that day Chaimek conquered his fear in facing those who had mistreated him.

"Shamsi..." Nur coughed hard enough to make her body tremble. The manticore gently
nuzzled her with his horned head. His mate had been sick for several months and was
progressively getting worse. The healer in the pride did what they could but the
unfortunate truth was there wasn't a cure for Nur. It was determined she had heart
failure. "I'm not... I don't want to die..."

"Hush, my love. It will be all right."

With a soft huff, she gently shook her head. "How...can you be...so sure?"

His forked tongue gently licked her cheek causing her to look up at him, a sweet smile on his lips. "Because there's more to life than the years you spend alive. Think of all the lives you've touched. The deeds you've done. You are the most selfless lion I've ever met. I mean," he started with a chuckle, "I'd probably still be wandering alone and scorned if it wasn't for your
compassionate heart. You were the first person to see past my looks and see the real me."

Nur smiled back weakly, her eyes growing heavy with fatigue. Shamsi's heart felt heavy knowing his mate didn't have much longer. It was that exact reason he wanted her to see what he saw in her. The way she saw more in him. The frail lioness rested her head down on her paws and he lay his head gently over her shoulder to cuddle close to her.

"Maybe...maybe you're right, Sha..." Nur's soft voice caught his attention. "I couldn't ask for a better life."

He smiled and curled closer around her. "Nor could I."

Shamsi stood gazing at the bouquet of flowers resting on the dirt mound with newly sprouting grass. Every day for the past fourteen days he had been coming here with more flowers to leave. His voice was soft, but he spoke with a smile.

"Daffodils, for the sun is always shining when I'm with you. Tea roses to remember you always. Yellow tulips to represent the sunshine that was your smile. Nasturtium for your conquest over your fears. And for mine." He paused and looked up at the sky, his smile wavering slightly. "I know I told you things would be alright. And they are. It was rough that first couple of days without you. I was a mess..." He recalled, after burying his one and only, leaving the pride in a state of depression. He considered using his own poison to end his life to be with her. But he couldn't because he had to live; for her. "But I remembered those words I said to you. There's more to life than the years you spend alive. I want to be the warmth in others' lives as you were in mine."

The large feline hybrid lay down beside the mound, his smile never wavering. "You may be gone from this world Nur, but you'll never be gone from my heart."
