first off i want to thank you all for another great year in kalons! i'm so grateful for the fun times i've had with this community, and the kindness you all have shown to me (despite how inactive i am lol)

my staff kalon this year is based on a honey & cardamom iced latte that was featured in a coffee shop near my house during the summer! to enter for this kalon, design and draw a unique beverage for them to sip on! the drawing must be done by you - extras are allowed, so feel free to tell more about your drink!

little notes:
- while most of mal's family/childhood were "traditional" (raised on a farm, doing things the "hard way", hard work = success, his parents actually take on a non-traditional role, where both mother and father were his caretakes and both did physical work on the farm. out of the two, his father is typically the one that leaves Mal little encouraging notes, but is sometimes afraid to admit it, as he doesn't want his son to think he's weird.
- despite being on a bee farm, mal is actually allergic to bee stings. he won't die from it, but if he's ever stung, the flesh around the sting swells up and the poor Mal ends up looking a bit puffy
- Mal is not affected by caffeine, which is caused by his ADHD that he currently does not know about yet.
- he consumes roughly 1 gallon of tea a day

kalon personality:
While his stature and size can be a bit much at first, especially to those that are smaller, they'll quickly realize that he's actually quite the timid 'big bear'. He's very careful with both his words and actions, trying his best to ensure that his thoughts and feelings get across in the most gentle way possible, but also to make those around him feel comfortable and loved. Even though his words and tone may be soft, he is quite firm in his beliefs and his loyalty to friends and family, even if that is just a small group of people.

extra personality:
The difference between Mal's external and internal personalities is where his biggest differences are. While on the outside, he appears to be a simple, quiet man with a love for sweets and the arts, he actually has a lot more going on inside than he seems to let on. He doesn't typically get into any deep conversations with those he isn't close with, as he's a bit afraid of showing others his true feelings, both out of a fear of rejection and being a disappointment. It's not that his childhood or parents raised him in a way where he was punished for being himself, but rather that he set a higher expectation for himself than what he realized. Mal assumes that because his parents and family come from a line of tradition and patterns, that deviating from it will cause trouble and disappointment, when in reality, his parents wish for him to figure out who he is, regardless of if it follows tradition or not. Over time, Mal will eventually come to terms with that and realize that no matter what those around him believe or feel, what matters most is how he feels and that he needs to be true to himself. Because of this struggle, Mal has a lot of thinking going on inside his head over many of his decisions and experiences and can spend a lot of time lost in thought or contemplating various things.

background:
Despite appearances, with Mal being a whopping 6ft 4in, with broad shoulders and thick arms, Malus actually comes from a family of fairly small and slender men, with a few stockier types sprinkled in. No one really knows where he gets his unique frame, but they love him nonetheless. At the moment, he works at his family's owned and run bee farm, where they provide the nearby towns with fresh honey and other products; this isn't his lifelong passion, however, and he aims to find his own life's calling out in the world someday. While his family had hopes that he would stay and take over the farm, they understood that the passion wasn't for everyone, and supports him and his studies to eventually attend a good school where he can chase his dreams. Until then, they cheer him on as he studies and prepares for the entrance exams, knowing full well that he shall succeed, as long as he puts his full effort into it.

However, as much as Mal appreciates their support, he feels a bit of pressure from his family, one that was raised on hard work leading to success, as he believes that sometimes hard work isn't always the answer. Even though he studies and tries his best for the test, he knows that there is a chance that he may not pass, and only hopes that it won't crush his family more than it will crush him. Tests were never a strong skill in the family blood, and most definitely not present in his. At least for now, he continues to try his best, and enjoy the time he has at home.

During his free time, he takes trips to the local town, to sit in their cafe and study for the exam, enjoying the quiet chatter of other customers nearby, reminding him of the sweet calming sound of buzzing bees of home, but without the overbearingness that his family can sometimes bring. There, he typically enjoys a bagel and some form of tea, but typically his go-to is lemon black tea with honey-- a lot of honey. While the lemon taste is rather light, he enjoys the sweetness the honey brings, and it's even better that he knows the honey the cafe uses is straight from his home. To him, the cafe feels just like a home away from home.

When he's not at the cafe studying, he can usually be found at home on the farm doing housework or relaxing outside on the porch with honey lemonade and a good, sappy romance novel.
