literature/drawing:Loki had just hit the mark of his first year on the Earth, and to celebrate, he was being taken to the Winter Festival for the very first time. He had heard stories about other Senegal Hounds around Huckleberry Acres who travelled to this great event. To sum everything up, Loki was extremely excited that it was now his turn to make the journey with some of the greatest Hounds that resided at the Huckleberry Kennels.
Loki and the others arrived in the morning, and most of the Senegal's rushed to aid their handler in unpacking and setting up. All except for Loki, that is. He felt out of place, not yet used to the routines the older Senegal's were used to as a result of coming to the Festival for the past few years. They all worked in unison. Their pawsteps careful, making sure not to get in each other's way. It was like they all knew each other's next move, yet, Loki had no idea how. So Loki sat there, observing, but having no idea how they all worked together in perfect harmony.
After everything was set up for their stay, the handler called all of the Senegal Hounds from Huckleberry Kennels over to her, planning to ready them for their training for the sled race that they would be competing in in the next few days. Each and every Senegal Hound, including Loki, were excited beyond belief to begin their training sessions. The handler assigned one of the Senegal's from Huckleberry Acres that had been attending the Winter Festival for a few years now to lead the training sessions that didn't require her to take part in.
Every training session, the group of Senegal Hounds had to stop for one reason and one reason only: Loki. He fell behind easily during the training sessions. And during practice races, they had to stop pulling the sled because he had no idea how to work in sync with the other Senegal Hounds. So one night, he was approached by one of his teammates, who sat beside him.
"Loki, you show a lot of potential here. Otherwise our handler wouldn't have brought you to the Winter Festival. If she didn't think you could do this, she would have left you home and brought another Hound to take your place." He paused waiting for Loki to show any sign to him that he heard. When he heard a small sigh from Loki, the Senegal continued. "We all believe in you Loki. And you not giving up, even after being behind, it shows your potential to do great here. Your problem is that you lack teamwork, unlike us. We all know our place, and because you're new, you don't yet know yours."
Loki looked up at the other Senegal, finally not afraid to make eye contact with him. "All you need to do is watch your peers. Watch their movements and body language. We all learned to work together by watching each other and learning off of each other. It may seem hard at first, but in the end, Loki, you'll get it." The Senegal stood up and nodded his head to Loki. "We'll see you tomorrow bright and early for more training. Get some rest, and sleep on what I said."
That's exactly what Loki did. He thought about what his teammate said to him that night and what he meant by it. And the next morning, he was sure that he knew what it meant. Before, he was trying to guess the moves his teammates would do next, using his brain instead of his eyes and his heart.
Training went better for Loki and the team over the next few days, and then, came the race. The outcome wasn't a first place ribbon, but instead, a third. None of them had expected to place so high in the race with Loki being so new to the team, but he did well his first time. And they all knew by next year, Loki would only improve in his position.
That first year, Loki learned an important lesson for the Winter Festival. That lesson was teamwork.
