Story: (Anansi the Spider)
"Once upon a time, there was a spider who had six sons." Curled up at the side of his own father, a young pup named Mhubiri lay listening, his floppy ears only just starting to grow tall, his eyes on his father's face as his siblings lay sleeping around them, gentle snores filling the air. The light of the fire that their owners had made to set up camp cast long shadows but it was warm and made Mhubiri sleepy-eyed. But he waited patiently for his father to continue his favorite tale.
"The first son was named Trouble Seer whose gaze could see trouble from near to far. The second, Road Builder, who could make a road out of anything he had. The third was River drinker," he paused to yawn and young Mhubiri giggled as he answered for him with ease.
"Who could drink whole rivers dry without a single drop left." His father smiled and nosed his cheek and he sleepily mouthed at his muzzle softly. The crackle of the first warmed his coat and somewhere his mother was watching over the camp as her family got ready for bed. "Mmhm. Then there was-" "Animal skinner." "And what did he do, Mhubiri?" "He could skin anything. And then there was Rock Thrower. Who threw rocks." He stopped to yawn and his father continued on.
"And finally, there was Ground Pillow, who could make the ground he lay on, soft, soft, soft." He whispered the last part causing his son to laugh softly as he too laid low to the ground, paws splaying out. The sounds of the night reached his ears, but under the care of his family, the danger was no more than that. A noise.
"One day, the father went out to travel. But as time grew on, his sons grew worried. The sons turned to Trouble Seer shouting 'Where is he? Where is he? Is he in trouble?' And Trouble Seer looked far and wide across the horizons before crying out 'Yes! He's fallen into a river! In the jungle!' Hearing this the brothers ran as fast as they could to go save their father." Mhubriri's tail wagged softly. "The second son, Road Builder made a road through the jungle and the brothers all followed until they came to a raging river. The third son, River Drinker, drank and drank and drank the raging river until all that was left of it was a huge fish and their father's cries came from inside."
The call of a night bird took their attention for a moment and he felt his father grow alert once more, but from a signal of some kind from his mother who patrolled the camp, there was no danger. His father relaxed again though Mhubriri took note of his ears and tried to imitate them himself but his own were too floppy. His father chuckled at him and glanced at his siblings before continuing on.
"Then came animal skinner who cut the fish open to save their poor father. But up above, an eagle lay in wait, having circled around and when freed him, the eagle swooped down took him into his talons before trying to fly away. But Rock Thrower would not let him, as he tossed a rock so hard it hit the eagle and made him drop their father. But he was falling from such a great height, he would be hurt if not for Ground Pillow who lay underneath and made ground, soft, soft, soft. When he landed, Anansi was not hurt." Mhubriri hummed softly, slowly falling asleep now that his favorite part of the story had come. But distantly his father continued though sleep soon enveloped the young pup. "And so they saved their father. But Anansi wondered how to reward his six sons. So he traveled and found the moon..."--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The memory played like a forgotten melody in Mhubiri's mind as he awakened to find he was not by his father's side in the pitch black of the night while his mother patrolled and his siblings were not around him. Instead, the sun was rising from the savannah and he could hear the braying of the Senegal zebras as they were getting ready to move. Distantly, he wondered of his family now, but Mhubiri could not let memory cloud him here. He had Zebra to guard.
