“My thought on spiders? A rather strange question,” the lion admitted with a smile. “Very well. I will entertain the inquiry.” The large male took a moment to consider his answer. He’d often been told his coat looked like a spiders web but had never been asked how he felt about the creatures. “I wouldn’t say I’m fond of them, but they have their uses. That’s not to say they’re unpleasant, I just don’t feel more one way than another. Their webs can be bothersome at times.” With a chuckle Imamu added, “Have you ever stepped in a baboon spiders web? They’ll never forgive you for it. And it mats the fur.”
He shook his mane with a hearty laugh recalling the first time he had stepped on one of the burrowing tarantula dens. The glare the spider gave him. It was a miracle it hadn’t collapsed completely under his weight but the silk strands had stuck to his soft pads. With a soft sigh, he continued. “Some of the other spiders that keep their webs off the ground and out of paws way are less of a nuisance... We’ll, not really. If they’re spun low enough, it’s easy to have it caught up in your mane. Or run into it.” He shivered as if he had just done so, the uneasy feeling of a lingering strand somewhere on his pelt.
“It’s not all bad. They catch a lot of more annoying pests which can really help the rest of us out. We don’t have the time to chase down pesky insects. Wasted energy on a foe you can’t even eat. But the spiders take care of that. Mostly. Sometimes. The larger ones can eat lizards or mice or small birds. Not often, but still possible. As long as they date their appetites somehow. I’d hate to see one turn on me. Could you imagine? A spider that could eat a lion?” He chuckled. The chuckle soon faded as his face blanked, picturing a slider large enough to eat a lion. Imamu shuddered but quickly regained composure with a smile. “I suppose that’s more than you wanted to know. I have a neutral stance towards spiders.”



i’m so sorry to whoever has to recreate this lion’s design in the future....

Akela has a sort of... respect for spiders. In fact, when hunting he mimics the spider. A careful trap is placed and he waits....

Akela had one lame leg that he was born with but from a young age he wanted to be a hunter. His mom tried to explain why that wouldn’t be possible but he didn’t listen, he kept dreaming. One day while the other cubs were running around (they tried to play with him but unfortunately he couldn’t participate in the more physical games) he watched a spider. He was amazed that no brute strength was used for it to capture its prey.

From then on he watched and observed. Obviously he make a web though so that was an obstacle. One day While closely watching the spider (that he had named Kalea) he realized something. The key was the stickiness of the web!

He planned it out, every now and then after a storm he had watched a young zebra or antelope get stuck in the newly formed mud.

So Akela experimented and perfected his hunting, till he had it, the perfect quicksand trap. From then on he was dubbed spider as he would set his trap and watch, his lame leg not hindering his abilities any longer.

"Sarasa," The huntress scolded, "That injury needs to be patched, please go to see Caaro." With the stern words, the founder winced, his heart beginning to thunder in his chest.
"But... The spiders..."

Being a healer, one of Caaro's most important supplies is a spider's web, vital for patching wounds and keeping poultices in place. However, they can be difficult to find when scavenging, so Caaro has developed a better solution. He has made his den within the darkest corner of the caves, tucked back behind a few empty dens. And, within the high corners of his den, with their beady eyes and long legs, sit his four spiders, each with their own name and web type. In moments of quiet, when he is sorting his stores or figuring something out, he can be heard speaking with them, quieting them when collecting their webs or posing them questions in order to think them through himself. And, despite most of the pride not minding his four little companions, he has noticed that some of the pride are less likely to approach his den for aid. And he can rarely get Djall out of it, the large guard fascinated by the little creatures.
His spiders are not his pets, per se, but he has found himself bringing small treats back to his den for them, almost like a thanks for helping him!

Prompt: Mtandao isn't particularly fond of most spiders. They have way too many legs, and they just creep him out. However, he doesn't mind tarantulas, or the golden orb weavers from his old territory. He enjoys making his bedding with spider silk, so he always keeps a couple tarantulas in his mane. Otherwise, the webs are really annoying. He uses their silk to make traps around the territory, and checks them daily. He loves his little mane spiders, and names all of them.

Araneo is the pride weaver, so he works closely with spiders every day. He oversees them and supervises the making of clothing pieces and decorations and cloths of different kinds that are made from the spider's silk.
It is a long task that yields little results really. Just making a simple braided tassel can take hours of work. But Araneo is patient. And in the end proud of the results of his labor, though he doesn't forget to give the spiders their credit where it is due.

The difficulty of his job, and the hours it requires, do mean he spends a lot of time alone so he has come to think of the spiders almost as friends of a kind.
If you approach him without warning him you might catch him talking to them like he would another lion.

The spiders are used to him so get along with him better than anyone. If anyone else enters their hut they don't take kindly to it and can become aggressive, and even protective. The hut is a sanctuary of sorts to them, and to Araneo. He doesn't appreciate lions nosing around so is glad that his spiders tend to scare most lions away unless they come on business.

Though he might not admit it to just anyone Araneo also names some of his favorite spiders. One of them, a female called Sothy, has been with him some time and he is especially attached to her.

this entire interaction was honestly so adorable— he has a sort of cute indecisiveness about spiders; he respects them because of how useful they are to keep pesky, inedible prey away but is also afraid of the thought of angering them and stepping in their itchy webs. i could picture this being a cool characteristic to develop— especially given his role as the ruling king (or whatever position you’re aiming for him to be)
