How They Became Friends

Buceros laid down, the jungle leaves giving him shade from the unforgiving sun. Above him, he could hear the chirps of the many tropical birds the jungle inhabited. He remembered a distant memory from when he was a cub, he had caught a pretty bird and he was planning for it to be his next meal. How proud his mother would be! He had pinned it by its wings, and his mother found him with a frown. "No, no Buceros." she told him gently, removing him as she grabbed the bird and placed it down gently. The bird's wings didn't seem to work, and Buceros held his head down low, ashamed. "He will be fine, little one." she told him, "Bird's are beautiful creatures," she told him, "you mustn't eat them or hurt them." Her voice, while scolding, was gentle as she licked the bird. "They see everything, more than we ever will. They can fly up to the clouds and look down on us. They are the god's messengers."

Buceros had taken his mother's lectures seriously, all of them. The memory of her brought pain to his heart. Suddenly, it was the squawking that alerted him, he snapped out of his thoughts and raced to the noise. In front of him, a weird looking bird, trapped by an animal he didn't seem to recognize. He roared loudly, the animal scrambling away. The bird wanted to as well, it seemed, but it couldn't move. His mind flashed to the tiny bird he had caught as a cub, he will be fine. "It's alright, I won't hurt you." he told the bird, as if it could understand him. The bird, surprisingly, caught on and clambered onto his extended paw, situating himself on his shoulders.

It had been a few days, but finally the bird seemed to heal fully. He had stayed in the jungle to ensure he would be able to return to his home. The bird hopped off and hopped around with its wings. Buceros laughed, and nudged the bird as he began to head off. The bird let out a loud squawk, flying onto a nearby tree. He shook his head and was on his way. It was peaceful until he heard the bird's squawks again. What was going on? The bird dove down to his shoulders, as he tilted his head to the left. He frowned and began forward, the bird flying off of his shoulders and flying at him, causing him to move back as the ground in front of him collapsed and folded down.

The lion gaped, inhaling sharply. "Well, little buddy. Aren't you clever?" The bird nodded its head and he laughed, casting a look at the sunken ground before he chose the way the bird had told him to previously go. Shortly, the bird settled down on his shoulders, barking loudly. "You don't trust me by myself?" he mused to the bird, the bird nodding its head rapidly. Buceros laughed and headed on. "Guess I'm not getting rid of you anytime soon."

How They Became Friends

In Isamu's pride certain birds were always considered close to sacred. They were said to be beautiful, so beautiful it almost hurt to look at them They were also wise and clever creatures, seeing more than any other animal ever would and not just with their eyes but with their hearts.
His pride believed these birds lived unseen in their jungle, appearing only when necessary and when the ancestors commanded it. They were rumored to have special insight into the hearts and thoughts of lions.

As a cub Isamu would listen intently as he was told stories of these spacial birds. It was both fascinating and scary to him at the same time. He used to go out into the jungle to try to find the birds, see if they were really as marvelous as the tales told.

On one such occasion he had evaded his mother and gone looking for the birds but he quickly became lost. Scared and cold he wandered through the jungle all afternoon, looking for the way home. What seemed to him like hours and hours passed and finally he just settled at the base of a tree, trying not to cry as he realized he had no hope of finding home on his own.

As he lay there, his face covered by his paws, a soft rustling in the tree got his attention. Half afraid he'd been found by some scary Jungle cat, or something that might harm him, Isamu peeked up through his paws into the leaves.
Sitting there on a low branch a bird with piercing blue eyes and a bright beak was staring at him, seeming almost curious.

In his fear and desperation the cub decided in that instant that this bird was one of the pride's sacred birds, here to save him. He began to talk, telling he bird his whole story.

By the time his pride found him Isamu was engaged in a long, one sided conversation with the bird who seemed curious of the tiny animal.
His mother was just relieved to find him and scooped him up to bring him home. On the way he told her how his sacred bird had saved him and he'd finally found one. She didn't have the heart to tell him that his bird was just an ordinary jungle bird.

As it turned out the bird followed them home, still curious. Once there, with the help of some some edible bribes offered by Isamu, the bird didn't leave.

When he was small the bird would stay outside his den and wait for him to wake up, then would follow him around as he went about his day.
As he grew Isamu came to realize his 'sacred bird' was just an ordinary bird. But the two had become fast friends and before long the bird was staying near him without needing any encouragement. The two have been together ever since that time, and even if the bird isn't sacred or especially wise, Isamu still thinks his bird is very clever for a common jungle bird.

How They Became Friends Friends is one word to describe Kando's relationship with Chukiza. Personally, Kando finds her incredibly annoying. The two met when, as a cub, Kando knocked the nest she was in down from a tree. When he told the story later, upon returning to camp with a young bird nestled in his mane, he insisted that the dumb thing seemed to have decided he was adopting her. Or perhaps she was adopting him? He really wasn't sure. Kando had tried to get rid of her, but Chukiza, who he named as such because she was so annoying, but every time he thought he left her somewhere and had gotten rid of her, she'd reappear, alighting in his mane once again and accompanying him. Most of his pridemates find Chukiza's loyalty endearing, but Kando finds it infuriating. He just wants the bird to leave him alone, though a small part of him would never admit that he did kind of like her company.
