Why 'Shark'?

The afternoon was beautiful, the sun shining in the sky, the birds singing in the trees, the cool breeze traveling across the lake. Djall sat in contemplative silence, eyes half closed, head tilted towards the sun, allowing the breeze to travel through his mane and ruffle it in that oh-so-perfect way.
There was a soft noise from the lake, like a fish jumping for an insect, which caught his attention, and so he lazily lowered his head, opening his eyes to regard the water before him. He had never been much of a swimmer, much preferring to keep his pelt dry, thank you very much, but he could appreciate the beauty of the water.
Some of the pride were excellent swimmers, and brilliant aquatic hunters at that. Sarasa had founded the pride in this territory because of his love for water, and his love for the fat trout that called the lake home in the summer months.
That noise happened again, a soft ‘plop’ that made him stand, craning his neck to see where the fish had sprung from. Ripples danced across the serene surface, but nothing more. Stepping forward, he cringed at the feeling of water playing with his paws, but he persevered - today, he would see, and maybe even catch, a fish!
Trying to keep the displeased snarl from his features, he waded in until he was chest deep. Eyes scanning the surface, he lit up when he spotted some shapes moving beneath the surface, and coming straight towards him, no less!
His features changed to a sadistic grin as he prepared himself for a launch. And, sure enough, the fish swarmed towards him! Pushing himself forward was more difficult in the water, but he caught one! The fish squirmed beneath his paws - slipping out from his grasp with ease and taking off in another direction. Snarling audibly, he swirled to keep it in his sights, but before long, he had spun himself dizzy, and was somehow facing the shore.
Sighing heavily, he turned his head to look back into the water, and his heart dropped as a massive fish - almost as large as him! - came propelling towards him. His paws did nothing to get him out of there fast enough, and he could see the gray shape coming closer... closer... closer!
With barely a splash, the shape surfaced, earning a long, high-pitched squeal from the red lion. He was sure that a closing jaw was next, that pain would come, then he would be dragged back towards the depths of the lake to become some monster’s dinner-
“You okay, bro?”
The voice came, muffled from around a mouthful, and Djall turned to spot Marrazo, one of the newest members of the pride, watching him with amusement gleaming behind his eyes. The lion was slick with water, his pelt sitting upon him like another layer of skin, and, despite the blank glaze in one of his eyes, he still had two of those same trout clutched between his jaws.
Djall huffed, turning his back upon the other lion, who, he knew, was seconds away from pealing laughter.
“Just thought I saw a shark, is all.”

Why 'Shark'?
Requin's nickname 'shark' is extremely important. The pride rarely award nicknames and individuals are only ever given nicknames if Ozmore feels they have done something truly noteworthy for thr pride. The nickname that Requin has was earnt through multiple months of consecutive successful hunts. He has secured prey for the pride even during the harshest of starvations. He has been a successful hunter for his entire time in the pride, having only been part of the pride for 6 months.

Requin was chosen to have a nickname because of his dedication to the pride and their survival, however the reason why 'shark' in particular was chosen is all to do with his hunting strategy. On his own Requin can successfully hunt smaller prey with very little effort using his expert strategy. He stalks his prey silently in a zigzag pattern as he constantly adjusts to stay in the animals blind spot. His aim is to get close enough to pounce without having to run. Running to catch smaller prey is very inefficient however if he can catch them by wasting very little energy they actually turn out to be a good food source during the yearly starvation the territory experiences at the hottest time in summer. It is this unique solo hunting strategy that gave him the nickname 'shark'.

The pride have never seen a shark before and have no accurate idea of what a shark is or what it does. They only know tales of a dangerous and efficient predator from the seas. The prids believe sharks must look like a lion-fish fusion of some sort (probably with lots of sharp teeth) as they simply cannot imagine anything that isn't big cat shapes (or human shaped) to be so successful. One suggestion was that a shark might be a human-fish fusion where the legs are replaced with a tail but the rest of the pride thought that such a creature would be ridiculous as they know humans success is because they stand on two legs which gives them somexsort of magical power. (the lions really don't understand that tools are not part of 5he person. they think that when a human picks something up it becomes part of their body unless they hold it in their mouth).

Requin is also very good at hunting in a group to take down larger prey. He is extremely successful at communicating with the other pride members to corner off prey before it even knows that it is being hunted. As a result the pride have had lots of successful hunts in the past few months with much less effort. This also partly contributed to why he got his nickname.

Why 'Shark'?

More at home in the water than anywhere else, Zralok is not much like other lions.

He cannot tell you how he came to be, where he comes from. He doesn't remember. All he can recall is waking up one day, being exactly how he was, no matter how terribly strange he is.

There are many legends circulating around him.

The first is that he was a cub that was strangely already born with a mouthful of teeth and, when ever he lost one, another quickly regrew in order to take its place within a day or two. And, one day, when he wandered away from his mother and pride toward the lake at the edges of their territory, he was fascinated by the fish there and dove right in after them himself.

Not knowing how to swim, the young lion first panicked, eventually tiring and sinking beneath the surface. But even the story splits there. The first, he drowned there, but when he was pitied by the water dwelling creatures, he was brought back to life in their image. And another that, rather than drowning, that was the day that Zralok learned he could as easily breath under water as he could the air outside of it.

Another legend states that he was born from the water, itself, created as its guardian.

The last legend states that he was stolen away from his pride by humans and was shipped across the ocean but when his crate fell into the sea, he was saved by the water god and was granted the powers he needed to survive in the sea.

With all the stories, Zralok is only filled with uncertainty. He has speculated that he lost his memories in the same fight where he lost his ear and his sight in one eye.

One thing is certain, however; that he is different. Having the true ability to breathe under water, to both create and manipulate water, and that he feels more at home swimming and hunting within bodies of water than he does on land. So, "Shark," a creature, a predator, that lives in the water seems like an accurate calling for him, and that is what others call him in all of the stories about him.
