Euphorian Thoroughbred #105

Postby j. bourne » Tue Sep 10, 2019 10:03 am

Welcome to the Euphorian Retired Racehorse Project
Euphorian Thoroughbreds are a rare string of the Thoroughbred breed. They come from a single farm simply called “Euphoria” that has horses with mutated genes. These allow them to be able to possess any realistic coat or markings. Everything else about the sub-type is the same. Long, strong legs, a powerful hind, and great speed. Their eyes are soft and the breed is incredibly smart, if not a bit goofy. They love kids and have the rare ability to excel in any discipline. They can grow from 15hh-18hh, though usually somewhere in the middle.
The horses readopted through the Euphorian Retired Racehorse Project are looking for a new loving home and a new job. They’ve tried racing and have either retired or decided the sport wasn’t for them. Either way, they are ready for the next chapter in their life. Some of these horses will come with a little training already, and will have their new discipline already determined. Although others you’ll get to pick how they move forwards!

Age: 4
Height: 17.2hh
Discipline:
Halter: Champagne (#F7E7CE) with silver buckles
Story:
She could remember clearly the way she woke up in a cloak of sweat, the smell of smoke invading her nostrils and fogging up the room around her. The shrill cries of the others piercing the air over the crackle of the flames and the shouts of the handlers rushing to rescue as many of them as they could. One by ones she watches as horses raced back and forth in front of her stall, and she tried her best not to panic, and wait for her turn to be rescued.

It felt like forever waiting in that stall, the flames licking closer to her door and the heat making her eyes tear up. No one was coming for her. The sounds of horses had died not too long after, and no other humans had come to her aid. Was this the end? Checkers tried to still the shake in her legs, and cried out, hoping someone would hear her over the roar of the red flames drawing near.
It happened all at once then, her stall door whipping open and a caretaker using her outside. She felt as of she was flying, the barn door seemed so close yet so far, and with a final push she made it outside. Coughing, shaking, and sweaty, she had made it.

She was given fresh water and reunited with her herd mates in the far pasture. The moon had hidden behind the black clouds much before the fire had even begun. Checkers dared look up, watching as the fire tore at the beams of her home, part of the barn caving in suddenly and making her jump at the sound of the crash it made as it hit the earth. She couldn't cry, so she watched as her world fell apart around her, hoping the rain would come.

Show Name: The Bump In the Night
Barn Name: Boogey (Boog or Boo for short)
Gender: Mare
Age: 7
Height: 17.3hh
Discipline: calf roping
Halter: lavender night sky
Story:
Her story of sadness is not long. It is brief. But it was her sadness.
Boogey wanted to start a family some time ago. She had a preference of mares, but wanted her own foal, and found a stallion who didn't mind. They had arranged to have a foal together and started trying. But months had gone by of trying to get pregnant and she couldn't. It didn't take long for the humans to get a vet to come out who ran some blood work and took some tests.
When the humans were called back, there wasn't good news for Boog. The humans didn't mind, as they weren't breeding her for any profit, just to raise their own foal as they did Boog. They came and gave her some treats, as she looked at them partly puzzled, and only what they imagined concern, as much as a horse could possibly look.
And then they mentioned she'd never be able to have her own. They wouldn't get her fixed, if there was some miraculous miracle she would somehow produce a foal. But nonetheless, there was doubt.
This news destroyed Boog, and they could instantly tell she got what they were saying, as she just turned around to walk to her stall, to lay down and process what she had just heard.

      Story:

      word count: 1,309

[the bridge looks something like this, except narrower.]

Freya was lucky to be picked off the racetracks when she was in her prime through an auction, into a farm along with her only family - a pinto coloured mare who birthed her, who raised her to have a kindred and gentle attitude despite being surrounded by a herd of roughhouse younglings in her racing days. She would greet her new owner - a pale, bushy faced old man who had a gentle hand, Ciel, his name was - with curiosity and often times trotted up to him when he brought oats. Needless to say, it was evident that the old man was fond of the well-spirited mare, as was Freya for him.

Freya was kept in a spacious stall beside her dam’s, and her strength and beauty had landed her in the business of carriage-driving where she would go out into the streets to provide transport to commuters from one point to another - other times it would be through long distances and uneven grounds, but regardless of how arduous the journey would be, she would always throw her full weight into the harness, and Ciel would always tend to her injuries and provide her with the best comfort and necessities he could provide - which was not very much, but Freya did not mind regardless.

Through her years, the mare had developed into a stunning and elegant horse, her gentle demure despite the nature of her job had certainly garnered the town’s attention, “A poised and well-mannered lady.”, the farrier would say, and many would offer exorbitant prices in exchange for the mare - which were all turned down by Ciel.

The two would spend their free days in the paddock, sometimes Ciel would run by her side, sometimes watching fondly as she galloped across the grasslands, and other times he would attempt at sketching - to which Freya would snort at and nibble his hair. Sometimes when he was busy tending to other colts in a separate paddock, she would stand at a distance and watch, observing the way he would usher the herd back in the stables - never once did he lay a whip or raised his voice.

Whenever they were in the carriage, Ciel would offer freedom in the reins, never would he flank the whip ruthlessly on her back, not like the other unfortunate carriage horses Freya had seen, he would always make sure it laid still by his hand, and only used it whenever he wanted her to pick up her pace, landing the tip gently with a simple “Go on.” or “Faster.”, never once startling her. Needless to say, the two had formed a deep bond that proved unbreakable.

Though, on one fateful night, the two had taken on their last patron of the day. It was rather late and a thunderous storm had been causing difficulties in Freya’s vision - not to mention, the blinkers were already limiting her vision forward, and the cold was beginning to bite into her limbs, the icy wind blew relentlessly against the carriage’s momentum, forcing the mare to throw her full weight into the harness as they treaded into a dimly lit path of the forest.

Freya tried her best to dig her hooves into the ground to gain more purchase; the mud was causing her to constantly slip and stumble, and Ciel would tug at the reins to help her regain her balance. At this point, her breathing was laboured and exhaustion ached in every inch of her muscle, but Freya knew well enough that she needed to finish her job, and not before long she picks up a terrible sound straight ahead.

At first, she couldn’t tell where the unfamiliar sound was coming from, fear and tension gripped at her guts and all her senses were screaming at her to stop going forward, when she allowed herself a few more paces, she quickly finds the source of the sound - a river, blown wild by the winds as the angry currents laps dangerously at the baseline of the rocking bridge. Despite her better judgements, Freya continues moving forward, and Ciel made no attempts at stopping her. Only then would she realise that she had committed a grave mistake.

The first thing that startled her was the feeling of her hooves giving out under her, Freya slips, a loud whinny escapes her throat as she thrashes wildly, bringing the carriage down along her and toppling over the edge as she frantically attempts to stop herself from slipping under the gap, even as the weight of the carriage burdens her and pulls her along the current. The mare could hear a frantic yell from Ciel in that split second, but it cuts off when he becomes utterly engulfed by the water, and Freya continues to thrash about in hopes that a part of her would catch on a rock and stop her from going under. She whinnies as loud as she could, trying to get an answer from her owner - to no avail, and soon, when she could no longer bear the weight of the heavy anchor, she willingly succumbs, her heavy limbs ceasing to move.

With a final gasp for breath, she goes under.

It wasn’t until the next morning when Freya awakens, her body still and sprawled across unfamiliar grounds, the feeling of the harness and bit was no longer there, replaced by tubes running in to her limbs; her only form of life-support, every inch of her muscle delivered a sharp jab of pain through her entire body and every little sound hurt her ears.

A family had spotted the fallen carriage when it had finally became lodged between two pieces of giant rocks; with Freya in tow, littered in bruises and cuts from the river ground. In haste, the family had managed to retrieve the mare and called for the constabulary. In the following morning, it was reported that not a single sign of Ciel nor their patron were to be found, and when Freya finally learned of the news, she was plagued with constant guilt and anger - the once gentle and good-natured thoroughbred had turned into a distant and easily irritable mare, the deep ache that digs constantly in her chest, accompanied by heartbreak and grief, forces away anyone who attempted to heal her; nothing ever worked.

Freya refused food in the first few months and the four walls of the stall that contained her were the only home she knew of. Any attempts at leading her out into the barn was futile, Freya rejected the other horses. Her once muscled body reduced to nothing but flesh and bones, and the horse was barely recognisable from her dust-covered coat.

But as time passes, she gradually learns to trust again with the help of the family’s oldest sister - a fair maiden with auburn hair and freckled skin. She would wander into the stables late at night, sometimes to read Freya a story, and other times just to appreciate the company and talk about the day’s work. Something about her reminded Freya of Ciel; she had a soft and gentle voice, a kindred expression that Freya couldn’t help but notice attracts the other horses, it was no wonder that the other occupants were so fond of the maiden. The mare slowly finds herself inching closer to listen to her better, and slowly she had trusted her enough to let her come into the stall.

“You know, I saw you, such a beauty in all her shiny glory, I wish I could show you to Camille down at the floral shop.” She would mutter, brushing a hand over her ruffled coat, and she would tiptoe to reach up to Freya’s ear, whispering softly.

“Do it for me, alright? Get well soon, I’ll be here waiting for you.”

Show Name: Lost Stars
Barn Name: Cygnus
Gender: Mare
Age: 8 years
Height: 16.1 hh
Discipline: Jumping
Halter: Emerald Green
Story:
The saddest thing that has ever happened to Cygnus was the loss of her first foal. She was eagerly awaiting the birth of her first foal, excited to finally care for her own baby since some of her pasture mates had already had their foals.
In spring her foal was born, beauty and perfectly healthy. The filly was a black tobiano like her mother and spunky as anything.
For the first two months of her life Cygnus doted on her foal, taking care of her as well as she possibly could.
The filly was the light of her life and everything she did revolved around her small daughter. She thought nothing could possible go wrong now.

Then sickness came to the barn, and the foals were the first to catch it.
Cygnus's foal was among the last to fall ill, and her mother refused to go far from her, though the humans tried to keep them apart sometimes. All she wanted was to help her foal, convinced she could somehow save her.
Cygnus's friends tried to warn her, especially those who'd already lost their own foals to the illness. But the mare refused to listen to them, determined that if she didn't believe it would happen, it just wouldn't.
But in the end, despite her best efforts, her foal died like the rest.
Cygnus was heartbroken, and not the same for a long time after that, not wanting to do any of the things she usually enjoyed and deteriorating physically from not eating well enough. Nothing seemed to be able to get through to her.
It was only having her friends grieving their own losses with her that really brought her back in the end.
But she hasn't ever been entirely the same since, even if she has moved past her grief better now.
To this day she still misses her daughter and the time they never had.

Story:
Something people crave in their equine partners is what has been called a 'heart horse', but for Theia, not only had she found a home she had always dreamed of, she was lucky enough to find the B1 to her B2, the Bert to her Ernie and so on. Theia, at the age of five and straight off the track had found her very own 'heart human' and for five years life was seeming like she was already in heaven. Every morning when she poked her head out from her spacious stall, there she was, her beautiful human in all her 5'2 glory. For as long as she had been able to dream, the mare had seen herself in a place such as this. She was spoilt rotten but never dreamed of taking on some of the habits of the other horses in the barn and by the time she had been started back undersaddle, she had so much love and trust for her precious person that all she desired to do was please. Whatever her dear Emily would ask, Theia would provide
