Intake Report: No Visible Injuries
"We were surprised to note that this queen didn't appear to have any serious injuries despite to their wild behavior - we figured they would of been torn to bits from all their ramming and charging at fences. It wasn't until they had been under our care for a little while longer that we realized they did indeed have some serious problems, but they were simply of the mental variety. To start off the issue, the queen was fervently terrified of people - quick pacing feet, darting hand movements, loud voices, anything that was over stimulating and coming from a human got them riled in a bad way. In the beginning we figured we had this handled. They calmed down rather quickly, were highly food driven, and gaining their trust was practically too easy. Apparently it was in fact too easy; three days in, the queen went wild again. Workers who they had previously adored were suddenly viewed as strangers almost overnight, leaving them running for their lives as the Skepluvi charged at them headfirst. The queen rammed their nose into the gate in a blind panic during any bout of anxiety at all, leaving them with painful swelling and bruising along their head and muzzle. Again, we worked patiently, and got them to relax for much needed care for their scuffed up head. But like clockwork this happened again and again, the timespan differing, but the interaction never changing - injury after injury, heartbroken volunteer after heartbroken volunteer. After two weeks of this non-stop, our veterinary staff began running some tests alongside our behavioral specialists, and they came to a sad conclusion that no one had wanted to accept. It appeared the Skepluvi had suffered a nasty head injury when they were a young ritten, leaving small fractures along the back of their skull that had healed over, but then had been fractures again and again as they aged, likely in a case of abuse at first and then stemming from their habit of blind head bashing. This trauma ultimately left the queen with a memory loss disorder, one that not only causes them to forget some short term things (such as where they had just set their toy down moments ago or whether or not they had just eaten the last aloe leaf earlier that hour), but also to completely 'reset' their memory spanning through several days (including the faces of people they loved, Skepluvias they had bonded to, even what their own barn stall looked liked) every forty-eight to seventy-two hours. How exactly their new handler will be able to connect to them with such an overwhelming condition is unclear, but it will need to happen soon if we wish to keep the Skepluvi safe from their own behaviors. We think perhaps some specialized training with teaching hand symbols, facial recognition, or using picture books, similar to techniques used for humans that suffer from dementia or alzheimers, may help the Skepluvi to retain some parts of their long term memory over time - but it will be a long road and require a lot of patience. In the best case scenario, the queen's memory may come back entirely; worst case scenario, their short term memory may begin to fade even faster. Keeping their mind active and working closely with their needs will be a must if they have any hope of getting through this. If they can't, they will continue to suffer and live in constant fear of humans, leaving them vulnerable to their self-injurious behavior. So it's all up to you now - can you help them?"

“A head injury as a Ritten? And it’s done all this damage to her memory because of repetitive trauma throughout her life? To say this is horrifying would be an understatement” Isabela muttered as she read through the paperwork. Those in charge of the rescue operation had kindly allowed her to take on another Queen, though this would be the womans’ toughest rescue ever. She’d never dealt with anything like the Queen who was quietly investigating her new surroundings. To be perfectly honest Isabela hadn’t the slightest idea of what she was going to do in regards to the new queen. She’d need to put an incredible amount of thought into the work she was going to have to do.
An idea sparked into life causing Isabela to spin immediately on the spot, dashing across the yard and almost crashing into the front door of her home in her hurry. Flinging it open the dark haired woman hurried inside moving into the storage room and rifling around for a few moments.
“Aha! There you are, finally found a good use for this stuff” she exclaimed pocketing the small jar and a slender brush as well. The woman quickly made her way back toward the arena, taking the jar and brush from her pocket and unscrewing the lid of the jar. Dipping the brush into the jar’s interior had it quickly becoming covered in bright pink sparkling face paint. Withdrawing the brush Isablea gently drew two rough looking lines down each both of her cheeks. This would be one way for her to work on trying to help work on the queens memories, perhaps a simple sign could work alongside the paint.
As she approached, Isabela whistled sharply catching the queen’s attention. Quickly drawing a vertical line in the air with one finger, the woman decided that it and the paint if she did them everyday could possibly help Vidalia! There was fear but also curiosity in Vidalia’s body language as Isabela approached as slowly as possible. She knew that it could be possible upon coming back the next morning that all this could have been forgotten. But Isabela couldn’t not take the chance that perhaps repeating her actions in the same way for some time? Might just do the trick, at least she hoped it would anyway.
The next morning she repeated her actions from the door before, painting the lines down her cheeks and drawing a line in the air. Vidalia had not forgotten her yet and seemed less nervous about the woman’s approach than the day before. Even proving willing to allow Isabela to stand at the fence and watch her actions. Still, tomorrow would most likely be the day the memories vanished and all that fear came back. All she could so was keep doing what she had for the past two days.
Isabela confirmed her own suspicions the next day when upon the greeting the snake/antelope patterned queen with her face painted and the hand signal. She found no recognition in those brown eyes and the queen fled from her, it had been expected but still the dark haired woman found herself feeling sorrowful. With a heavy heart, she slipped the rubber bucket containing breakfast though the gaps between the wooden planks that made up the fence. The idea that there might be some miracle after the first few days was childlike innocence that had no place in the work she was doing.
A sigh escaped her lips and she left the Queen alone in the arena once more, going to tend to her charges that needed less care then the newest rescue. Dropping by later found little change in the Queen’s behavior though the paint still stood out on her skin and the hand signal was made. The woman simply had to remind herself not to keep expecting some sort of magical miracle, it was far too early on to expect such a thing.
Some weeks later after many disappointments despite repeated actions each and every day no matter the weather. Isabela found the Queen standing at the fence on the third day of that week. The long tail waving slightly in delight upon seeing the dark haired woman’s painted cheeks and familiar hand signal. There was still uncertainty but alongside it there was recognition and the faintest glimmer of something that she couldn’t quite decipher in those deep eyes. She was gentle as she extended a hand to the Queen, who snuffled in a highly curious manner. Catching the scent of various equines and of course the other two Queens who also called the place home.
Perhaps now with such significant process being made? Trixx could finally start to properly heal.
Unless I post somewhere, I'm not selling/trading closed species critters.
