Memorable Moment: Anyone could see that Fallen Oaks Farm was in complete disarray. Everyone had noticed how badly the barn looked; it was basically ready to crumble. What many people overlooked was the abysmal condition of the paddock areas. It was easy to miss, as makeshift pens had been set up instead to hold the rescued horses. The fences had decent sized holes within them that would easily allow foals to slip out of their pastures, but the mares were unable to follow their babies. This is how Autumn got herself into danger.
It was normal at this point for the foals to slip out and play with each other if they were lucky enough to have the opportunity to go outside. One little colt would often round up the other foals, asking them to play. They would all slip out through the holes in the fences that the barn workers were too lazy to repair, and go have some fun. It had all become routine, and even the mares had become less worried about the playful antics of their babies.
However, one night, something was different, and the foals and mares were none the wiser. One of the resident stallions had been acting out more excessively than normal that day. The cruel worker handling him simply let him go in order to save himself from injury. The stallion didnβt go far, but he went to the tree line at the edge of the property where thereβs a huge meadow. There, he spent a few hours alone, grazing peacefully, unbothered by the abusive humans.
As the sun sank down over the horizon, the foals could hear the sounds of car tires screeching away from the property. They all waited until they were sure it was safe to wander out, and then they all gathered to play. The youngers all romped around, chasing each other, until eventually arriving at the tree line of the property. They loved to play here since there was so much open space, and the forest beyond the tree line was fun to explore. They were unaware of the unusual guest that had been in that area all day, who would not be happy with so many foals intruding on his new territory.
A mighty screech echoed through the night. Each foal froze, eyes wide, wondering what it could be. The stallion came charging through the middle of the group of foals, ears flat against his skull, jaws snapping. All the little ones tried to run, but Autumn was the unfortunate foal to be caught in the fray. The stallion had so much rage and fear built up from the abuse he had received from the humans that he was now taking it out on a poor, defenseless baby. He repeatedly bit into her flank, kicked out at her, and once even picked her up, tossing her through the air. Autumn laid there terrified, the wind knocked out of her. Her chest was heaving .
Suddenly, another high pitched squeal boomed across the property. Autumn looked over, and saw her mother. The other foals alerted the mares about the incident, and she had jumped the fence to go protect her filly. The large mare barreled towards the stallion, knocking into him, throwing him off balance and into the dirt. She stood over Autumn and snorted, aggressively pawing and snapping at the stallion. The stallion snorted, and then took off away from the brave mare.
The mare licked Autumn to make sure she was ok, and then guided her back to their pasture. The filly was alright, somehow, but only physically. Mentally, she was far from it. She was utterly panicked, and could not calm down. She was easily spooked for weeks after, and was extremely hesitant to leave her motherβs side after the ordeal. She still struggles sometimes with being around other horses, especially males, but once she warms up to them, she is often ok.
