Reaction to Being Rescued: I was led to a smaller group of foals, watching as most of them frantically tore at the grass with whatever energy they had left. It was a feeding frenzy, the small creatures jumping slightly as I walked past. I stood a few feet away from a young foal laying in the grass, not too keen on feasting like the others. He was frail and didn't seem to be breathing if you were too far away.
Looking up from the foal, my brother comes into vision, stepping around caution tape and pushing past chatty rescuers. He moves to stand beside me, his eyes drifting to the small foal. He looked back up at me after a while, a look that I knew all too well, and I motioned him to where a rescuer was standing. His eyes lit up, and he headed straight for the smaller woman. I watched their exchange until he looked back at me and grinned, and I couldn't help but smile.
I slowly moved so I was in the small foal's line of vision. Slowly crouching down and moving toward him at a steady pace. He seemed to not even notice me, and it quite worried me. Was he...? Once I was a few steps away from him, his eyes opened, head quickly snapping in my direction, ears attentive and eyes wide with curiosity. He was surely more gentle than the other foals surrounding him, and he watched as I moved to slowly sit beside him.
Reaching out slowly, I present the back of my hand to him, and hesitantly he sniffs it, lethargically retracting after he was finished. I move to sit cross-legged next to him, daring to run my fingers through his ratty mane and down his neck. I repeated the process over and over, both of us watching the frenzy of people and horses around us. It was if he had found peace in this chaos, and with no warning, his head gently fell into my lap, his eyes slowly closing and his breath falling into a steady rhythm. My heart soared, and I released a breath I never knew I was holding; and as he slept, I let myself catch my breath over the sound of sirens and flashing lights.
