Link was on his way to the river one day to take a swim. His plan was to catch a fish for a friend while
he was out. He strolled to the edge of the river, sitting with his paws touching the edge of the fridged water.
Winter was on it's way and prey was already beginning to be scarce, he figured the fish would be a good
gift before the hardship entirely set in. A shape flickered in the corner of his vision, his eyes quickly
moving to it. A fish had appeared, oblivious to his existence. He leapt in after it, his paws plunging in,
his head dunking under. But the river was faster than he expected and he was swept away. He managed
to get his head above the torrent of water, gasping as he was swept down stream. He was an experienced
swimmer, but not strong enough to withstand this water's strength. He cried out for help and went
back under, but he felt a pressure around his neck. Something was grabbing him. It lost it's grip momentarily,
but regained it again. When it slipped away from his fur a second time, he felt something under him,
lifting him from the water. He felt air enter his lungs again, and opened his eyes to a great fear. A human
had him in a strange blanket with holes in it. He wanted to struggle away, but he could not, he was too
tired. The person was in a strange wood contraption that bobbed in the current. It said something to him
that Link did not understand. But the words were kind. He was set down next to the human, and dried
with something that he did not have a word for. The human made it to shore and set him down on the sand,
his warmth and energy regained. He sat there for a moment, wondering how he could thank the man for his
kindness. But the human pat him on the head and took something from a box, lowering to Link's head. Link
let out a purr, turns out he wouldn't be returning without a fish.

When he was a young kitten, weaned but still very attached to his mother, he saw her snatched up by a wolf at the entrance to their den. It happened in the blink of an eye, so fast he almost wasn't sure what he'd seen was real, but when little Whirlwind cried out to her, he received no answer. Instead, a second wolf began to dig and snap its jaws outside, eager to sink its teeth into one of the other cats. Whirlwind's father lunged at the canine, sinking his claws into its muzzle to chase it away. The wolf tried again, only to receive the same angry response, the cat growling and hissing to make his point.

There was no third attempt, but that didn't make a difference to Whirlwind. His mother - his closest friend and confidant - was gone. He cried late into the night until exhaustion had him drifting off into an uneasy sleep.

He eventually found some comfort with the other kittens and their mothers, but nothing was ever the same. Whirlwind felt like he'd lost a part of himself that day.

Since then, he's grown into a brave, compassionate adult who will gladly dive into the fray if it means sparing others from suffering.
