"Lightningfur...?" Silverpaw stared at the surreal scene in front of her. She prodded the still cat sprawled in front of her, her gut twisting. "Lightningfur, wake up!" Silverpaw shook the cat, sniffing. The reality of what had happened set in and Silverpaw couldn't help but start sobbing. Trying to fix the dog problem herself - how idiotic of her to do such a thing. Her mentor, Lightningfur, had tried to save her - now he was still on the ground. Silverpaw wailed, inching closer to Lightningfur. "I'm so sorry..." She murmured.

Silverpaw drew her eyes to the dusty ground, barely listening to Cinderstar as the warrior ceremony continued. The ceremony went on, her name being called. 'Silverfall.' The name made her shiver - Silverfall. It didn't matter. Surely it didn't have bad intentions, plus, the name was kind of cool.

The battle was tense, the air hot and stuffy. Silverfall clawed a brown tabby across the air, barely dodging a paw swiping at her throat. Silverfall was reminded of her old mentor, who had saved her. Lightningfur only fueled Silverfall's anger. She continued to swipe at the tabby, managing to claw it in the shoulder. The tabby yowled, leaping onto Silverfall. Silverfall turned, shaking the tabby off and swiping at him until he ran away. Sighing in relief and happiness, Silverfall turned and looked for her next opponent, realizing no other enemies were still fighting. A cat ran up to Silverfall.
"We did good, huh?" The cat smiled.
"We did, Mousetail." Silverfall returned the smile.

Sitting in the middle of the camp, Silverfall nibbled a small mouse laying at her paws. Her mind brought her to past battles and, well, Lightningfur. She didn't know why she couldn't move on - It had been so many moons she basically should have forgotten - Not like forgetting would be a good thing. Recalling the memories, she thought about it. Maybe Lightningfur had been some idol in Silverfall's life she couldn't forget. She knew he was in Starclan, but was he really? Silverfall sighed, her mind must really hate her with all those questions. All she knew was Lightningfur had been an amazing cat and Silverfall wouldn't let him down. He did save her, after all.

She looked at him across the way and it changed everything. It was a spark that flew between them, electricity in the air as their eyes met and just for a moment the world made a little more sense. Shadowing Pine, he knew her name just as well as he knew her mate, Burning Coal. He knew that sneaking off to meet with her when she left camp was a terrible thing but he did it none the less.

He remembered the way her eyes glowed when he came to speak with her, the way she laughed when he told her about his job, not in mocking but in quiet admiration, the way she became filled with vigour when she spoke about her favourite things. He'd fallen in love with her and with all his heart believed she was his soulmate.

Was this the defining moment in his past? No, that moment came moons later when three kits were brought into the world by the cat he loved.

He knew, as any father would, that the kits were his but more than that he knew something greater. For all the things he wanted in life, he had never wanted to make Shadowing Pine a liar and a cheat. It was like the past months had collapsed back on themselves and sense came flooding back.

They'd been wrong, they had been so very wrong but now they had gone too far to go back. At least that was what he thought at first. After some careful thinking Mending Gorse swallowed his pride and broke all connections with the mother of his kits, opening the way for Burning Coal to believe that his mate had been loyal.

It burnt him inside, to watch his kits grow up without him and internally he began to think toxic thoughts, criticising the way Burning Coal raised his kits, selfishly trying to be there to support the kits even though he made himself promise never to speak with them.

It made him bitter to have done the right thing in an effort to salvage himself from his past sins. It made him bitter and old to have watched his kits grow up without him. It made him bitter, old and cruel to have turned that rage against those around him in an effort to stay sane.

He shouldn't have fallen in love with someone who wasn't his. [401/500]
