Why is he so sad?: He is sad because he wasn't able to be with his girlfriend on the night of their anerversery. They live in different places and don't get to see each other much. On the night of their anerversery he set up a large dance and a beautiful dinner, bought her lots of preasents. Then right before he was supposed to see her he got a message saying she couldn't make it cuz of work.
What would make him really happy?:

it would make him happy if he had enough receroces to go see his girlfriend and spend the rest of their lives together.
